I think it's a HUGE bummer the PSVR2 isn't backwards compatible with original PSVR games. What do you think?
@parker1631

I agree, but with the changes in the technology that were made to get such better results, I don't think there would be a way to make this headset emulate the old psvr in a way that would allow global back compat. The light ball tracking and headset mounted tracking cameras are like two different languages. However, it looks like the devs of some of the most successful psvr games are working on psvr 2 patches, which is the best we can hope for.

Well, not exactly. PSVR 1 and 2 are not standalone devices. In their case, the console always does the computing. Ergo, the backwards compatibility solution is much simpler, since PS HMDs are image displays. The PS5 can play almost all PS4 games, we're talking over 4000 titles... excluding VR games of course. In contrast, Quest 1 and 2 are standalone hardware with their own display and computing capabilities. With different hardware.
@munton5150

@@TinmanHU totally agree. Just felt a bit screwed by Meta. They’ve had a track record of dropping support for devices pretty quickly and leaving people behind that way. Nightmare of sign in issues on top of it, based on the name change, change in required Facebook account etc. Major pain.

@@munton5150 I understand your point of view. My opinion - as a long time VR gamer - is that the standalone, zero cable solution is a huge advantage, not to mention the 3D video playback capability. Plus you can buy an MQ2 for $400 which is significantly cheaper than a PS5 and PSVR2 system. Not to mention PCVR, SteamVR without a cable (AirLink). Also when you want to to upgrade to a more serious device like the MQ3, you can sell the MQ2 and because it's standalone hardware, it's easy to sell. Facebook account hasn't been needed at all for Meta HMDs for a while now, a plain mail + password combo is enough. Make no mistake: The PSVR2 is a good HMD, but I feel the MQ2 offers a lot more at a lower price.
@SilentMott

That doesn't make sense, you can't expect the oculus 1 to be forward compatible, such a think doesn't exist, of course you need a newer oculus. Expecting a NEWER device to be backward compatible DOES make sense.

@@SilentMott you miss the point. Quest 2 came out not much more than a year after the quest 1, so it would have been totally fine to support RE4 at 72 fps on the Quest 1. People even hacked it and it worked. The new price drop of the Pro from $1499 to $999 further proves they don’t much care about you, or about your investment. They just want your data. Just not right away since it already took me months to save for the PSVR2, and the setup I currently have priced out between a collapsible racing seat and wheel (with shifter) might cost almost as much as the headset. It’s such an improvement over the original PSVR (which I annoyingly still have hooked up to my PS5 as well) and broke down and bought a Quest 2 yesterday for some reason reason (income tax I guess, but mostly Resident Evil 4 VR 😂). I like all the exercise/fitness apps on the PlayStation headsets but my kids are always on them when I wanna use it so I gave into temptation and ordered a Quest 2. I plan on doing the majority of my VR gaming on the PS5 and using the Quest 2 as a fitness machine (Synth Ryders, Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, and other games that get you moving a lot) plus an RE 4 VR machine (it’s been SUPER fun but man it seems to crash a lot… maybe I need to delete it and redownload it?). Resident Evil is probably my favorite franchise (or at least in the top three) and being able to play RE 4, RE 7, and RE 8 all in VR is quite amazing. Just sucks that they are all locked to separate headsets (Quest 2 for RE 4, PSVR 1 for RE 7, and PSVR 2 for RE 8)… Anyway great video (like always lol). I really love VR and how immersive it is. I hear that the app that allows for the video playback is coming back when they finally update it. Overall I'm pretty happy with the headset. It's comfortable and the games are a lot of fun. I have both the PSVR2 and the Quest 2, and in my opinion, PSVR2 is easily the better VR headset. It's all about the games, and the gaming experience is just plain better on the PSVR2. It's a machine with real power versus a mobile processor. They're really not in the same class. Also, adding the price of the PSVR2 and the PS5 together isn't really fair. The PS5 has value on its own. Just like the PC has value on its own and isn't generally added to the cost of a PCVR headset. People aren't saying the Valve Index costs $3500. And yet when comparing Quest 2 to PSVR2, it seems common to consider hooking up the Quest 2 to a PC whenever talking about its gaming power, but then talking about the cost of the Quest 2 itself only when comparing prices while including the PS5 in the cost of the PSVR2. You can't have it both ways at the same time! Speaking of PSVR2 vs Quest 2+PC Link... the PSVR2 doesn't suffer latency like the Quest 2 does. So while I agree that there are nice things about the Quest 2 over the PSVR2, the PSVR2 is significantly better in the parts where it really counts.

I think age is a BIG factor as to whether you’ll like VR or not. My friends and I play Mini Golf quite regularly along with Demeo. It’s weird…when we finish playing I feel like we’ve actually “gotten together”. Hard to describe. I love the community feel of the Oculus. Yes, kids can be annoying but for the most part, sitting in a theater watching a movie, or sitting with others painting fantasy minis (Demeo) while chatting it up…it’s just so different from when I played online games like Yserbius, EverQuest and WoW. My main issue with the quest isn't the headset but rather how Meta is handling it. For example there are multiple fleshed out social VR games. Instead of making it easier for them to thrive meta made a cheap knockoff and acts like they are creating something new. It's already claimed the lives of both Altspace and echo VR. Then they decided to make a space for real businesses to sell in VR. But they made the fees so high its basically killing I off before it catches on. It's also made it easier for toxic fantasy to finally invade VR. Originally everyone was equal regardless of headset. Now it's another console war. Just this time people argue while playing the same game together.

Another flaw of not supporting PS VR1 backwards comparability is that if you move to the VR2, the technical improvements will make it jarring and potentially difficult to go back and play the VR1. Not considering having to set the equipment up either, why would anyone go back to inferior VR technology? I feel like no matter how much you loved a VR1, if youve become used to the VR2 it could be unbearable to go back and play the original

I hope PSVR2 does well! More than anything I just want *VR* to thrive, evolve, and grow as a technology. :) If I had a PS5, the lack of backwards compatibility would almost immediately deter me though. I know Sony and a lot of people claim that it's not possible, but PC VR has been accommodating for different headsets, controllers, etc this entire time...and I just don't think it's a truly valid excuse. The PSVR2 cost? I think it's very reasonable for the tech you are getting. It's by far the nicest "mainstream" VR headset as far as what's in it. It's expensive, yes...but you're getting a lot for the money & may push VR [as a whole] forward. It's almost not fair to compare the Quest 2 internal GPU to the PSVR2 (being ran by the PS5). The PS5 obviously has vastly more resources. It's interesting to see that MetalJesus feels like it's not a huge overall issue --I would have thought it'd be more-so. It comes at the price of being physically tethered though. I mainly use my Quest 2 (wirelessly) with my PC for VR, so it really is the best of both worlds. Doesn't have the OLED of the PSVR2 or the adaptive triggers, etc...but both setups have their tradeoffs (being wired for PSVR2 would likely drive me crazy).

Every PSVR1 one game requires several things to function correctly; tracking of the players head, and tracking of the controllers. Problem with Quest is it’s on a mobile chipset. Quest has really been holding VR back in terms of big experiences, not that it doesn’t have some neat stuff, but it’s just not capable of blockbuster games, without being tethered to a PC. PSVR2 will hopefully bring the AAA VR experiences back.
@joejoesoft
Жыл бұрын
The problem is the video chipset. The Red Matter 2 devs (arguably the best looking game on the Q2) said the CPU performs surprisingly well. The GPU, however, has weak ventilation and is locked to a lower clock speed because of it. It's the weakest point for performance. The devs where able to double the resolution for the Pico4 port because of this and the increased FoV. Money is holding back AAA VR experiences. VR is a niche market with 20% the audience of a console like the PS4. Compare best selling big budget game Half-Life: Alyx to PS4s God of War. Alyx had sold over 2 million copies. GoW has sold almost 20 million. Drop the budget and you get well over 4 million copies for Beat Saber - across all VR platforms.
@wlot28
Жыл бұрын
Like the other guy said, the main problem is big developers not having enough monetary incentive to create great games for the Quest 2 that are optimized for the hardware and can run/look far better than anything indie devs can put out. Especially with the upcoming Q3 which reportedly has a x2 processing improvement in its SOC, by that point all we really need is good developers that can optimize games for the mobile chipset that don't look awful. There are already some pretty good examples of great graphics on the Q2 from games by talented developers like Red Matter 2. However right now there's too much risk, development cost and lack of sizable playerbase to make it worth it outside of being paid to develop a project by a publisher.
@Erik20766
Жыл бұрын
@@joejoesoft the GPU is almost always the bottleneck in gaming, so no surprise there. Thing is, if you want comparable performance to a beefy gaming PC or PS5 you need a lot of compute that 1: weighs a lot more (including cooling) than would be comfortable in a VR headset, and 2: uses so much power that the battery for it would make it even heavier, or make the battery life extremely short

PSVR, PSVR2, and even the old Nintendo Virtual Boy are all better than any version of the Meta headsets by default; simply due to not being a part of Meta/Facebook. Ok…the expensive part? Not really, go compare the tech (not the meta quest) to equal pc vr tech including the pc to run vr then see where you are at with pricing. For what you get for the money with the PSVR2, it’s actually not bad at all, including the price of a PS5 ( if you don’t already own one) On top of that, you have the future of Sony titles, and if your just getting into VR, you have all the titles you might have missed.. see what people don’t understand about the library is that they are looking for a player base that is also new to VR and not have the previous titles. Not everybody will have owned a PS VR 1 or have owned a meta quest two. Also, I find it interesting you did not address the ”widespread issue” of the faulty controller’s going around that are not syncing with the games. It is way more than just a few. Although it is only a software issue, it still needs to be addressed by Sony and is affecting many people. (Except for some odd reason, not major, influencers and Contant creators, hmmmm) The cable is not really a issue, and actually would rather have the cable. What people don’t understand is that this does not have a mobile processor, and this is actually running off the tech of the PlayStation five. I would rather have that power with the cable, then a standalone, less powered VR headset…

Great review! I don't have either system yet, but I'd say the slight disappointment in PSVR2 is justified. However, I think the part you don't give enough credit to is the fact that I think the playstation game development eco system is the PSVR2's biggest selling point. Gran Turismo is probably the prime example of that. I know when I owned first Oculus (my first and only VR headset) I was disappointed in all the games I couldn't play that were only available on the PSVR. I imagine that will be the same for PSVR2, especially as more developers make games exclusive to the graphical ability of the PSVR2. I don't like making promises part of a review, but in this case Playstation has a proven track record and a very large lead in graphical ability, so I think it's safe to assume that you're going to see a lot more games exclusive to the platform in the future. Well, and I suppose this is key, if the player base is there.
