This was well communicated as well explained. I think I understood Broadcast messages much better than Multicast but it’s ok. What is clearly helpful here is interjecting your own personality when you go “Hey I’m MAC address so and so I need an IP Address or add me to your Switch table”. That really helps to understand the picture in how things are happening between switches and devices in example. Question though: if one was to install a Stratix Managed Switch as only switch in network with half a dozen plus nodes, is there any consequence in having not configured and installing It from out of the box? I heard it said somewhere that a Managed switch installed. It not configured is worst than an unmanaged switch. What is the truth to that and why? Is IGMP Snooping default set on the Stratix switches or does that have to be set configured?

Hi Ardent, glad you're enjoying the videos. I believe that out of the box the Stratix will function as if it were unmanaged. For IGMP, there should option to enable it via Device Manager in the Configure menu under Security.

PLCGurus.NET Thanks for the feedback from question. As in a recent huge PLC upgrade at a power plant that my Senoir Engineer coworker and I did upgrading from PLC 5/SLC to ControlLogix with 12 nodes of Chassis I/O’ which was a huge upgrade, we installed 1 Stratix 8000 Managed Switch. Anyway, it wasn’t configured beyond the IP Address being set in the switch. The PLC network isn’t connected to anything else except the running process equipment. I remember asking my coworker if we needed to configure the switch somehow. He said it was fine, it wouldn’t be a problem but he knows far more than me by far and in programing. But I’ve always thought about that now 7 months later if it was the right thing to do. Thus, it’s a reason I watch all these videos with a keen interest. Anyway, you should add another video to do to your list and include the use or demonstration of Rockwell Automation new software application for “FactoryTalk Network Manager” for configuring, troubleshooting, diagnostics of switch network issues. Keep doing what your doing man.
