I worked in a casino as a slot machine tech for a year. While I don't think we had the Silent Hill machine specifically, we did have a ton of Konami machines, and they were the biggest peices of shit we had on the floor. They had all the worst features you could hope for, they were flimsy af but still somehow super heavy, the soldering looked like it was done by a chimp on meth, the layout of the internal components made no goddamn sense, and errors were so frequent you could set a watch to it. Oh, another button panel tilt? Must be time for lunch.

As much as I didn't enjoy playing 4, you're right that it was also part of that special selection of games that were truly art, with a vision behind them. The Silent Hill franchise had the perfect atmosphere and soundscape to make those horrifying but almost dreamy experiences really immerse you. I've never played anything like the SH trilogy and, honestly even as a huge RE fan, I can definitely say SH was the best survival horror ever made. Such a shame it's died in this way, there's not even untouched rereleases of the games. The only way is to hunt down originals or emulate. So sad.

@NazoKira
2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I'm surprised Muta hasn't known this. It wasn't a mystery, it's been revealed since Kojima has left Konami after the development of MGV and Fox Engine, Konami treated Kojima poorly. Also P.T. there's a lot of hidden meaning for it, Kojima really put out something that reflects his time with Konami.
@zgavar
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, which was allegedly provoked due to the fact that they didn't care so much about traditional gaming anymore and would rather opt into the whole gambling side. So in their eyes, Kojima would ask for too much money and would bring in less than the pachinko side. He was basically the head of the gaming on platforms/PC and he wanted to continue his work there. This could be seen by the fact that they made an entire new engine for MGSGZ and MGSPP. Which, also mentioned in the video, was used for PT as well. So the TL;DR version is: Konami = Company; Company want money; Gambling money > Gaming money; Gaming = Kojima Bye Kojima

What Muta has said in this video is something that has echoed in fans' minds for a long time now. The only way to continue the series is to preserve it. That is something that fans can easily do through remastering it and showcasing their love for it. The beautiful thing about indie gaming now is how popular it has become in the last few years. Also considering some of Team Silent still working in the industry, especially Slitterhead from the original director of Silent Hill. The series may be dead but the inspiration and legacy need to live on. Now has never been a better time for a new team of developers to create something inspired by it.

Konami learned the wrong lessons from SH2… they basically simplified the concept of Silent Hill to a main character with a major flaw and a main enemy creature themed around that major flaw. as though that was the reason Pyramid Head and James became so popular. just goes to show that Konami has always been completely out of touch with the fan base of their games.

PT wasn’t the saving grace , Matter of fact this has zero similarities with Silent Hill , I’m glad it’s dead , Kojima is not a good horror director , The reason Team Silent got it right because they understood psychological horror , human fears and had extreme untapped talent when it comes to horror imaginations aka creatures designs while PT they had to get Junji Ito to do the creatures that are shown into the commercials of PT before cancellation , Kojima however is not good with Silent Hill , He’s good at stealth and JRPGs games , I’d rather play Origins , It feels and plays more of a Silent Hill than PT .

May be true that the environment felt similar, but it's truly impossible to capture the compositional elements of horror that they strived to achieve with silent hill due to their forced camera mechanism. This allowed them to tailor the game from start to finish around exactly where they wanted the camera to be placed and how the environment interacted with camera. This dynamic camera work most likely took the entirety of the game making process with thousands of hours put in by talented artists trained exactly for this kind of thing (this is why konami cant do shit for silent hill now, it was kojima's baby.) From software's strongest points come from their in game combat mechanics and their fantastic modeling/rigging/animations. A completely different set of skills for a company to acquire. What I'm trying to say is silent hill plays more like a movie than it does a game, and that comes from a lot of perfectly framed shots for the player to experience. This is why it's so hard to capture that art form. It's far too dynamic.

Great “genius” horror games will never come from just reliving the past over and over. I’m with you- let it die. This is something that needs to happen more often in gaming. For instance, let’s look outside of horror at a recent game: I doubt Elden Ring would have sold as well as it has and be regarded so well by people who’ve never played a From game if it was just Dark Souls 4. What matters is that talented people make interesting games, not whether or not it has Silent Hill or whatever on the box. This honestly goes for all media. I will never understand why people put so much stock into any franchise to the point where they complain when the owners no longer care. Sure, it’s sad to see the things you loved die, but that’s just life. Move on. If the people who own these properties don’t care, why should you? For nostalgia’s sake??? There are people still making great games out there, so Konami is no longer one of them… oh well I guess. How many other companies has this happened to also? The void left by Konami will eventually be filled as long as people start buying games that are GOOD and not just cuz they we made by Popular Company with a picture of Popular Brand on the box.

Konami forces you to pay a subscription fee to play beatmania IIDX at home. Did you know konami has their own currency as well? It's called Paseli and it can be used to buy real stuff in japan as well as exclusive shit for their arcade rhythm games.

I got the first Silent Hill one month after it's release (thanks grandma that paid it without knowing what's in it) and i never, ever, felt that terror in any game after that, at some point in the game it was physically impossible to me to continue playing, i was just petrified controller in hands waiting to be fucked by whatever made that sound in the fog... 10/10 would do it again !

I feel like Konami, as a company that exited the gaming market to exploit actual gamblers, maintains more good will with gamers than current game developers peddling loot boxes and gacha rolls. Sorry, _surprise mechanics._

Silent Hill and Metal Gear were two of my favorite series growing up. Only Silent Hill I didn't play from the PS2 era was Origins. Think I still have Shattered Memories in a box 'round here somewhere ...and a Ps2 in another box somewheres else. Sad to see how far the series has fallen but they were damn fun while they lasted!

Silent Hill 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. The big reveal at the end shocked the shit out of me, and the first ending I got was "In Water" or something like that, because I took my time going through. If they can't bring us games at that level, they need to leave the IP alone until they can.

You can still download P.T. with a proxy server, IF you have the demo linked to an account. And it still feels like something the world has never seen before.

I can’t let a game I love too much die. Silent Hills, sure. But the game series as a whole, I can’t.

If i would get a penny for every time i heard a new MGS/SH game is in development, i'd have enough money to buy Konami. Let's hope they won't fuck up the franchise(s) any further.

@@3xterminator05 Bloober team publicly partnered with Konami. Doesn’t take a genius to see where this is going. Especially since bloober silent hill was rumoured even before that was official.

@@TheDarkblue57 I’m well aware of that but once again. We have no official confirmation, plus I’d take any other company other than bloober team to make Silent Hill

I'd love Silent Hill to get remakes with Controls and Camera Angles that weren't horrible to use. Nobody played Silent Hill because it is a Good Game Gameplay Wise...it's because the Atmosphere and Story were so great.

The stiff tanklike movement is part of the experience tho, if the movement was more fluid then combat would be easier and if combat is easier then the enemy encounters aren't as scary. Then you would need to change either values from the enemies or change their AI. At that point might as well make a new game. It worked on RE2 remake because it was always the more "actiony" of the franchises but imo it wouldn't work that well for silent hill w/o major overhauls to most game mechanics. The magic of SH is how all the pieces come together and become greater than the sum of its parts.
