Thank you JB for the reaction. I am 66 years old and had the pleasure of seeing the Carpenters live. Karen's sweet voice was as good live as it was on records (sorry..showing my age).. I too had a hard early life loosing both of my parents when I was 7 years old.. Karen's sweet voice got me through my days and years..If you are in the USA..you should visit her grave at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village, California. It is as calm and serene as she was. Please do more Carpenters.. Great work btw..

THEE PERFECT VOICE.. even in this upbeat "pop" song her voice was perfect for it.. perfect tone, crystal clear diction and enunciation, .. the ULTIMATE singer who sang TO YOU NOT AT YOU and made you feel the story of the song, whether a upbeat song like this one or one of their many many legendary love and romance songs at a slower beat. She made you feel joy or sorrow, sadness or hope, love or yearning with her voice and whatever particular song she sang.

A bit of trivia: Karen Carpenter was an avid collector of Disney memorabilia. Her bedroom was loaded with stuffed animals, posters, etc. This video was filmed at Disneyland only 10 miles down the road from their hometown of Downey CA. The Marvelettes and Beatles both previously sang this song. Richard gave it the Carpenter royal treatment with his amazing orchestration. Gotta love those 70s horns and the acoustic guitar at the end. Another masterpiece in their massive catalog of music. 16 Top Ten hits and 150 million records sold worldwide (this is vinyl only - long, long before any downloads.

Please if there is one song to check out its a song called "Now". it was her last ever recording. it wasn't even meant to be the final vocal used, the vocal recorded was only a guide for recording the instrumentation done in typical one take karen style. she died before she got to record the final proper take. being honest, if the vocal on the song wasn't even meant for the final cut, it will show you just how amazing this woman was. from the first sung word, bam it hits you right in the guts the heart and sends your head to a heavenly place. there really will never be anyone like karen again. she was an original one off and i cant as a 39 year old man, not stop myself from tearing up when i hear that voice. PS there is a movie made about her too, ahhh so many amazing songs. another Calling Occupants of interplanetary Craft. recorded for world contact day about making contact with life in the solar system. I think that you respond to her so well because behind that beautiful voice was tortured soul in pain; like calls out to like. This is the concept behind support groups being with others who share whatever condition your heart is in is cathartic because it acknowledges the unseen human connection that we all share. This is also I believe why music is the international translator; one does not need to understand the words to understand the feelings.

So if we can find something pure and fun like the Carpenters, then why not? That's what we need. And yes, I felt the same way, that she was and is the big attraction to their music, but at the same time, Richards songwriting and I think he also arranged the songs, not to mention his great piano playing holds it all together. I did not see this when you first posted it, but I will comment anyway. The song was one of the few songs from the 1950s-1970s which hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 by different artists (The Marvelettes about 1962 and Carpenters in 1975). I believe it was the first song not written by Carole King and Gerry Geffen to do so. Their songs were "Go Away Little Girl" (Steve Lawrence '62 and Donny Osmond '71) and "The Locomotion" (Little Eva '62? and Grand Funk Railroad '74). IMHO, the Carpenters version of "Please Mr. Postman" was definitely more polished than the earlier versions. Further, their version was the biggest selling worldwide. Another "remake" the Carpenters did that is worth listening to is "There's a Kind of a Hush" which was made a hit by Herman's Hermits in the mid-1960s. That was also a big hit internationally for them (only #12 on the Billboard Hot 100; #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts).
