Excellent essay, you captured the essence of this amazing experience. They named their daughter "Old Dolio". It's just... I'm reading a Miranda July short story collection, "No One Belongs Here More Than You" right now, and she comes up with some of the most unbelievable things I've ever read. Like this movie, they're mostly extremely bizarre, yet strangely touching. She goes into a whole bit about the picture of a whale on a birthday invitation stick on a fridge, and i kinda wished i would've died right there, with this being my very last thought.

This was thoroughly enjoyable! I especially liked your last portion about finding meaning in a rigged world. Kajillionaire is one of my favorite movies of all time, and this video (and your insights) was a treat to watch!

Wish i had something more profound to comment but either way great video it was intelligent and kept me interested. This movie meant a lot to me as someone with a similar childhood and victim of abuse and it is unfortunately criminally underrated.

This movie had me the most confused at the ending but now that I watch this I realize how much of a work of art this film is. The passion felt in the actors portrayal of the characters and the way they displayed such an abusive relationship with such a connection to the outsider, your video enlightened me to understand this outstanding art piece. Thank you very much.

Something about the scene where she's face down on the massage table and the tears are falling straight down out of her eyes just killed me.

On a similar note, ever thought of doing video essays on either "The Simpsons" or the Helluverse?

I think the only piece of media I never want to discuss is Mary Poppins. Everything else is fair game, though! I'm just a ridiculously slow creator so I can never figure out a timeline for certain projects. For example, I've been working on a She-Ra video script for over a year, and it's nowhere near done.

@@JennyCook57 Any reasons for never covering “Mary Poppins”? Is it a personal dislike of the movie or do you think it’s just already been picked apart and analysed to death?

@johnvinals7423 Theatre kid trauma-I go into fight or flight mode when I hear any song from Mary Poppins. That being said, Lindsay Ellis’ video essay about the film and the way “Saving Mr. Banks” revised history to favor Disney is a true classic.

Okay, so Richard Jenkins was seventy-three when this film came out while Debra Winger was sixty-five…are we meant to interpret the Dynes as former hippies and this film as a criticism of people who joined movements like that to be seen as “hip” and “cool” and “interesting” rather than out of genuine ideological commitment to the betterment of the world?

IS the reference to "The space between" a shout-out to "Descendants 2", byt the way?

Intentionally? No, but that song does live rent free in my head, so it might've influenced me while I was writing :)

@@JennyCook57 You know, I have a theory that a major reason for the success of the "Descendants" movies is that, while most of their scores are the typical inoffensive Disney Channel Dance Pop stuff, each one of the film has one genuinely excellent song. The first movie has “If Only”, the second movie has “The Space Between”, and the third movie has “My Once upon a Time”.

It's currently streaming on Peacock and fuboTV (two of the least popular streaming services) but it's also a fairly cheap to rent it on Amazon.

I’m pretty sure Gina got cancelled for saying a racist word. I remember she posted a story of herself rapping the n word and had been pretty much blacklisted since then.
