I didn't know there was s Stonefly that comes out to mate in winter. I know of other examples (mostly Chionea, in the Diptera order, which are rather common in our mountains), but never heard of this stonefly species. Do you know how/when they come out of the river? I can see how insects would crawl up a thick layer of snow, but it seems a little harder to come out of a frozen river.

Hi Ran, so in some cases the water is flowing enough that it does not freeze over, but in many cases they are able to emerge in air pockets between the water and surface ice. Surprisingly the temperature in this air pocket is not as harsh since it is insulated by the surface ice, and they can search for cracks or openings in the ice from there!
