A painting is interesting to me if it evokes some kind of emotion - joy, excitement , wonder at the colors , peace

What makes a painting, someone else's painting, interesting to me, is the story that unfolds before my eyes.I try to find what the artist is saying. It takes me on a journey, possibly with the artist, possibly not. You can almost see the Artist mood. Happy, sad, in love. I see these things in a landscape or a portrait of a man or woman. The stories in the wrinkles in their skin tells if they lived a hard life or the smooth relaxed laid back non-stressed person. A tree is not just a tree it has history. This is what I want to see and convey. I have not reached this level of painting but I look forward to arriving.

At nearly 70 years old, what makes a painting interesting to me is simply a fresh viewpoint well executed. Since I paint and sculpt as an amateur, I like to see something and think wow I never considered that.

Your work strongly reminds me of Van Gogh in the direct nature of your strokes, the energy and of course the plein air painting. I can’t help but think that to watch you is similar to watching him paint. I learn so much watching your delicate drawing of your layout, your scumbling scrubbing blocking in of color, how you don’t worry about bare canvas at an early stage. And thank you for mentioning how you’re having to fight the impulse to make regular little repetitive marks because nature is so random. I do that to and I thought it was just me😜. Also the outlining. I really enjoy when you verbally talk out your thinking processes. I just love a painterly, loose look. I ain’t got that🤷🏽♀️. I’m 80 and have been painting about 75 of those years. Still learning. Still loving the process. Still enjoying. 🤓🤓🤓

Hey Turner, Nice to see you out among the Aspens in glorious weather in the Montana Spring. I loved to observe how you built up the layers of paint and how you scraped it off again to then give the scene more definition of colour. The strokes you made as you briskly captured the essence of the scene without overloading the detail. As is your usual custom with landscapes of this nature, you spend more time creating that feeling of intense emotion and feeling into your work that is immediately felt by the viewer when stepping back and truly observing your achievements from a distance, that is the moment the painting reveals something about itself. Amazing work mate, much appreciated. Also thankful for your personal self revelations, reflections etc that show your personality, authenticity, and Honesty as an artist, and as a human being. That is something sbout you and your work that touches my very soul. 😊😢👋🏴🇬🇧👍👍👍

What makes a picture interesting? It is the point of view and the feeling that the artist conveys with his work. This is even more true if it is a view that could have been photographed with a camera. If one would prefer the photorealistic representation, that is the easier way, but the valuable is this view interpreted by the own feelings, which one captures on his canvas or in his sketchbook. This is what makes a picture interesting.

We all see differently, I like a painting that translates how an artist sees a particular subject or color differently than I may. Also, a directness in that translation is awesome to see...no tickling the canvas, just slap that paint on!

It is not crazy. What could be better. Doing what you love and that is your job. Just enjoy the time spent in nature and what you take away. Whether you think you have captured what you want on the canvas is not important, it is the experience. Your interpretation of the landscape is unique.

hello Turner, I didn't understand everything you said. But, what I can say is that I like what you do. And for me, it's the way you paint, the colors you use, the subjects you choose that make your painting interesting. For example, in this one, I really feel the spring reborn in this thick undergrowth. that's wonderful. Well done again for the work you are doing Turner.😊

For me, it's the diversity from individual to individual. I see all sorts of work, from all sorts of people from all over the world when I'm out in plein air groups, and I never get tired of seeing everyone's work at the end of a meet. Some paint in a very soft, subtle manner, just like a classical musician playing a violin. While someone like me is jamming an electric guitar and turning it to eleven with heavy paint, bold contrasts and wild brushwork. Meanwhile, the technicians are painting tight and very precise realism, literally bringing their work "to life". In the end, what makes a painting interesting is honesty. If you're painting to follow a certain trend, a fancy formula, or to please other people, then you'll lose the very thing that makes all of our work interesting - HONESTY.

Mr Snub: your comment is probably the most important link to what makes a good painting special or a great painting phenomenal. Authenticity and that most wonderful, yet difficult expression of all: HONESTY. Something that some paintings lack because as you rightfully point out, have a tendency to follow a known system or method or rote, or as you say, for the attention of others. I believe that for most artists, art is personal, and private, before it ever becomes public or even accepted. To me Turner Vinson is just one such person who takes his art very personal and in many ways, I believe he finds it extremely intense, cathartic and rewardingly satisfying. I say this as one who watches him work from time to time.
@mrsnrub9780

@@Paul-su3qh Agree 100% - and there's also another consideration. If you follow a disingenuous path, and aim to reach a particular destination, (and amass a certain social circle) then EXPECT to be disappointed. Chances are, you'll actually make it there - but when you do, you'll realise it was all an illusion. And I know a LOT of people who fall into this category. They live for the next show, and put all of their eggs into the "pleasing the judges" basket that they don't even know who THEY are anymore. This is why I enjoy Turner Vinson videos, it's a true labour of love for him. And the honesty just pours out from the brush straight onto the canvas.

For me, what makes a painting interesting is if it’s something I couldn’t do. If I’m walking through an art show and go in for a closer look at something, if I feel given enough time I could replicate it, it may be nice but it doesn’t excite me. So for example, your paintings have an impasto style that I’ve never been able to pull off convincingly. Add in that you’re doing landscapes - my primary subject matter - in a way that I can’t, keeps me coming back to watch your videos.

What makes a painting interesting? Tuff question. It's different for every painting I guess. One point for me is that a painting can make you feel... f.i. a place you'd wanna be or a totally different approach of the reality you know. Anyway, watching your work makes me happy! Another thing is: you have so many paintings in your studio, where can people watch them or buy them??? Take care

An interesting painting to me has great light and shadows. Also the dark values seem to make the painting make sense while the colors of all hues and temperatures pop and give me such satisfaction. If it weren't for the dark values though, colors would be flat and not as stimulating! You need the darks to make the light!

To answer your question, I don't think it's any one thing. It depends. It could be the color, the subject matter, the style, or giving the viewer something to ponder, like a path, or what's beyond the trees, etc. In anything I paint, I try to find the focal point and work from there. And you are not alone, of course, there are many artists like you who can live off your earnings, and enjoy doing what you do. I retired and went back to my art, and I live at a prairie preserve here in Illinois where I get to paint or draw whenever I want. Have a good day, Turner!

A painting is a usually rectangular problem that must be solved. What makes a painting interesting is the choices the artist makes in color, value, energy and composition. Each human sees the world differently from all other humans. A painter can only paint his or her personal view if they are being honest. Only honesty creates a valid work. Paintings are a part of an artist’s life, a striving, if you will, to communicate with others, a personal life view, to say, “I see beauty, and have gratitude!” Some people want to say, “it is hopeless!” or, “All is ugly!” But in any case, you view a painting and you see choices that the artist has made. 🤷🏽♀️ You mentioned fee 3:09 ling like a brat! I tell my friends, I am a brat, too. I am chronically sick but I can paint! I am isolated and financially challenged and elderly. But I can paint and I wouldn’t change with anyone, either, because I am so happy, joyous even, and so many have not yet found what they are to do and I am grateful🤓🤓🤓

What makes a painting interesting? Sometimes it is a new way of looking at something - even if you have looked at it 100 times before. One of Canada's most famous painters, Tom Thomson, who lived from 1877-1917 (incidentally, his style is similar to yours in many of his works) ... in his case, what makes his paintings interesting is his unique talent of putting you where he was and seeing exactly what he saw when he painted. When you look at one of his works, you feel like you are looking at it through his eyes and not looking at a painting. At first when I thought of this I thought it was just me, but I've talked to many others and they have said the identical thing. You should have a look at some of his works - I think you'd like them. His most famous painting is called, "The Jack Pine". Cheers.

Respectfully - I think the first day - at 16:41 looks pretty good - at 22.55 it seems like there's simply more of an emphasis (color) on the backlit new foliage. Maybe it's just the time of day (sun/clouds). But, also an example of how it is hard to recapture the same feeling on another day.

I think art is so personal everyone likes things for different reasons,I often find myself standing in front of a piece of art and asking myself why don't I like this, what is it that makes it no good to me and generally it comes down to a few reasons, it has no life or sole or I don't understand what the message is the artist is trying to convey. I guess it's going to be different for everyone but that's the beauty of art.

I guess "interesting" is very personal for the viewer. I find certain things interesting and others not so much and the artist themselves might not agree at all, because their experiences make the artwork interesting to Them, while to me it can only be interesting if I look at it and find something that draws me in, personally. It can be anything. Sometimes things that I wouldn't have thought were interesting I give a second glance because someone else thought it was, and maybe when I give them a little bit more time, when I look a little bit longer I'll find them interesting myself. Not always, though. For me, I don't finish my artworks that I think wouldn't be interesting even to me. At least, I try not to finish them. I kind of follow the "does this spark joy" idea and realize as early as possible that I don't actually like it. Sometimes I can make it work, but usually that involves changing almost about everything, and I only go through the effort if the original idea or subject were important to me. Personally, I don't really care if other people find my work interesting, I only implement my own ideas and inspiration, I don't sell what I draw and I don't accept commissions or anything. I know most of the people online who see huge amounts of various art in their feeds likely won't pay more than half a second of attention to almost anything, and hoping people see the deeper intent or feeling is usually futile. So I would say, everyone would answer that question for themselves, and they would be right. You want to make your art interesting? What makes it interesting to You? Which of your own art do you find interesting? Why?
