Pleiotropic Gene - Principles of Inheritance and Variation | Class 12
• A single gene that controls more than one unrelated character simultaneously is called a pleotropic gene. This phenomenon is called Pleiotropy or Pleiotropism. German geneticist Ludwig Plate coined the term in 1910.
• Pleiotropic Gene (Example): Sickle Cell Anemia is an autosomal recessive disorder. Single Point mutation in HbA gene causes both beta-globin subunits of hemoglobin to change into hemoglobin S (HbS)
• Phenylketonuria: A rare inborn error of metabolism, inherited from a person's parents. The autosomal recessive disease occurs in Chromosome no. 12. Occurs due to Single point mutation in PAH gene that codes for the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH). This results in the buildup of phenylalanine to potentially toxic levels in blood, urine, CSF which affects the brain. Phenotypic expression characterized by mental retardation, intellectual disability, behavioral problems, reduction in hair and skin pigmentation
