Hey Wayne, great video. I would love to see a catch and cook eel episode. I remember my mum always raved about eel. Thanks again

Yep. where the Plenty enters into the Yarra is one of the best spots on the Yarra. Literally at the entrance point. Spent many a day there. Park your car up at the parking lot down by the reserve and you have to walk it. There used to be a billabong right there, but when they ripped out all the trees along the Yarra back in late 80's, maybe it was the early 90's, can't remember exactly now, they soon after that buggered up the billabong too. Any way, enough memories, best bait for eel from my experience is chicken liver. Tried fish guts too, not as good. But the chicken liver showed to be best. & mi old man (RIP) found a recipe from one of the southern europeans for eels which was fantastic. Make a full on spicy marinate for 'em, pepper, paprika and other herbs, cook it all up, let it cool, then pour that into a bucket and drown the eels into it and leave it like that for a few days, then smoke them once a day every second say (3 times in total, = 6 days) After which you cook them til the spine pops out. Tastes absolutely wild mate. Absolutely excellent. & you wouldn't believe how much fat is in eels, when you cook 'em, it all goes to the top of the water. About half an inch at least. Try it, you will not regret it, tastes awesome. Side dish, spuds and some greens on the plate. Mum tried to bake them once, they were good too, but me personally, I got a taste for the cooked version. Cheers mate.

Another good bait is animal liver. My parents used it exclusively back in the sixties. You also get more fishing for them at night.

Good idea. I've read of European fishermen using liver for eels....and fishing at night with good success.

you mention using a "fish magnet" type of liquid at 1:47, did you make that yourself? if so, what did you use to make it? i've been trying to target eels but havent had very good luck other than a few instances and that sounds like a great idea to implement !

I used to make and sell a bait dip I called 'fish magnet'. I don't make it any more but it was good at adding more scent to baits. I do have a bait soak I call 'Fish Magnet', this is for soaking your bait before you fish, rather than just lightly coating it in the 'dip' that was made from a stickier substance.

I'm getting 16kg+ green spotted eels with raw prawns on a paternoster rig. Before that will was chicken giblets and/or chicken soaked in garlic powder. I'm yet to try it, I was told to salt and smoke it for best taste and eating.

@@paulfensome1404 I've seen that! I find if strange that you guys don't get them any bigger than what we would consider small or a pest. As a kid any eel I caught was fun any only ever seen the big ones as they went hiding, some as round as a grown man's thigh! Again though new Zealand is ment to be home to the biggest in the world and even Jeremy Wade the fishing master guy did a show there but all he could find that was somewhat large was in a private Creek and in an aquarium. The ones I get are still small as they're only 4-6ft long and 16+ kg's. I can only imagine what a 10ft green spot long fin would be like! Definitely a broken rod for sure 😅

I have now developed a "Predator Mix" berley that you use dry. You put it into a closed berley cage, which is attached to your line, and it attracts the fish to your bait. The Predator Mix Berley actually seems to repel carp but attract predator species like redfin, eels, and Australian native species fish.
