Ples - the city (with 1925) in the Russian part of the Volga region in the North of Ivanovo region. One of the main tourist centers in Ivanovo region. In the spring of 1888 Isaac Ilyich Levitan, along with fellow artists Alexei Stepanov and Sofia Kuvshinnikova went on the boat along the Oka river to Nizhny Novgorod and then up the Volga. While traveling they suddenly discovered the beauty of a small, quiet town of Plyos. They decided to stay and live there for a while.
In the end, Levitan held in Plyos three extremely productive summer season (1888-1890). In the late 1880s - early 1890-ies Levitan headed the landscape painting class at the School of fine arts artist-architect A. O. Gunst.
