Internal and innermost intercostal muscles course obliquely starting at the costal angle, whereas the external intercostal muscle begins at the tubercle of the rib to the costochondral junction.

thank you a lot this was helpful too ! I have a question here, my lecture says: "the surface projection of the parietal and visceral pleura,starts with the anterior projection at the level of the second coastal cartilage." parietal and visceral pleura are stuck with the lungs , and the lungs are 2.5cm i think out in the neck , so how could it start at the 2nd coastal cartilage ???????????????? I wish you could help and thank you again :) regards.

+Mariam Yaroof Hmmm ... I don't know if i understand the notes from your lecture. You are correct in that the cervical parietal pleura project 2-3 cm above the clavicle into the neck. I don't know why the 2nd costal cartilage is mentioned in your notes. I should also mention that only the visceral pleura is stuck to the lungs ... the parietal pleura is adhered to the ribs. Does this help?
