I opted to set up basic SFTP and SMB file sharing and use whichever video player I like. Kodi works best for me for streaming. To be clear, I don't care about transcoding on the fly and I like simple interfaces where I can get to what I want quickly, so I have no need for artwork and descriptions for things I already know in most cases, so I'm not saying my setup is best. It works for me. If I was starting out, or needed that transcoding, I'd start with Jellyfin.

Over the last few years, i have read many requests from the community. By far the majority of them want more transcoding options, more stable Apps, clearer and more modern UI etc. What about transcoding and encoding into x265 or AV1 ? Wouldn't that be nice ? Nobody wants the kind of features that plex implements year after year, realize that nobody uses them and then removes them after a few years or even months. Please dear Plex developers, listen to your community.
@TheEvox81
10 ай бұрын
Plex's problem is now one of audience. The tech users who are going to use Plex are likely already doing so. So they're trying to find new users and have been adding weird features with that in mind. Which means, while x265 encoding would be a great addition, your mom isn't going to sign up for Plex because they add it! Plex isn't a massive corporation. They've prioritized their development efforts to those things they think will bring in users. In fact, adding "now includes x264, x265, and AV1 transcoding capabilities" to a feature list, would actively discourage a vast majority of the casual market... because they don't know what any of that means and they don't care. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Plex take a step back to its nerd roots... But that just isn't where they are today. I may not like it, but I get it.
