I know KZitem uses algorithms & is trying to “harvest,” (Perfect word for it, btw), my attention just like the others, but it doesn’t seem to have the same kind of pull of addiction as fb or instagram or many of the others. It’s the only social media I still use. I wonder if it may be that using KZitem is not completely dedicated to social activity; it only has a social media element to it-via likes & comments. The videos are relatively long, detailed, & interest specific to something like tik-tok.

@@fernforwood3989 YT is just another network that weaponises social interactions for narcissistic indulgence. Its why it doesn't count dislikes to videos & comments, it used to, yet there's a clear user motive as to why it removed it. The fact YT allows unregistered, non-verified accounts, allows for psychological bullying by unknown actors, plus state & privately financed propaganda machines. They know this is a massively problem affecting the mental wellbeing of its users, yet YT does nothing, so imho this is complicit enabling on an industrial scale.

You’re absolutely right on the effects of social media. Great documentary. Thank you. But there are many of us who have a purpose to our lives on this Earth. Many of us with a desire to help our fellow man. To treat our fellow man with respect and dignity. To speak truth to power. To expose evil and lies. Many of us HAVE a purpose. It’s just a shame that the scummy, evil “elite” who think they control the world are such psychopathic satanists. They will have their comeuppance in this world or the next. So rest easy. Good will always prevail as long as good men continue to speak out and fight for truth.

I left facebook almost a year ago when I had an abrupt awakening. I would then reactivate about once a month and recognized immediately how awful, lonely, and isolated I felt on there, primarily based on the lack of any interaction from my "friends." My friends now come in the form of crows, squirrels, deer in our yard. The ocean waves, the grass below my feet, and the sunshine on my face. It truly feels to me at this point, there are two options. Social media, or Nature.

Last fall, I recognized that I was, if not already, becoming depressed. I couldn't figure out why though since there didn't seem to be anything wrong with my life. I started to notice how down I felt after getting off a SM platform. I'm a naturally shy person so I wouldn't make many posts or comments so I was used to not getting many notifications or "likes". Like many, I also noticed that I wasn't receiving the kind of interactions I wanted from people through SM and it made me feel unwanted and alone. On top of this, seeing everyone else I followed post envy-inspiring photos or announcements would automatically make me compare myself to them. I eventually saw the pattern and decided I'd had enough near the end of November. I deactivated my FB and IG accounts, leaving only Pinterest (for recipes and art/home projects) and KZitem (I'm seldom on here anyway). The whole month of December would be my cleanse. No SM until the new year. At first, I found myself checking my phone...a lot...and for no real reason. But the longer I stuck with it, the less frequent my habitual ticks to check my phone became. Once January rolled around, I didn't even want to be back on SM so I stayed off until mid-March. I got back on IG because I found myself wanting to connect only with those I had a genuine interest in following (which hadn't been my previous approach to SM). I pruned my list of those I followed down to certain artists and a few friends. I feel much better now about the time I spend on there since I actually care about the happiness and success of those I follow and don't find myself comparing my life to theirs. I'm still not on FB though; I think the drama and negativity that slinks around there is a huge motivator for me to continue keeping my distance from it. Overall, I'm happier and feel more motivated to strive for the things I want out of life. It's quite liberating. :) TL;DR: I decided to do a a SM cleanse for month; one month became 3.5 months; depression has subsided and I feel more positive and determined to tackle my future.

The problem is that when you come off SM, you do become excluded in lot of ways, as so many are plugged in now and some exclusively. You use SM and you can still become isolated. Is it too late now and because the majority use it almost exclusively, does that mean isolation for users and non - users now? Are we that far down the line, we are damned if we use and damned if we don't? I crave true intimacy, I grew up and lived in authentic connection with people. We used disposable cameras that showed us looking like shit, no filters and we would laugh at each other without offense. Part of the fun was not knowing what we would get, capturing moments without editing. We walked and talked in connection, with out stopping to do selfies and share intimate moments with everyone.

I so love this comment. I want to completely delete my facebook account because I get caught up in the scrolling but then there are a couple groups I'm part of that help me a lot with a personal issue of mine and there are people there with that in common. Even making plans to actually see someone or a group of people in person entails making those plans on SM or at the very least via text. And I don't even use my phone for the internet. I do all of that on a laptop.

I suppose it's on us to reshape the expectations of fellow SM users. I have not been able to use fb or LI because it would jeopardize my physical safety. I am also an unemployed I.T., sales and CS professional. I have no choice but to brainstorm. I don't exist, at best I'm suspect without a linked in profile. How to network without sm or safely and effectively with sm? SM has caused me some depression but not for the usual reasons. My struggle is common for survivors of any kind of violence and bullying. I pray just one person who makes hiring decisions reads, believes and makes one right decision because of it.

Isolation by spending your time interacting with pixels or isolation because spending one's time interacting with pixels is the new normal. Entirely per chance I decided to remove my social media accounts today, save for KZitem which I primarily use for educational purposes anyway. The documentary was great by the way, people need to hear this message. See you in the real world people, say hi.

My wife of 22 yrs got one of those stupid smart-phones about 1 1/2 yrs ago....I noticed the behavioural changes...the almost bi-polar stuff of gloom & raging mania...just a few weeks ago this bed-side device went off in the middle of the night, rather loudly....in the early stages of amorous caresses..she snatched the phone off the nightstand without skipping a beat....she says nothing has changed, nothing is different...the "blindness" is complete.

What a brilliant documentary, hats off to you Richard. I gave up facebook over a year ago and I have never looked back. I had a very sucessful group on there and I put alot of work into it. The thing I found was that it was more trouble than it was worth. The level of toxic people joining to spoil it for genuine members was unreal. No matter how good your intentions on facebook toxic assholes seem to bore their way in and cause mayhem. These were people in their 30s, 40s and 50s, talk about infantile behaviour! It's like the bullies were back in the school yard. Facebook is a haven for narcissists, cluster bs who need attention and will get it at any cost. Social media is destroying society indeed.

That was absolutely essential information that we all need have open eyes and ears for. Growing an online presence is the new reality. The media is the middle man between you and your true feelings. You have to learn to care more about what you think about yourself than someone else's opinion. Then you can have your own point of view, and self awareness, which is accepting your shortcomings, while also accentuating your strengths.

Last year, I unplugged from social media, I tried to embody everything I learned from JP about the hierarchical nature of groups and how to stand tall (no more 4Fs) when challenged, developer competence, and aim for as deep and rich real world intimate exchanges as I could possibly experience. Sam and Richard are correct. There is nothing more delicious and satisfying. Once you experience the real thing of intimacy, you write poetry/sing music about the experience for the rest of your life. I love the morphic resonance (realizing same insights but separately) that continues between this tribe who have touched the abyss but are dispersed across the globe...

VERY Well-written :). I feel the same way. I'm 30 now, but feels like EVERYBODY in my generation is hooked on social validation by proxy, and have NO or little understanding of love and intimacy. Suspects that people will, or already lost the ability to feel intimacy even during sex. Everything has gotten SO Cold and distant. Love from a Swedish tribe-member :)

Awesome work Richard. I've been using a dumb phone for years, I can't mentally deal with social media & people do look at me crazy cause I'm not on any platform. I really enjoy peace being alone when I need to be which is pretty much always. I can see where I'm going & think my own thoughts cause I'm not looking at my phone. Its sad we're being played through technology, awareness is critical. Thank you for taking on this research and great documentary.

My son is 9 and has a lot of disabilities and is in the process of going to a special needs school or a residential special needs school, it has just dawned on me watching this that I am pleased that he won't be in mainstream school. I will never let him go on social media because I do not want him being bullied, and I want him to stay alive. Thank you Richard, your work is excellent. Lots of love, light and blessings to you xxx

I'm not sure if restricting works. Better to talk with your daughter, become curious what she gets out of it, how does social media give her satisfaction, what is she really craving for? Make her to think about it, teach her to make her own decisions, teach her she is valuable without the validations of the likes.

Excellent content. What also proves (anti)social media is an addiction is the number of users who will deny they have a problem with it. Ive found that whenever i discuss the negatives of it & its addictive nature, with people who i know are constant users, they mostly all agree but follow that up with statements like....."oh but i only use it to keep in touch with friends/family who dont live near me" or " oh i only use it for business" etc....when in reality these same people constantly have their heads in their fones. To them its always everyone else who has a problem. Its the classic reaction of denial & trying to convince themselves that they dont have a problem. Very worrying!

Great documentary. Had recently been the victim of a bullying hate group on Twitter. Was bullied as a kid, and the online version is so much more vicious. People have your photos, your likes, your past arguments etc to begin a character assassination on you. It can get nasty quickly. This is vital watching.

This is a great video. It is so sad what social media is doing to us. I was getting insane plus I was struggling with ptsd and social media made it worse. I felt more sick and more different than all the people in the that seemed to have a “happy”. It is insane that I believed that it was reality. I deleted social media 1 month ago and I felt more anxiety because I felt I was quitting te world but I actually was coming back to it. Not I feel less depressed and there is life outside social media. We can still text and this is the limit for me. I hope you all guys see what reality is.

Thank you for this. I’ve been off social media for nearly a year now but still finding it hard to connect as people are so absorbed in it. It seems that people have plenty of time to scroll mindlessly but not meet up in person. Sad times indeed. I’ve had acquaintances look at me as if I’m mad for not being on socials and new people being highly suspicious. I crave connection and it’s affecting my mental health considerably.

Totally agree. We all need to remember to just enjoy actually living.... I've always tried to involve my boys with loads of after school activities so they are 'doing' stuff and talking to actual people. Thankfully my grown up boys are very level headed and switched on with jobs that don't allow much time to be on their phones. But it is something I'm really aware of with my younger boys... Good post

SO well done. Thank you for putting together such a powerful message. I've been off social media for a very long time, and have to say that even simpler modes of connection, like texting, can have similar effects (anxiety, depression, if a friend doesn't respond, for example). This film has validated much of what I've noticed happening within myself and the people around me.

Thank You SO MUCH for this message, Richard. You put it into words what I had already been feeling about SM for a very long time. I knew that it was affecting me too much in a negative way so I had already decided to delete FB for myself. I deleted my accounts about a month ago and I feel SO MUCH BETTER since I have done this for myself. I was so depressed from reading all the screaming, fighting, and cursing of my so-called friends that were on my accounts. One thing that I have not seen you address and what affects many people with going online is how we literally absorb all the different energies into ourselves from those that we interact with in SM. It affects us in numerous negative ways. For instance, when you have a person who is toxic and is bullying you online you are absorbing their toxic energy and it stays with you long after the fact. This is the main reason I deleted all of my SM accounts online. My family hasn't understood my reasoning at all as to why I had chosen to delete them but I just knew that it was bad for me. Every time that I would go on my account and I would read all the arguing about politics mostly and other general stuff it would make me feel anger, depression, sadness, strife. I HATED IT. I had also noticed myself how I got more comments and likes from when I would post a selfie of myself. I never thought about the fact that it was making me think more about myself and make me narcissistic per se. I did to some degree but not to the extent that you explained in all the details as to how these things affect us in every aspect of our being. Now I can send the link of your video to my family and friends. Then they can see that I wasn't just doing it to be mean or that I was mad at them. I just knew that I was losing my spark in my life and for my life. Hopefully, my loved ones will watch the whole thing for themselves and see just how much SM tears down the fabric of society and what makes a human a real human. Thanks again. This message needs to go worldwide before humanity ends up being the one that becomes extinct.

I am one of the dinosaurs as the guy said, but you know what, I feel so lucky because I'm not addicted to social media. I never use it and don't need it, and I feel great, except of course for missing the good old days when people were free and paid attention to each other. it's so true that you can feel alone in a crowd as I do going to work every day on the subway. I have done enough study of programming algorithms to get me in potential trouble and sound humorously stupid instead of randomly out in space. I noticed that I was getting a lot of "pet peeve" rant videos so I consciously and purposely made myself ignore them to train the algorithm to stop sending them to my front page to dodge the toxic wave I saw on the horizon. I have seen youtubers literally state that sometimes negative videos are created just to get more views because that's how it works (at least often enough to be a talking point in some youtube communities). *** When IM first came out it irritated me in the way it kept interrupting my college howework concentration so I dropped it fast. Now at work I put my phone away and ignore it while I'm talking to people and doing other things but this has almost become a foh-pah and there is an expectation that if someone texts me at work I will respond like, immediately. Most of the others do. It's like the dependency and pluggedinness is slowly becoming a requirement or at least normative.
