I suffered through a work injury that has left me with severe nerve damage. I went to my primary doctors countless times but was turned away and given "extra stretches" I can do. I'm not a med student, but I only know about PM&R because I'm a patient of a PM&R physician. My own personal experience has made me interested in wanting to go to school, and hopefully in the future med school. My main interest is obviously PM&R, but any specialty that will help me treat patients that have spinal issues like me will work too.

Hi, I know this was one year ago, BUT I'm entering into med school in July and my school doesn't have a PM&R department or any electives in the field. There are some private practice PM&R docs in the area (mostly in pain), but that's it. How did you go about getting experience with PM&R? I'm not sure what I want to do yet, but I'm interested in PM&R.

M2 here, surprised I just came across these as I was one of the few people who went into med school thinking of doing PM&R right off the bat. Your point on being type A hits the nail on the head and unfortunately is applicable to me. There's the half of me that wants to grind all day every day (e.g., ortho or IM subsec) and the other half that wants balance. There's also the peer pressure to account for when your classmates undermine the field. I almost wish it was more competitive. I'm lucky enough to go somewhere that has a PM&R residency so I've had some exposure. But I guess I won't know my fit until 3rd year. Best wishes in residency and keep up the good content.

It sounds like PM&R lends well to sports medicine in general though. Would you ever want to pursue a fellowship in sports medicine after you finish residency? I would like to eventually end up as a team physician of sorts as I currently work as an ATC and will be applying to med school soon but I‘ve mostly been thinking emergency medicine as my main residency then doing a sports medicine fellowship until I discovered your videos. I hadn’t ever really considered PM&R but it sounds great!

Hey Brian, I have a question about PM&R lifestyle. What was your schedule like after intern year? I know this can be a hard question to answer based on rotation but an average would be awesome. 7am-4pm? Longer? I'm an MS2 in my second year, halfway through my clerkship. I hate the work life balance and it is mentally killing me. Not to say I would choose a field for the lifestyle during residency but my health is my #1 priority and I can't enjoy my work if I don't take care of myself first. Thus I was wondering your thoughts. I've been thinking about PM&R about for a while and plan on doing an elective on it. I do like MSK, but I hear PM&R getting shit on a lot so just wanted to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks.

It is so amazing to see your channel grow so quickly! As an athlete myself, I'm very intrigued by sports science and working with athletes. Does PMR allow you to work with athletes all the time or that is always just reserved for orthopedic surgeons? Is PMR related to physical therapy in a sense where you diagnose musculoskeletal diseases such as (sciatica, hernia) and treat them at a higher level? I REALLY love your content and how you explain all the sports injuries. It's starting to lean me towards PMR ^_^.
@zacharymakovich3212
4 жыл бұрын
This is late but PM&R sports med fellowships are hard to come by. Most of the non-surgical sports med opportunities are rooted in family medicine. You'd think that with the neuro-MSK backgrounds more opportunities would exists in physiatry. However this is partly due to the fact that as the family med sports doc you're able to handle all the medical concerns of athletes, not just sports related issues (think team physician). That doesn't mean you can't do sports med in PM&R, as I've seen some physiatrist in ortho outpatient clinics. If you want to pursue that you should go to a residency that has high placement into the sports med fellowships. As for PT relations, physiatrists work closely with PT on a daily basis. They diagnose conditions and then talk with the PTs about what goals are set for the patient (e.g., increased shoulder mobility and strength).

Can you comment on the job outlook on PM&R in big cities in NY or CA? With a quick search on the internet, it seems as if there's not that many jobs offered and can be difficult to find on especially in the big cities. Just wanted to hear your thoughts

It's tough to find tons of jobs in big coastal cities regardless of the field. Usually pay is less and they can be less appealing (more call, busier, higher census), but that's not all places. We are only a few months in but we already are getting stuff about jobs throughout the country. Bottom line in my opinion the field is growing and I wouldn't let that discourage people from choosing it as a specialty
