"我的" means "my". "朋友" means "friend". The rabbit🐰 here speaks Mandarin, while I speak Cantonese. She and I write the same way but pronounce syllables differently.

One pictogram is one syllable. Sometimes one syllable forms one noun. Sometimes two syllables form one noun. Chinese does not have an alphabet.

Each pictogram of Chinese represents one "whole syllable" of speech, and not a vowel or consonant. Each noun can be either one syllable or two syllables. Isn't that interesting?
