About the "difficulties" mentioned near the end of the video with Gold and Silver- here's a fun fact: Apparently the dev team had run out of cartridge space. Then Chadoru Iwata came along and was like "I gotchu" and showed them a new compression algorithm for the game which cut the space in half. This gave them the idea to put Kanto in the game.
@MrDuckyGoosy

Let's be honest, Colosseum and XD were better games anyway. Admittedly, I was not a fan of them being purely double battles (with a very small handful of exceptions in XD) but the Pokemon themselves felt far more alive. The visceral reactions to being hit, being hit with a critical or a super effective move, not to mention the emotion you could see as they fainted. It was just a better made game. I really don't know how gamefreak have managed to make pokemon feel so lifeless lately, especially when even looking clear back in stadium and stadium 2, they actually reacted to getting hit rather than just giving a split second reused flinch but not even budging from their default position..
@MerkhVision
Жыл бұрын
@John John u bring up a good point, the limited amount of Pokémon included probably gave them more time to work on detailed animations for them, which explains why those games battles looked the way they did while current Pokémon games have way less animation because they have to deal with over 600 Pokémon models.

@@meowmasterL346 yea, though they also reused stuff from the pokemon stadiums for the older mons - same models, animations as back then. so that accounts for 251/386, and in the end they would've dealt with ~135. still quite a lot, but also only like 20% of 600, and nowadays there's like 900 colosseum was so good though, i wish they'd go back to a more segmented experience for a side game like that

@@meowmasterL346 no, i agree. colosseum was one of my favourite games growing up, and it was packed with personality. the most phoned-in it ever got outside of battles just about matches the best it ever gets inside of battles now, which is a little sad. i was just playing devil's advocate. it's true they have way more on their plate now, with so many mons it's inevitable they'll either under-deliver or have to cut mons for tighter focus, and a lot of people will oppose either option. but they under-delivered more than they should have. this is also true.

In all honesty, the issues with Gold/Silver probably held Gamefreak back from developing this, bit also the limitations of the N64. The N64 had extremely limited storage space, especially early on. In fact, the original, Japan only version of Pokemon Stadium didnt even have all the pokemon playable. This was one of the reasons not many RPG's were on the platform. Having to render/store 151 to 251 pokemon as well as hundreds of moves AND an entire map with story elements was probably impossible on the N64.
@MLPIceberg
Жыл бұрын
I dunno if it would have been impossible. Very difficult to the point it'd be better to light the project on fire and throw yourself off a bridge? Yes. I've played some games that should not run as well as they do on old platforms. The devs for those games pulled some kind of demon from their asses. But... with GameFreak's "Tradition" of putting only a dozen (maybe 20) people on a project at any given time, I'm sure that would have been impossible for them.

No one can know for sure, but this might have been one of Nintendo's biggest mistakes. A mainline, new gen Pokémon title in home consoles would have been a HUGE boost to Nintendo consoles, especially at the height of Pokémania in the late 90s and early 2000s. Nintendo needed that boost in order to compete with the PS1 and PS2. Imagine a world in which the N64 and the GameCube had been as successful as the competition, and therefore Nintendo wouldn't have had to change its market strategy and could have kept making powerful hardware (remember, since the Wii Nintendo has decided that it should cut costs on hardware and be like one generation below the competition). The impact of Pokémon 64 could have been huge. And when it comes to the Pokémon franchise, it's possible that GameFreak would have gotten a lot more experience making 3D games. And a lot more investment at the time. GF is not a particularly good developer; they only really specialized in making a simple 2D rpg style game, which is why they have struggled so much with making a transition to 3D. But things could have been different if they had been making 3D Pokémon games since the 90s, and Nintendo had been heavily investing in it at the time.

Really fascinating stuff. I know that the images shown here were rendered by fans- but it makes me wonder that if on SOME level, people WERE confirmed to have been working on this project, whatever happened to that work? Is it something that could possibly be seen publicly, no matter how early level production it was someday. I got into Pokemon around 97 or 98. So I was about 13 or 14. Even at that age, it was just such a blast, such a magical thing to me. I miss having that kind of innocence where I care about something so much. I used to daydream about leaving my hometown and doing something worthwhile with my life. I was REALLY trapped in a no name town, and I was too young to understand it then, but I was in a home where abuse was normal, but that may parents didn't really understand what abuse was. So a lot of unhealthy behaviors were poisoning myself and my siblings all along. And today we are men in our 40s (almost 40s for me) who still have those lingering effects of those entrapments. To me, it's insane that I can look back with any semblance of fondness in those times. But I guess the main point I'm getting at is that Pokemon was such an escape that it meant the world to me. Sigh. You almost feel dumb for asking where the time goes when most of the "good ol days" was either you getting hit, or absorbing the toxicity that will may adulthood a greater challenge than it needs to be.

In my opinion, the N64 should've been a zip disk based system in the first place if not a CD based one. The only things I'd improve with the N64 Zip Disks would be to double the amount of storage on the format from 64MBytes(512MBits), to 128MBytes(1024MBits)! Just enough for RPGs, bigger and better open world games, and just a better quality of software variety, slightly increase the internal RAM from 4MGS to 6MGS(and have a 6MG RAM expansion Pak sold seperately), slightly increase the texture swap cache from 4KBytes to 6KBytes, and be backwards compatible with SNES games with an SNES add-on device akinned to that of the Super Gameboy for the SNES. This wouldn't have de-throned Sony from 1st place during 5th gen console since they were more flexible with their own finances, but an N64 console that could've sold 45 to 50+ million units compared to 30 to 33+ million units(which still isn't too shabby for a cartridge based console, but it could've been better), would've meant Nintendo's next console the GameCube could've had a better chance with more mature hardware to offer during the 6th generation. Which in turn, would've meant more variety in software support!

That way to get the entire Pokedex people would need 4 cartridges and they could have sold tons of games that way. Or they could have just made entirely new fully 3d games. the 64DD is a bad example of company's blindness by ego. they stuck with cartridges when clearly CD storage format was the future shown years prior, so they had to make an add-on to compete with high flying playstation and Saturn, only to have dev headaches to delay 4 years and finally came out in 99 when a much power windows 98 was better option for internet entertainment and communications, while Dreamcast is out and ps2 is on the horizon. why would japanese ppl pay more for an addon when they can get the aforementioned powerhouses. nintendo wasnt dominating the japanese gaming culture like the famicom days anymore so yeah you can also say we didnt get pokemon RPG cuz nintendo backstabbed sony and refused to go to the next level in tech to keep their old business model of collecting fees for cartridges lol
