Podcast Episode #116 - The USAF Office of Special Investigations in Germany with Michael Honeggar
Michael Honegger spent much of his childhood in West Germany, where his father was stationed with the US military. Growing up, he never understood much about his father’s job, even there on the front lines of the Cold War.
Unusual incidents would later take on greater significance for him as he sought to reconstruct his own past and learn more about his father’s life and career after his passing. His father worked for the US Air Force but not in uniform. There was one morning when he came downstairs for breakfast to find a strange man asleep on the couch. There were the family getaways that often took them surprisingly close to the border with East Germany. And there was his father’s constant reply to any questions that young Michael asked about his work at the time: “Do you have the need to know?”
For episode 116 of the Spycraft 101 podcast, I spoke with Michael about his efforts to learn more about just what his family was involved in for those years in West Germany. His father, assigned to the Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations, was never one to talk openly about his work, but Michael, now an accomplished photographer, put some of the pieces together himself after contacting the US Air Force and the German Spy Museum, and returning to the area he grew up in many years later.
