This may be as important as empirical observation leading to basic understanding as that of yeast breads in nutrition. For centuries it was noted that those eating yeast breads had better health, but it was the late 19th century before science understood the roles of vitamins in nutrition and health, vitamins produced in abundance by yeasts.

Seems to me that mycorrhiza researchers should be more focused on perennials since they reduce soil disturbance; and companion planting since the mycorrhizal fungi act as an extension to plant roots and likely a middleman between companion plants.
