The one great thing about Ribbon microphones is how simple their construction is. Usually the only thing that goes "bad" is the ribbon and you can get that replaced. A microphone that could last you a lifetime. I'd be interested if Shure could offer a ribbon replacement service using their patended material

An artist I ended up having a recording session with two hours after I filmed my unboxing video of it got to be the first one to use it and she loved the way it sounded! Basically everything else, from discord calls to youtube videos to games and movies and sometimes music if I want something that I can crank the bass on for some guilty pleasure listening and it's been a *super* valuable addition to my day to day And beyond sounding really nice for a wireless closed back, the range of the wireless dongle it comes with is so good I can walk anywhere in my house with my headphones on and never lose connection to my PC it's great, they've become my cooking and cleaning companions too for that reason So yeah Audeze Maxwell are my pick for my favorite new gear of 2023

To answer the question at the end, I've gotten two mics this year, your favourite SM7B, and an Austrian Audio OC18. And I've been using the same El Gato Wave XLR the last two years now. A lot of my recording is for VO, voice acting, and Described Video for my work, the latter being the more work related instead of just hobby. I like the sound the SM7B has, but it's not as good for me as the OC18 for some of the character stuff I do, so I've been mostly using the large diaphragm condenser mic a lot more often, because described video isn't done as often. But I'll be ordering the Framework Quick Release attachments so I can swap between the two significantly faster, and by next year's wrap up I'll be able to give a good review

The Start demo was great. I like it. The humbuckers produce a unified sound like the strings are mixed together evenly but on the Strat each string jumps out at you and you even get a different amount of distortion per string and as the level decays. There is no better 500 lunchbox. I also use every day the 1010 bluebox (and control the volume from my sofa 10 feet away via MIDI 🙃) and the Blackmagic ATEM MINI ISO with a bunch of AIDA 100 full HD mini cams for my podcast and streaming demands, as well as a Sennheiser HMD27 Headset (which has phones starting at 8Hz instead of your 15Hz and a great microphone, I think I would swap to an HME27 though as it has a cardiod instead of a hypercardiod mike which is probably better for rejecting keyboard and fan noise). Hi! New subscriber and this is already one of my favourite review channels, if not my #1. I've been binge watching! I'm going to start an English as a second language KZitem channel in 2024 from my home office and I currently have wireless GO II, 2nd gen focusrite, and macbook pro. I want to make sure I have killer audio because teaching of course involves a lot of voiceover. I'm thinking about the following: 1.) Upgrade wireless GO ii to the Rode wireless Pro (i can still get full refund on unopened wireless ii) and/or 2.) Se Dynacaster or rode PodMic USB (loved your reviews of both). Can you offer any guidance?
@Podcastage
9 ай бұрын
If you’re looking for studio quality voice over the answer would be the Dynacaster or PodMic USB. I’m not familiar with the Wireless Go II or the Wireless Pro because I have not used them yet, but lav mics (and I would classify those inbuilt mics as lav mics) have a very distinct sound which isn’t necessarily the best for studio voice over work. If you’re out and about recording video and you do not want a mic to be as visible, then those wireless mics may be the correct choice, but if you’re sitting at a desk with reflective surfaces, an omnidirectional mic is less than ideal because it will pick up all the reflections. When it comes to picking between the Dynacaster and PodMic USB that comes down to what setup you want XLR or USB and which one you like the sound of.

I find the music man, and g&L to be some of Leo fenders best work. I have a delux g&L, I didn’t love the pickups in it, so I changed the humbucker out with a bare knuckle holy diver. I think I always gravitate to Gibson.. i really like the 490t and 490r in the sg, or even the 57 classics. But i have to say, i really am digging the tone in a telecaster.. i always hated the look, but i really like how it sings. I go from my from my guitar into a line6 hd500x, that way i can change amp tones on the fly with the software. And for all my main recording, i use the rodecaster pro 2

Always good content, Bandrew, Happy Holidays! I found a sleeper mic! I've used the Rode NT1 for about 4 years for spoken word. Like it, never loved it. Used a TLM103 at the day job, didn't like it as much as I wanted to and found negligible difference in sound, at least not enough to invest right now. My new go-to? An MXL 3000 that I bought on ebay used for 75 bucks. I guess my voice likes cheap gear, because this smokes the NT1 for me, with a caveat. The self-noise is a whopping 19, so yikes. A quick high pass at 45 nudges my noise floor back down to where I need it without hurting the sound.

Thank you very much for the information. I haven’t seen anything about the MXL3000, but I’m glad you’ve found one that works out well for ya. Happy recording BadMiddens.

My favorite new gear this year is the UAD Apollo TwinX Quad. It’s expensive, & the plugins are expensive, but it’s unbeatable for quality wet-mix voice for talking-head videos when paired with the Sennheiser MKH50.

It really does it’s job well if the plugins fit your need. I love the UA ecosystem and it works well for my workflow too. Congrats on that new pick up.

Solid video, but disagree about Focusrite 4 gen. In 2023 we get a lot really excited audiointerfaces, and F4 not one of them. P.S. My fav gears of 2023: Black Lion Audio Auteur DT (best mic pre on budget), totally agree with headset - Audio Technica m50xSTS, audiointerface - most tough choice and i pick Arturia AudioFuse 16Rig - because it's really good ratio of goodness for a buck (altough i pick different new AI from 2022 for myself, still it was pretty close call), best mic even harder to pick - defintly should give props to Lewitt - let's say winner is Pure Tube. 🙂
@Podcastage

I did not say it was the best interface released, I stated it was my favorite release that I reviewed and I prefaced that segment by pointing out that I only reviewed two interfaces and two preamps. I don’t recommend stuff that I have not tried personally so I only had two to pick from. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the winners, the Pure tube was in the running for my favorite as well.

Audio-Technica needs new material for the earpads. I was at Guitar Center today and even the demo units in the store were already shedding. I only buy headphones with velvet cloth pads because my skin oil seems to break down the stuff they use on fake leather ones.

Why you have never reviewed the AKG Perception 100 being one of the legends of the last years on the Microphone Geeks World? I feel like there must be a lot of people wondering your opinions about it. We know there is some harshness on it, but having it in your voice would help us compare with others you have reviewed. Hope you find one.

I don’t have one, but thanks for the suggestion. In most cases I stick to mics that are still in production so I can get a new one and ensure I’m demoing the real quality of the mic and not something that has been beaten up or mistreated. There are rare exceptions to this like the SM7 and SM5b. Perhaps in the future I will get around to checking out the 100, but this is the first recommendation that I recall receiving to cover it.

I have owned AT-40 headphones and AT-2100 USB mic and hated both. the headphones sounded thin and shrill. returned them immediately. the mic was used by my daughter for music and streaming and it fell apart after very little usage. I am done with AT going forward. their lower end stuff just sucks.

Only 54 seconds in and feel compelled to comment. Would mic and headphone manufacturers not shift more stock if they gave their products normal names? I don't mean the way that Marks & Spencer in the UK name their styles of bra or underwear (as much as I love my friend Emma, I don't really want her rubbing up against my boobs and lady bits all day long, although I suppose maybe that could be fun!). I don't mean IKEA style (but, come to think of it - there's a challenge for you, Bandrew. If you had to give IKEA-style names to your top 5 mics, what would they be called?). I just mean that manufacturers should give their beautiful creations your everyday kind of pronounceable names that help to distinguish and identify the product. Just a thought. Oh, and are there any other girlies lurking here? Love the channel, Bandrew! Felicitations of the season and all that! Love from Hannah
