'God's Grandeur' read by Samuel West :~Music "The Quiet Life" composed and performed by Oliver Wakeman
'One of the greatest sources of poetical delight is description, or the power of presenting pictures to the mind'. So said Dr. Johnston and in the poetry of natural the world vivid pictures abound. Who can fail to recognise the imagery of a 'host of golden daffodils' ( and, indeed, the poem), or the description of the skylark as if soars in the sky above? The most insignificant creatures have fascinated the poets: the tiniest frog or spider or bee, the humble mole, each has given rise to a portrait in words. The seasons have also provided inspiration: the pleasures of ambling along a country lane in Spring; the 'mists and mellow fruitfulness' of Autumn; The silvery sharpness of a frosty Winters's day. For many poets, the small details in nature have confirmed a spiritual belief. Others have witnessed, often idealised, a simpler way of life, now largely passed. But it is the depth of feeling that nature instils in the poet which truly captures our hearts: 'Oh, to be in England now that April's there'!
