"Poidu l' ya, vyidu l' ya" (Shall I Go Down into the Valley) is a Russian folk song arranged by Alexander Tikhonovich Gretchaninov (1864-1956), included in his "Three Great-Russian Folk Songs" (1916-17), op. 77.
А. Gretchaninov is a Russian academic composer, a disciple of Rimsky-Korsakov, best known for his choral works and arrangements of folk songs. Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1925). Stylistically, he was a late follower of the national soil aesthetics of the "Mighty Handful".
Gretchaninov's choral works are an original phenomenon in Russian musical culture. Following the great precepts of the classical composers, he was able to create choral works of high artistic significance, in which the best traditions of national musical art are embodied. Most of all interested in folk song and the accompanying ethnographic material, Gretchaninov collected and arranged a large number of folk songs, in particular Russian, Belorussian, Tatar, Bashkir and other. For many years he actively participated in the work of the Musical and Ethnographic Commission at Moscow University, and since 1903 he became its Deputy Chairman. A deep love for musical folklore and active study of it were the basis on which the composer's professional thinking and original style of choral writing were formed.
📌 Lyrics:
Should I go, should I go out, yes,
Should I go, should I go out, yes,
Down into the valley,
Down into the wide valley.
Shall I pick, shall I pull off, yes,
Shall I pick, shall I pull off, yes,
A berry from the vine,
A grape from the vine.
This berry isn’t for me,
This grape isn’t for me,
I picked some flowers
And I wove a garland.
I shall throw myself,
I shall throw myself,
At my young fellow on his knees,
At my young fellow on his knees.
I sit with my young fellow,
I look at my young fellow,
Tell me, my soul, tell me, my light,
Do you love me or not?
Tell me, my soul, tell me, my light,
Do you love me or not?
“I’m not much for love,
But I can’t get enough of looking at you!”

Friends, welcome to our channel!
The Yale Russian Chorus is the oldest singing group in the New World dedicated to the music of Russia and nearby countries. The YRC was founded 1953 at the height of the Cold War. Founders: Denis Mickiewicz and George Litton.
Singers join while students at Yale, and many stay active throughout their lives. Every year or so we hold a major concert in which students and alumni sing together. Many alumni also join the students on tours to Russia.
Without a doubt, each of us had our own motivation to join the Russian choir. But we offer you a quote from one of the members of our choir, which unites us to some extent and explains a little the meaning of the choir in our lives: "Singing the music of the YRC in the style we sang it, was an antidote to the intellectualism that got many of us into Yale in the first place, but that could be so restrictive to the heart and spirit".
The singers are not Russians, or emigrants from Russia, but are students and former students who share a passion for the music and a belief in the power of music to build connections between people of different countries.
Thanks to KZitem, we are pleased to share these recordings with online audiences around the world who share our passion for this music.
