As a sixteen year old who has been playing for coming up to 6 years now, I was always told by my dad to after you deliver, keep your head down and palm up. It has helped me so much with consistency, and one thing i want to tell people that are just starting is to not stand straight up after your bowl was delivered because it messes with your weight. But thanks for the great video. Its good that you are posting to YT cause it gets more people into the sport.

First-year bowler here in New Zealand. Outdoor season due to start in September sometime. Been playing social fours in indoor rink and playing lead, your video's have really helped me and bowling so much better than when i first started . Now i will have to learn to bowl on grass 😮. Thought I would get back you as the bowl season is underway and I have played a few fours tournaments as lead in my first year. I was encouraged to play in the junior singles competition in our club. I was very nervous as I had never played a singles match and I won the title! It was a very hot day and i had to concentrate hard through the games and I was nearly done in by the end of it. Along with your videos, practice and some coaching I won my first title in my first year ❤. Thank you

My method is similar but different, I pick an aiming point dead level with the jack (along my line) to judge line and length. I find this helps with weight as I am just rolling a ball to that point to the left or right of the jack. I dont quite follow why you would pick the breaking point just in front of the jack over dead level. I will try this next practice session though after this video.

Hi Rob! There's never one perfect way to pick line and weight and i've heard hundreds of methods over my time playing. Typically the line and weight combo is a tough one for bowlers to master and we feel this is a great method to help understand it and get good at it. As with anything in sports it comes down to what's good for you and works for you as a player. What method will bring you the most success and as a coach i'd never change something that is working for you, only help when things weren't going as planned. Give it a try and see what you think!

Your question is exactly mine. It actually seems to make sense, to me, to aim for the length you want the bowl to go which what I’ve been doing. I’ll going to try aiming at the break point, it will be interesting to see how I get on. Have you tried ?? How did you get on.

Love the way you explain it, I've been bowling 2 years and been told all the get lower, step longer etc advice from well meaning bowlers. After watching this it makes sense to keep the delivery the same and work on line visualization and swing speed = weight control. Will be hitting the green this arvo to practice your drill, you've got me motivated to bowl more consistently 👍👍

Very good work. Visualisation however is not purely visual. A bowler must imagine the "feel" of the correct weight for a shot, then do what is necessary physically to convert the imagined weight in to reality. That takes individual practise.

Hi Daryl, tried the visualization on the weekend. Fast 16 green, artificial green. I found some improvement. May I ask , do you look at where the bowls starts to turn or say 1/2 way up the green at the apex of the arc? Also it's hard to pick a spot on the artificial green as it is quite uniform in color

I'm always looking for the apex of my bowls path. So where it breaks to start to return to centre. Using that I can start to train on the weight I need to get to that spot (long/mid/short). The spotting of your line gets tricky depending on where you play. That's why we really advise to look for something on/past the bank to start and then draw that line onto the green. Hopefully then you can use a rink marker, post, sign to give you a spot to start and work from. Trying to spot something on the green can get really hard, especially indoor where there are a lack of markings. If you are on a green that gets painted with lines for centres and boundaries, then that becomes a great deal easier.

Hi Michael. I think I know what you are asking, but it might just be a little over thinking of the path of the bowl. If we wanted to get specific the line you are mentally drawing to show the path of the bowl would likely be the width of the bowl itself and your bowl would need to roll along that path to get to the target. The apex is that point where the bowl starts to curl inwards towards the target. So you'd wat to focus your attention to the apex and that isn't really inside or outside the line, it's a point on the line itself. Hope that I understood your question. Thanks!

Hi D, Good video. Would suggest you deliver the bowl rather than throw it and to increase weight, bring the arm through quicker. Lachlan Tighe suggests 4 points of aim. 1. Bank 2 shoulder, where the bowl turns 3 10 metres in front of the mat and 4th 2-3 yards in front of the mat.. Love to the family. be in touch soon

Darryl - this is a very good video. You were able to describe some challenging concepts in a way that made sense. I started out using a bank spot as an aiming line - and then moving my eye back and forth from that to the actual target - as a way to integrate line and weight during delivery. I agree it would be easier to have a single fixed focus point, but often that is just a sea of green with nothing distinguishable to hold my gaze on. How do you 'lock-in' on a point without some sort of mark?

Hey Bill! Thanks for checking out the video. Even with the video explaining the concept and having a drill it is a tough process to figure out. Not everyone does it the same, but we felt this was one of the easier and more consistent ways to find line and work on understanding weight. I also wouldn't change someone who has a system that is working for them -- this isn't the be all, end all of the weight and line discussion. The lock-in part is your static target on the bank or beyond, then dragging that mark to the green. It comes down to your ability to really visualize the path of the bowl and to focus on a target. Being able to see the line from where you are to the static focal point (say the rink marker) is a good start, then you'll have to practice being able to bring that point down onto the green and reliably maintain that focus until you've delivered the bowl. Unless you have a pretty beat up green or are fortunate to have lots of centre/boundary lines drawn you won't have specific marks to go back to -- indoor would be impossible. It comes down to retaining your static target point, then drawing that to the green for every shot. Make adjustments as needed and remember those adjustments. Practice on this and especially working hard on visualization will make it easier.

Hi @nigelseviour4281 -- this really is a tough subject on any sport. How do you recover from a loss, especially a big or devastating loss to rally the next game or get back on track for a series of games. It's a big topic, but briefly it comes down to having and developing mental tools to deal with the negative feelings from a loss, getting to the learning part of what happened and how can you avoid that moving forward and finally focusing on the positive in your game and getting back to what makes you or your team successful. Some of the tools i'm referring to: Debrief - either solo or with the team -- what went well, what didn't and what are we going to do to improve for the next. (being honest, open and willing to take on criticism is key) Gameplan - do you have one? Is it followed? Is it flawed? -- game plans are the foundation that you can fall back to when things go off the rails. Routines - do you have routines to get yourself prepped for the game, after a game, between games? Sometimes it's quiet reflection and music, sometimes it's going for a walk -- whatever gives you time to reset and get pumped for the game coming up -- food, water, etc. all are part of it. Hope that helps a little bit and we hope to put some videos together for these topics on the future.

Hello from England coach. I have always been taught to look at the ground about a meter or so from your foot, along the line of aim. However, I would like to try your idea, just to see what happens, as my weight is a little hit and miss. So am I right in understanding that you're bowling to a fixed point along the line of aim, with just the right weight to cross where the bowl starts to pull in. Then allowing the bowls own weight to take it to the jack? The further away there jack, that line aim point will be nearer the jack?

Hi Richard, You've got the idea. The points can be any distance really, the demonstration had them basically mid distance on the green. Obviously the state of the green will dictate just how you place those reference points and bowl to them as not all greens run true and what bowl you use as some finish late, some have a level arc, etc. The distance from the mat to the point, then the point to the jack would be roughly 50/50 as a start point then adjust to get it right and work from there. It takes some time to get it right to your club/greens/region but once you lock it in, you'll really start to see the difference. All the best!

Typically we would instruct the player to choose their line/point of aim and then step onto the mat with their feet pointed in that direction. Make sure the whole body is lined up on that direction as well and then deliver. There are times when players will adjust if they feel they stepped to narrow or wide, but a player should also reset and do a full routine to make sure everything is ready to go if they aren't setup to play the line they want or need to change it.

Very good video. I'm adapting this to bocce which is much shorter. One question, why does you ball always break left? Is it the field or something you've done in the spin. I would hope it's the field. Also you talked about bias being one side of the ball or the other. Since I thought you wanted to only roll the ball in the direction of the line, there shouldn't be any rotation to one side or other of the ball. Thanks again!

Lawn Bowls are "biased" -- meaning they are not complete sphere's and are shaped so there are two sides to a bowl -- one is flatter and the other is more rounded. The idea is that as a bowl slows down it tilts to the rounded side and curls as a result towards that side. So you can roll to curl left or curl right. In my examples the camera is typically on one side so you always see me roll my right side with it curling left. You really do nothing to influence the turn, you roll straight towards an intended target and allow the bowl to curl naturally and while a natural grass surface does play a part (uneven grass, lumpiness, etc.) on a true flat surface the bowl does all the work.

I find that the longer the jack, the wider the line of delivery needs to be to get the bowl to stop at center. Is this right or wrong?

@robertTrautwein not wrong as your bowl does need more width in line the farther down the green you go, but the degree to how it happens does depends on a number of things - the surface you are playing on and all the other environmental factors happening. A fast and true surface you will note that a minor change in line will make a significant difference in where it finally lands (ex. adjust an few in release point and it's couple feet on the final draw line). Some surfaces will have major differences due to the inconsistency of the surface short to medium to long (ex. lush green grass to burnt out patch to perfectly manicured grass).

Hi Darryl, Another great informative video. I’m based in the UK and a bowler of many years experience at a decent level. However I have one single bugbear that I can never seem to crack and maybe you could offer a suggestion or two. I can never seem to deliver the bowl flush to the ground despite tinkering with all aspects of my delivery. I don’t dump the bowl from a great height, usually just a few inches but that can make a big difference for n a soft green. Obviously this makes it difficult to effortlessly reach long jacks outdoors, particularly in the wet. I find that it’s much less of an issue indoors where reaching the head is seldom a problem. I am fit and supple so there are no physical limitations which might stop me achieving a flush to the ground delivery but try as I may I just can’t seem to manage it. I’d be more than grateful for any suggestions you might have to help me fix this problem.Many thanks, David

David, thanks for checking out the videos! Your situation is more common than most people realize. There is a fine line between delivering clean smooth bowl down the rink and having a slight drop or bumping it into the ground. Even the best bowlers in the world struggle at times with it. Hard greens and indoor you've noted you don't have an issue which makes sense as the surface is tough enough to resist the small drop and you won't bounce or dig into the surface as you would on a soft green. The best advice I have is to do some video from different angles of your delivery and take a look at it to see what's happening. Are you jumping up a little too early? Are you completing your release and follow-through smoothly? Can you do some work on smoothing out your motion and getting just a bit lower? I would tend to think it's more a mental hurdle that you don't want to drive the bowl into the ground as you note you have no issues getting down and low which it typically the culprit. If you review your delivery try to get a third party (hopefully a coach or someone who works on deliveries) and have them help go over the mechanics and see what's happening. Hope this helps!

The problem really hit me this morning when I returned to outdoor bowls after a one year lay-off. My playing partner who delivers as flush to the green as anyone I’ve ever seen was effortlessly reaching full length jacks with little apparent effort while I was conscious of almost hurling the bowl up just to reach, with the inevitable compromise to my delivery and line control. As I looked around the green at other good bowlers I saw the same thing, deliveries with little apparent force being applied easily reaching full length jacks. I’m determined to fix this with the help of your advice, so thanks again.

It does pay to have a clean and smooth delivery. The less drop/loft/wobble you get out of your bowl the easier it will be to reach longer jacks, especially in less than ideal conditions. Good luck and let us know how you make out!`

If all things remained the same, then technically the line would narrow the shorter the distance being played. Generally the change wouldn't be drastic only small changes. You always need to take into account the green, wind, etc which will also play a a part.

@robertTrautwein When you first lay them down it's a "educated guess" based on green, speeds and your bowls. We always suggest doing this during your warm up as you'll get an idea of how the green is running. You make adjustments on the first couple runs to line them up properly and for the shot you are trying to understand/visualize. Not perfect, but if you do this while warming up you should be all set once you are ready to train.

Hi John -- This will come down to some work and practice on your delivery. Because you have two issues you are dealing with and you are worrying about making some changes it may be a bit harder. First item is to get yourself looking up and not worry about the twist of the hand. Start getting comfortable with looking down the rink more and extending your follow through to get a good feel for that position. Once you feel comfortable there, then start working on the line and removing the twist in your arm either pre release or in your follow through. Likely your delivery and results will get worse for a while until you get comfortable with the changes. Don't worry if you struggle a bit, changes always have that effect. What you want is to get your delivery to a place where it's solid, repeatable and comfortable for you. It takes time and some work out on the greens trying things and getting reps in. Hopefully that helps.

That's an excellent question. Generally it comes down to managing your focus and concentration to specific times during each end (delivery of jack or bowl, calling shots) as well as allowing yourself to relax and think of something else (like briefly between bowls, between ends, taking a water break). Plus work on breathing techniques to help manage your stress levels. Trying to intensely focus for long periods of time like a full end or game is just a recipe for burnout and you can't maintain that.
