My husband had a poison ivy rash so bad he had to take a round of prednisone twice. His eyes were swollen shut. The blisters on his fingers were leaking so badly his fingers were sticking together. It was all over his body. And it kept coming back year after year. It was just horrible.

My friend bought a house with a massive back yard in the town but the backyard was overgrown and not even walkable for her dog and kids. Her sister tried clearing it within 2 hrs she was covered head to toe in poison ivy. They asked me if I wanted to do it. I spent 4 days 10 hrs a day in that back yard no gloves shorts and a tank top and never once even itched from it. They were shocked... The back yard was virtually nothing but that crap... But my brother if he's down wind from it his whole body is selling up... I'm almost 40 and never has it ever done anything to me... Idk I find it interesting how so many people have so many different reactions or lack there of from it.... And side note I feel like you brought back a memory... The relatives were burning brush, and my parents didn't think a thing about it. Within 4 hours me and my brother were itching everywhere. Parents, nothing not even a 😮 slight itch. We both went to the hospital but back then you bought calamine lotion. That's exactly what my parents bought for us. Children scratch and scratch my face my mouth looked like it had melted, and with open sores all over my face and neck. Plus my arms and everywhere else that I had touched. It took 3 months to heal. The scaring went away after about 8 years. It was so awful looking that way, that during those years of my life depression set in. If you're allergic to poison ivy, it's way worse.

For those of you wondering, Jewelweed is native to the northern and eastern parts of North America. The Europe/Asia equivalent is called soapwort or soapberry. The chemicals in question (saponins) act as a surfactant, freeing the urushiol. Jewelweed is also an antifungal, fantastic for athlete's foot if you're ever out on an itchy hike. Tannic acid is another old-school topical poison ivy remedy. You can make it by boiling a bunch of red oak acorns and then siphoning the stew into a bottle which you can keep for emergencies.

Carry rubbing alcohol with you!! I am TERRIBLY allergic to poison oak/ivy. Rubbing alcohol neutralizes the oil too. I started carrying rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and ill spray me down after contact or precaution and it works great!!

One thing this city dweller didn’t know was that poison ivy can get grow pretty tall (hence its name, although it isn’t a true ivy). I’d only ever seen poison ivy that had been mowed down repeatedly by walking trails in parks and woods, so I thought it could only grow 6-12 inches tall. But then one day I saw beautiful black raspberries and decided to pick some, not realizing I was wading through a literal field of waist-high poison ivy. I has such a horrible reaction I had to be hospitalized. I was on corticosteroids for weeks. It all went away but stopping the corticosteroids to quickly caused me to gets hives, so I had to start taking them again and taper off very gradually. Not a good summer. Moral of the story : never leave your house. Jk. But be careful!!!

Would it kill the Dollar General putting a store in Bum fux Egypt? I mean we have 3 types of those stores a half mile from each other. 🥴helicopter could drop off the workers on a ladder dragging under the chopper and drop skids of inventory from planes with chutes. 😆 I wanna speak to the manager!! Well he gets dropped off in 45 minutes from up above. Shoppers please mind the wildlife when leaving. Man-Bear Pig has been spotted again.

I dig out poison ivy every year. I wear shorts, short sleeves and no gloves. In an 4 hour digging session I barely get any spots. Tip 1. Don’t roll in it. lol. 2. If you notice you have been touched by the leaves, immediately wash with cold water and dish soap. Scub area with paper towels. 3 move slowly and methodically when removing the vine. You have to dig to get rid of it. Dig a lot. You won’t be 100% successful in one year.

In the 1970s my late husband and I were hiking 🥾 and climbing 🧗🏻 lots. He taught this to me. It’s interesting that there’s almost always a patch of jewel weed very near patched of poison.

Knowing me, I'd brush up against Jewel weed, panic thinking it was poison ivy, and start grabbing at what I would *think* is Jewel weed, and rub it all over my entire body.... ....only to realize I confused the two 🤦

You should always carry some Technu wipes and Sudecon wipes with you. The 1st helps remove the offending oils, and the 2nd helps soothe the burning.

Does jewel leaf grow in proximity to poison Ivy. I have never run across poison Ivy, nor have my children. Which is surprising since when young and not careful cause we didn’t even know what it looked like. Can one have a natural immunity to it? Also what about poison oak. Don’t know what it looks like either. Have you a reaction to that also? Thanks for the Ivy lesson. Hope I never get it cause I’ve already forgot what the remedy looks like.

GoJo or mechanic's degreaser immediately on suspected areas and surrounding areas. Let soak 30 seconds, wash off. Wipe off with towels. May need to repeat. Remove the poison oils, you're golden.

And why do you think jewelweed will be readily available? Most people can identify poison ivy but wont be able to identify jewelweed if they're inexperienced. A dermatologist would say the best thing to do is shower thoroughly as soon as you get home with Dawn dishwashing liquid, as soon as you can. This is a serious skin condition. Dawn cuts grease and oil, and urishiol is oily. Dawn is more consistent and reliable. There's a time and place for naturopathy, I was licensed in natural therapeutics, but I don't think this is one of those times. You need to remove it from your skin by washing it off thoroughly, not rub and spread it around with plant juice. And people can't find jewelweed in some areas of our country, where Rhus Tox can grow. Jewelweed prefers rich acid soil, like they have in eastern states. But Rhus can grow in poorer, more alkaline soils.

Old Timer recommendations which have worked for me and for my children through the years: A COLD bleach and water bath before rash starts works great. (Do not use even warm water as that will open the skin's pores and allow poison oak/ivy oils in.) After rash begins, baking soda baths every hour sooths itching and heals up blisters (leave water in bath tub, sink, or a container to make quick bathing easier. Or make a thinker paste of baking soda and water to apply as a poltice repeatedly through out the day.

I've found myself standing in, kneeling in, and otherwise touching poison ivy by accident maybe a half dozen times and have yet to receive any kind of rash. I'm also not allergic to mosquitos, and for the longest time I just thought mosquitoes didn't bite me. Meanwhile, my body can't tolerate dairy, gluten, or nuts.

One time when I was around 7-10 years old, I got poison ivy on my legs. It ended up spreading farther and farther until it covered my entire body (including private parts). The pain and itching was unbearable and I had to go to the hospital to get some creams and pills for it! Haven’t had it since though

I remember as a kid & young adult going on nature hikes & expeditions through the woodlands, the others would have breakouts, welts, skin rashes, their legs, hands & eyes swollen. I on the other hand was always fine, I would say... Didn't we all just hike the same trail? I'm glad I wasn't susceptible because I love being in nature.

I have never heard of “jewel weed” but I will look for it now. When I get poison ivy I mix bleach and water 3:1, it takes the itching away and seems to get rid of the rash pretty quickly.
