God I miss the 90's. Pokemania back then is something that I couldn't explain adequately to someone who wasn't there. When you say it was everywhere, it really was. Pokemon was such a phenomenon that it was kinda ridiculous, and I loved every moment of it as a kid. I feel like it could still be that big, but they have made some serious missteps and haven't evolved the formula (no pun intended) enough to keep the fanbase growing like it did initially.

@@brandonslone8937 don’t get me wrong, Pokémon as a franchise is still very strong. But as with anything, when you repeat the same thing over and over and don’t really change it, it becomes stale and less interesting. The games I think have taken a dive in quality since Gen 5 in general. They could do so much more with everything but they want to stay safe and predictable. @@Dante02d12 I didn’t say things didn’t change, but the games all basically flow the same way and there’s no real surprises in them. They’re also technically inferior to other RPG titles and it seems to be getting more and more noticeable since they left the DS/3DS and went to the switch. I mean look at the consensus of reviews on scarlet/violet so far. The games are adequate but not great, and it’s obvious that they aren’t polishing what they make due to their rush to put one out every 2 years.

I miss the hype from the 90’s too. Born in ‘91 and all I wanted to do was play red & silver, and open packs. I didn’t get to rip packs much, but the cards meant everything to me (probably because I had very few) 2020 brought that feeling of hype and obsession with the cards back. So I became a vintage collector/seller and have built a collection that means a TON to me, and the 9 year old version of me. It may be a while until that hype re-visits us, but it’s certainly always in our hearts. May Pokémon live forever 🙏🏼.

I'm 26 and was born in '96, so I feel like I'm a mix between a millennial and a gen Zer. I was only a baby during pokemania, so I sadly didn't get to experience those "Mew under the truck" playground rumors, trading and battling with friends at school, etc., although I do still have some vague memories during those times like the toys and merch I used to have, thanks to my brother, who actually experienced pokemania. Also I used to watch my brother play Pokemon Blue on our old CRT tv (it was through the GB Tower in Pokemon Stadium which lets you play Pokemon Red & Blue on the tv), and I also remember him having a binder that held all his Pokemon cards that he'd show his friends, though he sadly got rid of it years ago. Oh man, we used to have so many pokemon toys and plushies, and we'd watch some of the old VHS tapes of the original series on our old CRT. So in a way, I guess I DID experience pokemania somewhat despite not being a full-on millennial, thanks to my brother. Also, sorry if this comment is so poorly worded, I just get extremely passionate about sharing my memories of pokemon and other stuff, like I REALLY wanna share this stuff, but some of my experiences are really hard to put into words at times, so I end up not being able to form clear coherent sentences in the process, lol.

I'd argue gen 1's story is actually one of the better stories. You have your evil team and the gym leaders true. You can blast by without any narrative or context. However, if you go out of your way and explore, you find vague information on the legendary Pokemon and where you can find them. For example, some npcs briefly mention a bird in the mountains, you look through the binoculars and you can see a mysterious bird. If you go to seafoam islands, you'll be rewarded with a chance to catch Articuno. Catching it will give you its background info, completing that story. Then there's the diary entries talking about Mewtwo. There's no prof or gym leader shovel feeding you the backstory. You're reading it from a kids perspective, so you're left to wonder until you make it to the cave and find Mewtwo. The story elements are different than modern games, but they're tied to exploration and discovering. That's what the first gen was al about. The stories are a lot more grand now I guess, but there's no room for exploration as each town has a cutscene unravelling the backstory of the legendary Pokemon on the box.

It was intentional to not add a backlight to the game boy and gbc. The game gear needed 6 AA batteries and only gave 3-4 hours of battery life. The GB needed 4 and gave 30 hours, and the GBC needed 2 and gave 10 hours. It was economical and made parents much more attracted to it. Great vid!

I searched hard for another game I was interested, and when I saw Pokemon Red and Blue, I hesitated. I wasn't sure if I wanted a game I never heard of, but my instincts were telling me to get Pokemon. So I got Pokemon Blue because I loved Blastoise's design. But I ended up starting out with Charmander, ironically. As someone who got into Pokémon during the gen 1 phase rather late, around winter/spring 2000, it really was like being immersed in a steaming cultural bath. I can’t adequately recall a moment in-between; one day there’s no pokestuff around but the next there’s loads of it, and this coming from someone who used to frequent video game stores quite a bit. Great video! I went back to these days, even though I'm from Latam, we lived almost the same fever over here, thanks to the anime, and the first time I saw Pokémon Gold, I was in love and it fulfilled all my expectations as someone who wanted to know how would it be like to be in a Pokémon world!

Pokémania was so, SO much bigger than just what the video shows but like you said, you were born a few years after it got big. Either way, this video is still a great intro to how this series blew up back in the day (which is a phrase I say one hundred percent unironically).

When I was young, I thought Pokémon was the only show to have the anime art style, so I assumed every anime was either Pokémon or a rip off of it.

My toddler old loves pokemon and pikachu is her favorite of coarse. I never thought that almost 30 years after I was a pokefan I'd have a kid week is too.

Yellow version was the funnest for me, it is exactly the anime in a video game. The primitive technology and underwhelming graphics made jt that much better.Crystal is my all time favorite though

If I have to say what are two of the biggest franchises to come out of the 90s Power Rangers and Pokemon everywhere you went back in the day you couldn't go anywhere without seeing Pokémon or Power Rangers that's how huge both franchises were in the 90s and honestly I feel like that's something we'll never see again because it was a phenomenon that can never be reduplicated I'm glad that I grew up in the 90s I feel bad for this current generation don't ever get to experience what we had growing up I'm still a huge fan of Power Rangers right to this day but Pokemon at one point I used to be very into it but I fell out of it once Yu-Gi-Oh came out that was when I got into Yu-Gi-Oh but I hope you do a video on the 1990s craze of Power Rangers and how much of an impact it left behind this was an excellent video on Pokémon media in the late 1990s it took me back to my childhood thank you so much for this video

I do plan on a power rangers video! It’ll be a bit tho since I’m still doing a Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon one before it.

Growing up in that time it was huge! People think its big now but back then it was literally every where. Having mom take me to 7/11 to 7/11 just to find packs of cards only to be told “sold out”. Huge signs that said no pokemon, dont ask, ect ect. After all this time though I still have all my original toys and collectibles. Card sets and games you name it. Pokemon was just a way of life for kids in the late 90s early 2000s

@@tvstellar I think I have all pieces in the set, I was given the set a few years ago. Unfortunately I did buy it back when pokemania was at its peak as I was not born at the time but I wish I was, would have been so cool to experience Pokémon at the height of it's popularity.

Man I remember people thinking that this was "Demonic" because of how successful it was back then and all I could think is "y'all clearly haven't heard of anime" though MOST PEOPLE back then didn't even know that anime existed so I'll give em a break 😂
