I find this version better, as it goes with the city's theme, and the Japanese traditional music is what defines Japan (Pokemon being a Japanese game). Plus, Ecruteak is modeled after Kyoto, the ancient Japanese capital.

In-story Malie city was founded by immigrants from Johto if I remember correctly, so that's not entirely possible(Konikoni as well I believe). This keeps in with Hawai having some japanese population. So, in all ways possible, Johto still beats it out in being traditional, only the hardware the region was designed for was more modest, so yeah, it's going to be less grandiose.

If pokemon were real, I'd live here. 1. A town's walk away from Goldenrod. Convenient for dept store, magnet train (if I had no fly =)), and the GTS. 2. Historical landmarks such as the tin (bell) tower, the burnt tower. 3. Imagine having Morty over for dinner a couple of times a week. That'd be awesome, just sitting there talking like old friends. 4. The dance studio and their lovely yet disciplined dancers and eeveelutions. 5. A route away from the farm/country. 6. The music.

@bjizzle44 This is mostly due to Johto being based on the Kansai region of Japan in real life. Kansai tends to be regarded as the cultural and historical center of all of Japan, with many ancient buildings and sites. Ecruteak City in particular is based on Kyoto, hence the two towers. Kanto, by comparison, is based on the irl Kanto region of Japan, where Tokyo is located. It tends to be much more modern. (Disregard all of the above if I'm just repeating crap you already know. :P )

@mjalal100 No. The nostalgia might tug at your heart, and obviously it's still an amazing song in bleepy-bloop form, but the fact remains that this version of the song is more emotional if you take out that the original is just that way because of all the good memories attached to it. I find nothing wrong with liking the original because of nostalgia, and honestly it is a really heartwarming/sweet feeling to remember that kind of stuff through music, but that shouldn't cloud one's judement.
@TackyRackyComixNEO

The original seemed to have a much more somber, solemn feel to it (which seemed to fit better, considering the history behind the town). This actually kind of reminds me of the music they have in port cities in the games. I still like this version, though. It just seems like a mood whiplash when the two are placed side-by-side.
