Legend says that a Hungarian princess promised to the Polish king threw a ring into a salt mine in Hungary. On the way to Krakow she made a stop in Wieliczka. The service awakened her, scared by a rumble from below the ground. He kept telling about how we can safely lick the walls to test if it was really salt, while also reminding us that the salt mines are visited by thousands of visitors, who probably may have done the exact same thing as we were going to (licking the salt). I licked it a bit. It was indeed salt. 10/10 Would go again.

I got here by accident and I don't regret it. I am 36 years old, I am from Poland and I have not been to Wieliczka yet. Even more so, coming back from the mountains, I could visit this place more than once. You inspired me with this unique place. I greet you and your country.

To anyone who is going to visit Wieliczka, don't miss the place right next to the mine, don't know what it is called in English, but it looks like a wooden castle. It's timber scaffolding, packed thickly with stacks of twigs, with brine running continuously down the entire structure. It's for inhalation, the salt spray is supposed to be good for respiratory problems. They made it look like a castle just for effect and it does look amazing, so organic, with water spray and rainbows and sun glistening off of the wet branches, you can sit in the courtyard, you can walk up on the walls, there is a great view, it's brilliant for relaxing after the visit to the mine, which can be a bit hectic because they have to keep people moving. Don't miss it, it really is beautiful and meditative.

@@nosuchthingasshould4175 thorn tower or graduation tower: a structure that consists of a wooden wall-like frame stuffed with bundles of brushwood, used in the production of salt which removes water from a saline solution by evaporation, increasing its concentration of mineral salts.

Wieliczka is my home town. When I was a small child my older sister would scare me and say the mine would one day collapse and bring down the whole town.

OMG. I remember I was in Wieliczka in primary school so... more or less than 20 years ago and it’s so amazing that it’s still there yet it’s just 20 years. Mind blowing, when you realize that’s just not even whole 3% (if I’m counting this correctly) of its age... Yet, it’s almost whole my life... I think that I should visit this place again... Hopefully I won’t lose directions next time xD

Pitty you didn't visit the oldest salt mine in Poland in Bochnia. It's the oldest and deeper salt mine in Europe. It's about 35 km from Wieliczka, so it isnt's so far. You visited Krakow and Tarnow, and Bochnia is in the middle of the track between the two cities. I regret nobody told you about the oldest salt mine in Poland which is amazing. It's older and it's deeper into the ground. It's the only place in the world where you can go by train through the underground chapel. You can also have a ride in an underneath boat. You can slide on the longest slide slope under the ground or play basketball match under the ground. Eventually you can spend a night under the ground to recover and make the picture clear!
