Polar Express New Piggyback Railcars Unboxing Review Test Run
I just received two new additions to Lionel's Polar Express product line. In this video, I'm unboxing and reviewing these new railcars. In addition, I'll connect them to my Polar Express Freight Train, pulled by a Pere Marquette LionChief Plus 2.0 Berkshire Steam Locomotive. The Pere Marquette was the inspiration for the steam locomotive in the Polar Express motion picture.
The bottom line for my review: These two railcars exceeded my expectations. The details included on these cars and the semi trailers that are piggybacked on them are excellent. Even the tires on the trailers have visible treads in a realistic pattern.
The flatbed railcars have realistic wood slat patterns on their decks, along with other realistic details. They look great running on my O-gauge Polar Express Model Railroad. The test run includes circling my elevated track, then proceeding down the grade to the lower level. After connecting to the rest of the Polar Express Freight Train waiting on Track Number Two, the train is pulled through the paired switches connecting Track Two with Track One.
These new Piggyback Railcars are described by Lionel as 50-foot flat cars. O-scale is 1:48, which means that one-quarter inch equals one foot. So a fifty foot trailer should be 12.5 inches long. the actual measured length of these flatcars is 13.5 inches, excluding the couplers, which would equal 54 feet in O-scale.
The minimum curve radius provided by Lionel for these cars is O-36. My new cars had no problem handling the O-36 switches that connect my tracks together. I tested the radius both running forward and in reverse, with equally good results.
