Servicing a 28-year-old Polaris 400l 4x4. Crank seals are important part in how a 2 stroke engine works, replacing them could solve some idle and overheating issues.
This was a great video! I’m saving it and sending it to my friend because he’s doing this on his 400.

I think my Polaris scrambler 400 has the same problem and I was about to start working on it. But do you know around how long it took you to do this?

I think it was about 2 or 3 hours. I was messing with the cameras and stuff, so it took me a little longer than that. Scraping all the gasket surfaces took some time. Make sure you align the marks on the gears.

For the counter balance you need to put oil in the place you show un the video or the oil Is the same that Is infront

2 cycle oil goes in the front for the engine to burn. motor oil goes in the dipstick hole under the carburetor.

So the balancer shaft was that a bad bearing on the back of that and the newly waited replace that was put the whole new balancing shaft assembly with. The bearing on it or did you somehow replace just the bearing? You didn't show that part no this is curious

I replaced the balancer shaft assembly. You would need to press the gear off of the shaft to replace just the bearing and then re align the marks be for pressing back together.

Im looking at buying a 99 Sport 400 L 2wd. Its in very good phsyical condtion but i have 2 concerns: 1. The engine rattles/taps at idle. Every video of a Polaris 400 idling on youtube appears to have the same noise. Sounds like a woodpecker at idle. Is this just how the 400s sound? 2. It sputter a bit and is weak right off idle but after maybe 7-8 mph it has loads of power. Im at 6000' elevation so im thinking maybe it just needs a smaller main jet and a hgher rpm clutch spring for the elevation. I appreciate any help/direction you can give me and awesome video! If i buy a 400 i will need to do the water pump seal job sooner or later so i will use this.

Yeah, everyone I have been on rattles a bit. And because of 2 cycle performance they are a bit sluggish off the line but re jetting may be needed for your altitude. Inspecting the reeds is a good idea as they have a big impact on performance. The book will recommend springs and settings for your elevation. The biggest issues are with the transmission, if the that works well then it sounds like it's worth putting some money into.

@@MrFixit1 A bit sluggish would be fine, this thing currently wouldn't even come close to spinning the tire on gravel. It kinda surges a bit like it's struggling and just slowly rolls away. Probly a jetting issue and clutch spring I bet. Trans works great though, engine idles low and smooth, plenty of power once it gets into the powerband.

other than the transmission fluid, is the counter-balance fluid the only fill point for the engine? removed 3 drain bolts under the engine, and was confused with only 1 fill plug/dip stick! Didn't know if there's a crankcase fill plug like on our 1991 cr125. Were replacing fluids today and thought i'd ask. thank you
@MrFixit1

Yes, 3 drains. One for the Balance shaft oil, one for the crank case (in case the engine was flooded or submerged) and one for the pull start cover (again in case the engine was submerged. So yes, the only oil for the engine is the 100cc's or so 10w 30 for the balance shaft. The middle plug is the Balance shaft oil drain. The plug on the far left of the machine is the crank case drain (should be empty) and the far right plug is the pull cover drain (should be empty) Hope this clears up the confusion.
