In a historic moment for space travel, the Polaris Dawn crew, made of entirely civilian astronauts, conducted the first-ever private spacewalk on Thursday morning.
Previously a high-risk endeavor reserved for professional astronauts, the Polaris Dawn crew opened their capsule's hatch around 6 a.m. EST and tested the new extravehicular activity spacesuits designed by SpaceX.
Jared Isaacman, the mission commander and tech billionaire spearheading Polaris' partnership with SpaceX, was the first to take on this daring spacewalk hundreds of miles above Earth.
“Back at home, we all have a lot of work to do. But from here, it sure looks like a perfect world," Isaacman said, the Earth beaming behind him.
