I’ve only rebuilt one primary clutch ever at my dads shop last winter for a guy’s race sled. We never used a lathe we just had screw drives and sockets to pound out and in new bushings and we used scotch bright to clean up all the surfaces. Clutch turned out great! I have a “clean” junker sled I bought last winter and the clutch has 6k miles on it and it makes noises I’ve been back and forth on rebuilding it but I might just find a used one or a new one.

I agree 1000% that it's easier to look for a better primary than to pull one apart. I've seen fixtures that have been bolted to the floor and people are using 5' cheater bars to get the spider off.

Right on. I've broken spiders too. Sometimes they just can't be saved, no matter how big of a cheater bar you have :)

Should you rebuild clutches is the question. I deal with Comet clutches, but the basic design is similar. If you buy all the new parts over the counter, when you add it up, you may not be saving much. If you have acquired NOS parts considerably cheaper than the current prices, it can make sense to rebuild. I have had clutches that were too far gone to rebuild, if the fixed sheave and shaft is worn there is no way to bring things back to new specs. I have bought clutches off ebay that turned out to be very lightly used, and with a clean up and installation of application correct arms and spring, worked very well. I know guys who are willing to work on anything on a sled, but only buy new clutches, so it definitely can be a personal preference.

Hey Nutter! I am working on a 71 Charger and want to swap the steel clutch with aluminum…what other Polaris models have the same taper on an aluminum clutch? I assume I need a different secondary too…from the same donor machine, right?

f you sled take a 1 3/8" wide bet you probably just need a deep bore primary clutch. A modern 32mm Polaris clutch should work or call Wahl Brothers. Probably leave the secondary alone if it takes 1 3/8" belt. I don't do much with these early 70s Polaris sleds, but if it has a Fuji engine it should be the deep bore clutch.

@@nuttersspeedshop thanks, it is a Fuji 294 twin. (it’s so small it’s awesome lol). It was maybe the last year of having points ignition. I’ll check on the belt width. Thanks again…appreciate your channel !

I'm just guessing because the hood had been changed so the speedo was probably not giving correct mileage on that sled. Probably 5000 miles + of pure neglect.

i have same clutch,and i rebuilt itwith , all new rebuild parts. and bought the new movable sheave bushing, With steel retaining ring. that fiber bushing went in with a little effort. ( prior cleaned with emery , etc. and cleaner) but when i tried to install spider on the fixed sheave , it will no way slide down on the fixed shaft, two men and a boy to try to get it to slide. is it a tapered bushing? no where do i see it only goes one way. i already wrecked the first bushing with chain saw file trying to get it to slide gracefully. what the ? any info is appreciated

also, the belt surface is very clean and shiney no rust did emery cloth that too.

You did the thing I would have suggested in polishing the stem. As you discovered you can't open up the clearance or it wrecks the bushing. Make sure there's a tiny chamfer on the lead in on the stem and push it on and work it around and spin it and try to seat the bushing. If it won't loosen up I don't know what to say except polish some more and then try to push it on and work it in. They are always tight at first, but I have always been able to get them to move free by polishing and working them in.

@@nuttersspeedshop i did forget to say i did polish the shaft with emery prior to placing the spider. and yes, the tiny chamfer is there and everything looks good. thanks Man , for your input. the first one , i filed bushing w/chain saw file, ruined it. cant even push it on.
