Polarity Coaching: How can a coach be both Supportive AND Challenging?; Self Assured AND Humble?; See themselves as a resource AND see the coachee as a resource? This is the first place where polarity thinking is useful for the coach. Within the list of coaching core competencies of the ICF are a series of implicit polarities. Making them explicit and developing the ability to intentionally leverage them would be a significant contribution to the individual coach and to the coaching profession. The second place where polarity thinking can be useful is helping the coachee distinguish, within their most important concerns, which are problems they can solve and which are polarities that are inherently unsolvable. The third place where polarity thinking is useful for the coach is in helping the coachee leverage the inherent tension between the two poles of the individual and organizational polarities most important to them. The results are that the coachee (and the coachee's organization) can move toward their preferred future faster and with greater sustainability.
