I thought the neighborhood seemed dangerous but it didn’t seem that way when i walked in their sandwich shop for the first time. My parents were so loved there. Whenever a seldom situation arises when a customer gave them a difficult time, other customers would step in and squash any and all disputes. They were there for 10 years. She asked to sweep the floors or somehow earn enough to buy food, because she didnt want to steal, despite being desperate. We (the employees and myself) each chipped in a few bucks, and we made sure she had enough food for her and her kids. When I was in college, I worked at a local cafe chain and we constantly threw out food every single night. It was so much food. I would package as much as I can and there would always be a few homeless people outside so I would feed them. I almost got fired because some homeless people would be waiting outside the patio on my closing nights and would “scare the customers” even though they weren’t doing anything, literally just sit there patiently . My GM also tried to push a policy to stop giving away food and my coworkers had to cover for me a few times, even though the food was going to waste. While working as a server for a few years, it blew my mind how most restaurants have a “throw it out” policy instead of just giving the food to people who can’t afford to eat.

Yes, you don't want swarms of homeless people around your business. Period. End of story. This isn't a conversation. They're often not homeless people, they're usually drug addicts and mentally ill unstable people that lash out. I used to be naive too. I used to actually do similar things. Until one of those junkie scumbags tried to stab me and then when we called the police he said my boss tried to pull a gun on him. We used to let the homeless people stay around outside and panhandle, until they started getting aggressive with customers. Then when we had to lay down the law, I almost got stabbed. They'll act real friendly when you're giving them something-- but that changes very fast bud. And they have a throw out policy because they don't want to face lawsuits from someone eating food that was left out at room temperature for too long and then they get sick and sue the business and then all of a sudden you lose your job because your employer goes under. And let me guess, none of them had physical disabilities that actually prevented them from getting a job and taking care of themselves? Right? RIGHT?!

On a separate note prior to working for this big grocery chain when things were going MUCH better in my life I did one of my warmest deeds I can recall. I was a 911 dispatcher for 24 years, and happened to stop in for a prescription Christmas Eve. A gentleman in his mid eighties was in line ahead of me who was clearly very sick went to pick up an array of medications. Once he was told the price he said put them back, he didn’t have enough money. Tears were rolling down his cheeks. I was next, and I told the pharmacy staff to ring his medications with mine. Back then I was able to afford to do things like that, not anymore. The man was so incredibly grateful, he gave me a hug, and asked for my name / address. I told him to go home, and get better, that nobody should be sick on Christmas Eve. I was on my way to my Moms house for our annual Christmas Eve party, where in 1968 a tiny red stocking was hung on a mantle to announce my pending arrival in August 1969. I still have that stocking…

Which is why food and shelter need to be a right not a luxury. All humans should be granted access to those regardless of circumstances. Homeless shelters and food banks are a good start but its not enough. We need a universal basic income. A set amount of money every person gets that's calculated to cover food and shelter. It can go on a food card and be a housing voucher if you want. But there should be no application process for the benefits, being human qualifies you for them and there should be laws forcing every rental to accept the government funds and regulating housing prices.

When I first moved out of home. I really had no money and was struggling to get a job. I was in my local supermarket and had picked up all of the cheapest stuff i could find. Just rice and veg mostly because meat was more than i could afford at the time. When i got to the till, it came to €34. Unfortunately, a bill had come out of my account unbeknownst to me, and my card declined. I panicked and apologised and was about to leave when an older woman behind me grabbed me and smiling she said "its alright, I'll get it for you." She even gave me a massive ham that she was buying. I had ham for a week from it. Later that month, I found a job, and things got a lot better. I never forgot her kindness.

We watched him frantically run out into the street with those groceries in his hand and he looked so desperate. The owners caught up to him and beat him to a pulp while dropping and breaking all the eggs and the poor dude limped away. That's when cops are TRULY helping to better society. Stealing may be by principle wrong, but if you steal out of hunger I personally don't blame you, especially if you tried all other options first, like local donation based organisations or such. In many big cities there are also storage containers and places that work with supermarkets, that donate the food, which is still good but they have to throw out due to health related laws. I mean even Batman in Batman Begins stole food.

Many years ago, my (then to be future) wife and I were doing a loss prevention detail in Temple City for a large Grocery store chain. Most of the time, the arrests were what you'd expect: alcohol, tobacco, etc... One time, however, we caught a woman stealing bread and peanut butter. During questioning, it became clear that she was stealing to eat... We did kick her out, but we did not arrest her. Oh, and she left legally with the bread, peanut butter, jelly, milk, and a few more essentials to help her, as we had bought it (the manager even quietly slipped in some money).

When I worked as security in a retail store we never saw anyone steal produce, water, or bread, some kids would steal candy and a homeless dude would steal candy and some energy drinks. But yeah the whole “stealing bread to feed your kids” thing is very very very uncommon, we constantly communicated with all of the retail chains in our city and our other chains within the state and no one ever posted about things like that, also I worked just outside of Detroit so wasn’t like I worked in some high income area.

Officers who show empathy are almost nonexistent. Stealing is still wrong, no matter what the circumstances, but when a seasoned, professional officer is more interested in saving the person than making jail the only alternative,then I say, thank you for your humanness ...you probably in some means, or ways saved their lives in the long run.

I don’t think people understand the gravity of situations and how extreme conditions can effect one’s own actions to point of stealing, people are people at the end of the day, and the basic necessities are an entitled essential, please operate with grace and kindness towards people, God bless.

I mean….. same could be said about the guy, seems like he is barely chugging along and is barely financially hanging on if all those violation existed. So you have someone that is barely able to stay afloat wanting the cops to stop people stealing their stuff and someone who stole when in most areas they give you free food if you can get there. One probably has difficulty getting there and the other has difficulty keeping his business running. The bat instead of having a gun also isn’t something wealthy gas station owners would have. Also doesn’t matter if it’s 1.50 per person stealing, that quickly can add up to thousands. Also she’s likely to need to steal again if her situation stays the same so yeah didn’t solve anything
@Geekabibble

@@socketyellow3 He could also just be cheap and not want to invest in fixing stuff. We don't really know. What we do know is that he didn't have empathy at all and wanted her arrested over $1.50 bread, even after knowing she was left in a crap situation and just wanted to feed her child. He didn't have to give her the bread, but he could have had a bit of grace and have the police let her go. Instead he called her a crackhead for no reason(sounds pretty racist) and kept belligerently trying to get her arrested. Who would take care of her child then? Foster care? I assume since she has no one to go to that would give her bread, she also has no one to take her child while she's in jail.

@@Geekabibble crack head is more of a white thing, he didn’t call her that because she was black. It was because she was stealing like crackheads steal, this fictional man probably had dealt with more robbery as I doubt she went far to the wealthy part of the town. So he’s in a poor area where everyone is supposed to be let go? But you do know thieves come back if they don’t face consequences. Also 1.50 here then some of the next 500 people steal just a few bucks and then more and more. There’s a gas station channel with a video of a guy who kept stealing because he never faced any consequences. At first it was just snacks but as it progressed it was more and more. as she would have done if needing more food, so 1.50 today then gets more bold and steals more and more. Sure maybe changes location and then steals there until caught. Also yes that possible if it wasn’t that litterly everything was pointing at him not being wealthy. 1. He’s clearly had a problem with theft 2. He has a bat? Most people buy guns for safety in low income areas as he could get robbed. 3. He wouldn’t be there if he was rolling in money, he would hire a minimum wage employee and leave. 4. Pest control is much cheaper then the damage those rats would cause 5. The fact he’s in a poor area of town means less people have/willing to spend money. Sure some passing cars might spend more, but majority is sales would be from locals. The fact she didn’t steal from a mega store or went to a food bank tells us she didn’t travel much to steal. Like I get it, people need food and all that. But this is literally killing small businesses from losing profit. I’ve worked in restaurants before and these thieves steal hundreds worth of product or plate/utensils to sell if they aren’t caught. The worse thing is they keep coming back to same places until they are worry about coming to that location due to legal ramifications. You have to understand in her eyes it’s one loaf but in his it’s the 100th+ one this week TLDR: death by a thousand cuts is what you want him to face essentially?

It happened at a gas station where I come from. The customer didn’t have his card with him and he wanted to go back home and get it while leaving proof of identification at the gas station. The gas station owner called the police and asked them to arrest the man. Police arrived, paid for the gas (20 euros) and didn’t arrest anyone. Police ain’t that bad after all
