In 1978 I worked for a makeup supplier who had told me to meet up with Angie Dickinson to deliver her order. She came pulling up in a convertible sportscar, her hair was wet. She came out and spoke with me and was so sweet and down to earth. All she did was smile as she was gracious. I found her so much more beautiful in person as opposed to how she looked on TV. I'll never forget meeting her that day.

Classic And Timeless!! "Police Woman" was quite popular on Friday Nights in the 1974-1975 Television Season on NBC ... along with "The Rockford Files," "Sanford And Son," and "Chico And The Man." A Brilliant 5!!

I agree - TV Executives probably did want a higher standard in the 1970s. Many of these opening sequences actually engaged the attention and made you want to watch. I can think of a host of great Western series - "The High Chaparral" (very popular in a school Film Club I used to run), "Bonanza", "The Virginian" etc. All with memorable themes. I, too, liked Angie Dickinson - "Police Woman" was a must see. As I recall she was a natural brunette. Hard to believe how many years have passed!

Wow the coolest theme song for an American cop show. The very first note is like zeroing in on a villain or a map, coupled with that gun-shot style hit sound of the music. Unbeatable !! Then add a sizzling dame that obviously doesn't go to the doughnut shop with the boys and presto another winner. She is so feminine and softly spoken it intoxicates many a man. YEAH

Also, PW truly is one of the better made shows of its era. What I particularly liked was that Pepper was no dummy. She was WELL cultured and read. She knew A LOT of things about a lot of things which helped her do her job well. I was just a wee one in the 70s but Police Woman is on show I have NEVER forgotten. I too will NEVER understand why TV Land or the Good Life Channel doesn't show this fantastic drama which if they did it would prompt Sony to release the rest of the series.

Thei ground breaking TV was highly influential in the UK. Because five years after Policewoman broke the barriers in terms of a woman in the lead role in a crime series i.e. 1980. The Gentle Touch (on ITV) - Jill Gascoigne as Detective Inspector Maggie Forbes and Juliet Bravo (on BBC1) - Stephanie Turner as Inspector Jean Darblay. MS Texas you've made a salient point that Angie Dickinson doesn;t get enough credit and kudos for her work on that show.

What I always loved about the opening to these shows, back when they still HAD TV themes, was that the editing for the opening and closing sequences were always 'on point'. The episode you watched may have been crap sometimes, but you would always watch the opening AND closing credits.

In 1976, I bought my first car, a green 71 LTD four-door with a white roof. It had the 400 cubic in. V-8 engine, and Ford’s bullet-proof 3-speed automatic transmission. I paid $1100 for it. I had put 210,000 miles on that car when it finally quit. As you might imagine, I was strongly triggered by the opening sequence.

I remember the Friday night this premiered, right after The Rockford Files first regular episode. NBC Fridays ruled for this seven-year-old back then -- Sanford and Son, followed by whatever NBC threw in at 7:30 (Central time), Rockford, then Police Woman. How parenting's changed -- my mom was old school on punishment, but on Fridays and Saturdays after age 6, my bedtime was pretty much whenever I fell asleep. Now? My kid's Fri/Sat. bedtime is 8:30 during the school year, 8:45-9 during summers.

Well-made, excellent acting - a must on Scottish Television in the 1970s. Opening titles make you want to watch the show. Why, oh why, aren't series still made in this style? Obviously times move on, but many of today's offerings are poor (how I hate the jumpy camerawork!)when compared to the great productions of back then. Even good theme music seems to have disappeared.

How I agree with you. Were production staff superior in the 1960s/1970s? Why no readily identifiable theme music nowadays? What of unique characters like Columbo, Steve McGarrett, McCloud and so on? Surely we could have modern equivalents? "Monk" may be an exception -it's interesting, plus no jumpy camera work.
