Wrong information handed out at the very end; you can only be charged of running the red light if you entered the intersection (marked by a limit line or crosswalk) AFTER the light was red. If you entered the intersection on a yellow light, you cannot get a ticket for running a red light. Read and understand your state's vehicle codes.

Here in Russia, the yellow light is also required to be atleast 3 seconds long. And most of the time, it is 3 seconds. Nobody fusses. Maybe that's because most traffic lights flash green for 3 seconds before changing to yellow? Some traffic cops here are corrupt, but atleast they're not that stupid to write cars tickets for "running a red" when they crossed the stop line on a permissive aspect. I'm fairly sure anywhere in the world, that when a light changes to red and you're already inside it, you must finish your maneuver.

I think that is a great safety feature to have, where the green light flashes several times before it turns yellow to give people extra warning. There are some countries in South America that use the same system.

@@ZXM23NYC32LA2ZEEIn Zelenograd (a city de-facto northwest of Moscow, but de-jure part of it) the Moscow Traffic Management Centre actually got rid of flashing green in October, for "safety reasons". They claimed that it encouraged drivers to speed up, instead of slowing down. Opinions have divided - some people (mostly urbanist types, who don't drive) support it, while others (those who drive often) oppose it, arguing that 3 seconds is not enough time to stop a car. They also add that a yellow light is a prohibitory aspect according to the Road Rules of Russia, for driving on which one could thereotically get a ticket. Although the rules do provide an exemption to that in case you'd need to brake hard in order to stop at the yellow light. (if you're too close to it for example) This is not helped by the fact that here in Russia, since 2013 drivers are fined for speeding only if they speed 20 km/h over the speed limit. So if the speed limit is 60 km/h (which is the default in built-up areas), the actual speed is 10 to 20 km/h higher. This might explain why a lot of drivers dislike this change, they simply have gotten into the habit of speeding. The traffic police in Zelenograd recently had also spoken out against the change, stating that crashes at intersections without flashing green have actually increased, and that information about "mass acceleration" on flashing green is not true. But even with all the backlash, the MTMC have stated that they're not intending to reverse the change.

@@NewBuildmini Wow, that’s quite detailed and interesting as well. I guess the same thing could be said for the countdown timers that displays how many seconds the traffic light will be red or green. I think those are mainly popular in parts of Asia, but we have all seen the countdown timers across the world on the pedestrian signals. In the United States apparently I found out it is illegal to give the drivers any indication that the traffic light is about to change red, other than the yellow light coming on, and it is also illegal to give any type of indication that the light is about to turn green. So the countdown signals and the flashing green warnings are all banned in the US. However, in the US, you can still tell when the traffic light is about to change to red. I just look at the pedestrian signal, facing the same direction that I am coming from and look at the timer. Once the red hand or in some countries, the red man stops flashing and goes solid…. And the timer gets down to 0, the traffic light will change red. So in a roundabout way, you can tell when the traffic lights are about to change in the US.

It’s just like red light cameras in America, they are put there strictly for revenue only. It’s nothing to do for your safety.......it’s just for generating a profit only. Many of these companies do things in order to make people run those red lights so they will get a ticket and in return generate a nice profit. One way is to shorten the yellow light......another way is to extend the timing of the red light so people will become impatient and purposely run the red light. Another way is to move the stop bar for their back so you will go past it and triggered the red light camera. Be very careful when you drive through intersections with a red light camera!!!!!!

We had a light set like this & the city pissed off several people. What they did after it was apparent the city wasn't going to do anything was to station people with cameras who then recorded the police running the light also. 1 person called the cops on the cop that ran the light. This went to court with further evidence of a judge running the light also. The city was caught fair & square but continued to fight it. All that did is for more people to join the effort & finally the city did adjust it. This was around 30 years ago. It did cost a judge an election.

One of the few things that California gets right is the stop light rules. JD, there, if you are over the "Limit Line", into the intersection when the light is yellow, you own that intersection until you get out. If you're slow getting out on a red, that won't hurt a bit. Californians traveling in other states often get whacked for this.

You're saying "yellow light means slow down" Okay, So if you're driving at a speed limit of 35 mph and the light is still green 15 feet before you reach the intersection but turns yellow 5 feet before reaching the cross lines, what are going to do then, slow down until you need to slam on the brakes possibly leaving most of your vehicle in the middle of the intersection or are you going to keep going risking the yellow light turning red before making it to the other side while hoping a cop doesn't give you a citation for "running a red light"?? 🤔

Only slow down if it is safe to do so. A light won't prevent you from getting rear ended, and it's literally impossible to react if it turns yellow .1 seconds before you enter the intersection.

The reason I why they made the yellow light time shorter is just as flawed, but not necessary about revenue either: the yellow light is the time where traffic on all directions is or should be halted, so making that time somewhat shorter it can allow some extra vehicles to cross. Of course, the trade-off is a diminished safety... It's time for administrations to decide where they want their priorities to be, safety or 'the flow of traffic'... In Europe, the trend is clearly towards the first, with more and more intersections where lights no longer allow crossing traffic when the pedestrian light is green...

When the light turns yellow you're supposed to slow down, and then stop 5 feet away at the stop bar outside the intersection when the light turns red. Problem is people don't pay attention on the goddamn road, and go to damn fucking fast, or they don't care, or even pay attention to where the intersection actually begins that to know where they're supposed to stop at, and added to that they don't care about pedestrians, or the safety of pedestrians. My issue is if you can't slow down within the three seconds giving on yellow, and then not actually care enough to pay attention to the stopbar to stop outside of the intersection on red that's your fuck problem, and you deserve to pay the money for running a red light, but you also deserve to pay $150 for stopping inside the stopbar and failing to yield to pedestrians. People should learn how to fucking drive before they start complaining about the intersection lights, and that's coming from somebody who's been a pedestrian all his life and who's had to deal with people who are driving 5 to 10 miles faster than the speed limit at the intersections, and not a damn bit of attention to their surroundings. Yeah I can understand the whole idea of Independence. But how hard is it to follow the rules of the road and yield to pedestrians?
@zachariaholmsted786

If the yellow light is too short, there will be a spot on the road where you won't have enough distance to stop safely or have enough time to get through the intersection before red.
