Those things look like a hand-full to land! I hope there's enough interested people around forever to keep gems like these flying.

resomony, most of them are owned by rich dudes, however there are few pilots that can fly them, they can be a handfull without flaps! thanks for your comment, Mike - AirflowNZ

Great planes and great showing of them but that landing field need s a lot of work. I wouldn't use it on a regular basis-you should use the paved surface. It will probably save your undercarriage in the long run. Every time I watch these I-16s,they give me a kick in the pants. Just a fantastic little plane. Well done guys-thank you so much!

Craig, vintage aircraft pilots prefer to land on grass, its more forgiving and not so tough on the tyres when landing. Mike - AirflowNZ

B2, they were built in the USSR and shipped out to New Zealand. After this display they were sold off to museums. I think only a couple are flying today. Google will show you were they are. Mike - AirflowNZ

What engines are these beauties using?
@AirflowNZ
3 жыл бұрын
Luis, Google says the engine is a1 Shvetsov M-63 9-cylinder radial engine. I understand these engines are still fitted to the aircraft although some say a few have Wright replacements. regards, Mike

Why do they always sound like a cylinder or 2 isn't firing
@AirflowNZ

RL, you got me there! I know when they have been idle for a time a little oil can get info the lower cylinders and cause spluttering (and smoke) for a short time. Perhaps the carburettor is a bit primitive with regard to equal distribution of mixture to cylinders? cheers, Mike - AirfloNZ

It's due to the individual stacks, (one pipe per cylinder) you only get to hear one side of the engine. Most radials have a manifold linking them together.
