The Mosca was obsolete by the time WW2 started, but when it first entered service there was nothing like it anywhere else. Retractable landing gear, all metal monoplane construction, just to name a few of the advanced designs this plane had.

LOTS of kills. It was a strong warbird - you could effectively counter-fight with Bf.109E flying it...of course it WAS for experienced pilots only, as Rata was over-sensitive and required constant attention at landing, but if you were skilled enough, you coud do anything you wanted.

See the video many times..Love it! The Rata was in its time a very inovativ plane, but on other side today,it looks so funny. The story tells,its not easy to fly..the russian pilots saying,.."If you can fly a polikarpov,you can fly any plane" Its maeby because the smal wing area and the big fuselage and low power in the earlyer models.He need a long runway to build up speed enough for take of.And with the short fuselage a sensitiv plane,similar to the Beegee's. Thanks for showing this legend!

@Treetop64

Wasn't nearly all metal. The wings had metal spars and framework but was fabric/wood covered with some metal at critical parts. The cowling was all metal, of course, to deal with the heat of the engine directly inside. The fuselage was all wood - even the stringers were wooden. The tail surfaces were wooden. There were metal fairings where the wings and tail surfaces joined the fuselage. However, it was indeed the worlds first retractable gear, cantilevered monoplane fighter in active service.

Cutting edge when it was first introduced as the world's first low wing cantilever monoplanes. Not so much in 1941 when it was going against the latest generation 109's and 190s. You had to be brave to saddle up in that thing and take to the skies in the days after Barbarossa.

Almost no forward sieht because the huge engine. May you take attention to my vids of flying in the P 51. Cheers, Axel

I think it was also useful for flying in cold weather, if I recall. An engine runs best within a certain range; if you're cruising at half-throttle in -20deg F weather, the engine can get TOO cold, and run less efficiently. Thus, the shutters could be opened an closed to whatever amount was needed to keep the engine at juuust the right temp. It's kind of like how diesel trucks put shrouds over their grilles in cold weather. And an I-16 pilot should be good enough to keep an eye on the temp!

Also at the time of the Nazi invasion of 1941 they were already phasing out the Polikarpov I-16's and introducing the more modern Lavochkin LaGG-3 and Yakovlev Yak-1 in ever increasing numbers. As things were the great Yak-9 and La-5 were designed and first flown in 1942 when the first batch of lend-lease aircraft such as the P39 Airacobra and P40's arrived. But fair enough, the Soviet pilots loved the P39, especially it's excellent all around vision and range.

Yes, it does kind of. LOL. Back then, planes were far slower; they were just getting used to the idea that drag doubles as speed increases. So with the retractable gear, it was still more streamlined than many other planes. It's hard to make any radial engine "streamlined"; they improved it with the "I-180" prototype, which was a more streamlined I-16. It never went into production though.

LOL, you mean "GeeBee", for "GB". "Beegee's" are a 1970's Disco-music band. And yes the I-16 was difficult to fly, for the reasons you gave, but also because it had a very large engine for it's size, and was "close coupled", meaning the engine was very near the wings. The WWI "Sopwith Camel" was similar in this way. In both planes, the large engine and "close coupled" layout make it very dangerous to fly, but give excellent agility. The Camel killed more of it's pilots than the enemy shot down!

It looks like the pilot can get his head blown off his just sitting behind that prop. Pilot comfort wasn't a big deal to Stalin's designers. In all honesty, all WWII fighter planes were incredibly noisy when sitting behind 1,500 hp, that's why all German pilots who got to fly the Me-262 commented on the incredible silence in the jet.

Hallo Heribert, mit Sicherheit hatten die Russen mehr Probleme, die Werkstoffe und Bearbeitungstoleranzen darzustellen. Not entirely true. The American lend lease aircraft didn't become serious until 1943 at which time they took up a minority of all the planes they used in the USSR. All in all 25% of all fighter aircraft in the Red Army were of American or British manafacture, and it was mostly older models like Hawker Hurricanes, P40's and P39's. Although they focused on tank production and infantry arms, they still produced more Il-2 attack aircraft than any other nation produced any other type of aircraft.

You've never seen the La-5/7 or the MiG-3 then, I take it? Not that the Yak was actually bad looking either. In any case, the Russians were smart enough to realize that making GOOD, easy to make fighters was more important than making them "sexy" and harder to make.

dear Victoria, this Volume were cut off, always i used the zoom and so the electrical motor of the (not so expensive) Camera. Motor too, as i supose, much current, Batteries were low, so i think, ther was then not enough voltage for Sound AD Converter. Kind of low dump, like, when you turn statrer of your car, all current goes to the starter and the Radio becommes silent.

You know, I disagree with you in this sense...from my point of view, that are GERMAN aircraft and tanks who look like irons and coffins, however they are functional - i.e. plain and easy to control; take, for instance, Pz.IV or Dornier 215. As for russians, they always keep the notion of natural beauty in their mind. Look for Tupolev 154 or 134, for instance. We've had no one ugly aircraft in mass production.
