It's wednesday afternoon, the 18th of may 2016. While we're working on the administrative duties our evening shift has already been going on for a couple hours. The clock shows 4 P.M. by now and the evening commute will be well in progress by now. Despite that, it's calm on the radio.
Suddenly the radio starts cracking out of nowhere and we hear a collegue yell. By the tone of his voice we know it's serious; "Dispatch, 6471, heavy collision on the A15...!".
The words haven't even left his mouth yet before multiple units are rushing out of the police station. In the first phase of the collision, we're not sure if our collegue is involved with the crash aswell and/or has been injured. We're rushing code 3 towards the scene. Meanwhile we hear that the air ambulance was notified aswell and dispatch keeps giving out more information. It becomes more clear that this is a very heavy collision. The entire A15 towards Rotterdam is blocked and debris is everywhere. On the Bannenweg in Gorinchem we spot an ambulance infront of us that is also heading towards the crash from the Beatrix hospital.
When we drive on to the A15, it doesn't take much time to draw the conclusion that all traffic on the A15 is completely stuck. Eventually we get stuck ourselves on the shoulder and are we unable to get closer to the scene. We have to continue on foot. Arrived on the scene of the collision, we spot complete chaos. One truck has crashed with full speed into another truck, parked on the shoulder. A moment of shock hits us and we realise the speed at which this occured is unbelievable. Multiple collegues are taking care of the victim that was flung out of the truck by the collision and is now on the ground meters from his truck.
In this #PRO247 you can see how the emergency services work during an heavy collision, help the victim, and are required to improvise due to the circumstances. The A15 is eventually closed for hours and due to the blocked freeway and the police quickly drive two ambulances around, on roads that are also jammed by the closed freeway.
The victim with the head injury has been transported code 3 to the hospital in Rotterdam. Luckily, the victim did not obtain any permanent damage.
Later it was discovered that the victim was using his mobile phone right before the crash. It's possible that the victim did not see the parked truck because of this. Because the victim wasn't wearing a seatbelt, he was flung out of his cab. The driver was given a €450,- fine for using his mobile phone while driving.
Luckily the victim can still retell the story, but it was very close!
Going on the road? Wear a seatbelt and put away your phone and any other distractions and focus on the driving!
