When they retreated after trying to take the norwegian city of Trondheim in 1718, 4300 out of 10 000 swedish soldiers died of freezing, starving or from other diseases. It was winter and the few roads on those mountains were really poor. Many soldiers got lost in the blizzards and some found their way to norwegian farms only to excecuted by the angry citizens. A really tragic story. The officers had proper fur coats and food but the regular soldiers had not.

Many Swedish POWs and thralls also had to work on St Petersburg to complete the Tsars dream. The thousands of Swedes that was sent to Siberia had to work as well, some joined the Russian military but was promised on their demand not to fight Sweden so they were sent to fight like Mongols in the East. Many Swedes settled in Russia got a wife and converted to Orthodoxy. But most were traded and sent back to Sweden after and during the war. @Mstislaw AA Yet the war continued for 12 more years. So Sweden were obviously not out of the fight after Poltava.
@594-d9b
4 жыл бұрын
@Mstislaw AA Quite foolish statement. Sweden was a Great Power during this era and had a bigger standing army than all of its neighbours. It fell due to the strongest european coalition in the 18th century attacking it, without any real allies, after a major misgrowth and cold winter, and with a 17 year old boyking. After Poltava the Russian could still not mount a real attack against the swedish mainland, and even taking Finland took them quite a while. Stralsund only fell SIX years after Poltava, and that was due to the sheer amount of Prussians/Russians and Danes. There is this misconception that after Poltava, the swedish army was completely out of the game and there was no resistance after it. This is wrong. Tsar Peter I knew the strength of the enemies empire still, and was reluctant to attack. Also, let's talk population for a minute. Sweden could rely on 1.5 million swedish speaking people standing ready to produce men for their wars. Their empire as a whole had 3.5 million, but for example Estonia and Livonia would be more of a hassle to recruit from due to cultural and linguistical diffferences. For the sake of argument, let's imagine they had 3.5 million people fully ready to produce young men for war. Russia had: 15 million. Poland-Lithuania had roughly 10 million, Prussia brought an additional 1.5 million, and Denmark-Norway 1.3. That's a whopping difference, especially when you consider how small Prussia was at the time in relation to Sweden. Sweden simply could not afford to half-ass their military, as countries like Russia could, and allow 20,000 young men to freeze to death in the rivers of Narva. That would have been a complete military disaster. However, they could still re-gain some losses. Having read a letter after Poltava, composed by the King and one of his subordinates, they were all quite optimistic about being able to recuperate their losses after Poltava, and they immediately ordered for the lost regiments, from infantry to cavalry as well as artillery, to be raised anew. It is unclear to me whether this indicates how brainwashed they where, or if it indicates that the situation was not as bad as one may think. I'm inclined to believe the latter, due to the fact that the King was still able to launch an effective offensive against Norway a whole nine years later, among other factors. Would also like to mention that Sweden did very well against multiple foes. They defeated Denmark-Norway, Poland-Lithuania, and Saxony on largely their own. Quanitity does not equal good ability to fight on many fronts, per se, as this fact clearly shows.

@Mstislaw AA Russia is a significantly bigger country than Sweden, even when you just count the western portion where the majority of the population is. The Russians were able to gather tens of thousands more men than the Swedes, and in much less time, but that's why the Caroleans developed a specific style of fighting, to make up for the fact that they were lucky to be outnumbered just 3 to 1

This 21-year long war has left an imprint on many swedes still to this day, we remember it with sorrow. Most swedes have at least 1 ancestor who fought in this war. Year 1700 Sweden's population numbered around 2 million people, then having an army of 200.000 men meant that pretty much every man in warfare age was deployed in the Great Northern War. And we still wonder what happened to our king. "I hope with Gods help that I within the coming years will se you again, my beloved ones, my best friend and joy." - Jon Stålhammar to his wife, Saxony november 1706. "It was so cold that the ox under burden fell stone dead to the ground. The flying birds in the air fell down to earth dead. Many of of us will remember this christmas night forever, as well as the whole christmas feast, if we are to live so long" - Erik Larsson Smepust, Petrovka village, Ukraine 23 december 1708. "I am not able to describe the terror I have seen, in piles of 10, 20, 30 and 40, swedes laid dead. They were lying on the ground fully equipped with their backpacks on. The sleds were loaded and strained with horses, but both men and horses were dead" - Norwegian major Emahusen, early january 1719. This was known as the Carolean Death March. "As late as year 1729, 5 swedish soldiers passed Moscow and St.Petersburg on their way home to Sweden after 20 years in captivity." Letters and memoirs from the book "Karoliner" (Caroleans) by Alf Åberg and Göte Göransson 1976. It is so sad to know how so many suffered in this war, they never had the chance to see their loved ones again. Sabatons song "En livstid i krig", Lifetime of War depicts it very well. We will always remember these men and their widows, everyone that sacrificed their lives in this war. May they forever rest in peace.

Sabaton chose to sing about Poltava where the Carolean's outnumbered and exhausted fought the larger Russian force without question and even when there was only 4000 left they still charged the foe, they fought and died for their king, Now if that isn't the ultimate song about the greatness of the Carolean's? I don't know what is. (P.S Great Video and channel can't wait for a video on Killing Ground/Ett Slag färgat Rött)

The swedish version is so beautiful! The atmosphere it gives is really powerful and majestic! As a french, I deeply wish to hear it live outside of Scandinavia too! To be absolutely fair, I did try to learn the lyrics by listening and reading them. But some spelling had me confused. So... jag lär mig svenska nu! XD Now, I know the lyrics! Ahahahah (all right, it's not the only reason I'm learning but it's funny ^^) No, but seriously, it felt thrilling to be able to sing along with the band in Copenhagen in February

I was blown away with how familiar Swedish sounded to Irish. There was no mutual intelligibility with the words, phonetically though it reminds me of something you would hear on TG4!

So I went to my first Sabaton concert Sunday. They opened up for Judas Priest. They played Carlos Rex. I love that song, I'll have it on repeat while I'm at work. Now I have heard it a couple of times in Swedish. But when they song it at the concert in Swedish it kinda threw me off for a bit. But I was able to catch up with them and sing along. 🤘🖤

I came to a showing in Edmonton and Sabaton asked a crowd of maybe 400 if they wanted to listen to the next song in English or Swedish. Maybe 6 people cheered for the English version and everyone chuckled, but the entire crowd was lit for the Swedish version. I think I may have been the only one in the crowd who couldn’t sing the Swedish version at the time and boy was I embarrassed about that

I'm from Colombia, not a country easily recognised by the average Swedish citizen but I must say that this album in Swedish is SO great from start to end. Fortunately thanks to my knowledge in German I was able to understand a little of the lyrics on the Swedish version without using translator but jeez, this album is easily one of my favourites of you guys just because of how you have told the history of your country, where in countries like mine (Colombia) is pretty much unknown. Great Work Sabaton!

Poltava is my native city. And there is a big deal monuments connected to the battle in the city erected during Russian Empire times. Actually in the time of actual events the population of Poltawa was supporting Ivan Mazepa and not the Russians. And Russian garrison under Kelin was more like an occupation force. So to balance the things a bit in addition to Russian imperial monument the Mazepa monument was unweiled a couple of years ago. There is also a Ukrainian-Swedish poetry festival held for couple of last years in June aroundthe dates when the battle took place. Marvelous to see comments from actual descendants of Swedish veterans of the battle here!
