It's actually directed by Tobe Hooper (the director of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. If you haven't seen the 2nd movie, watch it, it's more of a comedy this time but it's so over the top funny! XD), but the movie really does have a lot of Spielberg's feel and tone in it, as a producer he had more controll over the production (he's also one of the writers). The tree is based on an actual tree that was outside of Spielberg's bedroom when he was a kid and he found it scary. Those where real skeletons, they where originally from a medical school and they did it because it was more cheaper than making their own fake skeletons. The movie has a sad story; Dominique Dunne, the older daughter, was strangled to death by her ex-boyfriend and Heather O'Rourke, the little blonde girl, died of intestinal stenosis and was only 12 years old. Before Heather passed away she was actually in two Poltergeist sequels. There's also an unneccessary remake and it came out at the time when there was A LOT of paranormal/ghost movies in 2010's! I didn't do anything special on the actual Halloween day, but the whole October I did a "31 Films, 31 Days" challenge on Instagram. I love the doggo too, I used to have a Golden Retriever =)

Katie, the young lady playing the eldest daughter, Dominique Dunne, died shortly after this film was made due to a violent attack by her ex-boyfriend, John Sweeney. He choked her in a fit of jealous rage when she broke up with him, and she died several days later in the hospital in Los Angeles. I, unfortunately, grew up with John Sweeney in Hazleton, PA, so I have an unfortunate connection to this young lady's tragic death. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about her. 😞😥

@trotter73ca
11 ай бұрын
@@skeletalk I'll give you a little info on the ones you haven't heard of. Planet Terror was part of a double feature that included the movie Death Proof. They were an homage to the 1970's 'grindhouse' movies, Quentin Tarantino (Deathproof) and Robert Rodriguez ( planet terror) wrote and directed them. Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things was one of writer/director Bob Clark's earliest movies. He also did Black Christmas. But his most known movie is A Christmas Story (1983) They had a shoestring budget and the cast did double duty, doing makeup and practical effects etc. It's considered a cult classic now. High Tension is a French movie. I don't want to give any spoilers but I thought it had a great omg moment.

Rest in peace Heather O’Rourke (Carol Anne). December 27, 1975 - February 1, 1988. She was only 12 💔 To create the effect of the house being consumed at the end, they used a smaller scale model surrounded by blue screen with an industrial grade vacuum behind it, two props guys that had shotguns blasted the house, and the pieces were sucked into the vacuum. The footage was replayed in slow motion and they added the surrounding footage of the neighborhood where the blue screen was. This is prime example of why I love practical special effects over CGI!

Hi, Katie. Another fun reaction! Thanks! Keep up the good work. Another really great horror movie that came out the same year is "The Thing," which you reacted to. Here is some trivia about "Poltergeist": - The house used in the film was actually a real house located in Simi Valley, California. It still exists today and is a popular spot for fans to visit. - The scene where JoBeth Williams falls into the swimming pool and is attacked by skeletons was filmed in a tank built specifically for the scene. The production team built a false floor at the bottom of the pool to create an artificial sense of depth. - The special effects used in the movie were groundbreaking for their time and included the use of a puppet, animatronics, and practical effects to create the film's frightening moments. - In the scene where the tree comes to life and attacks the house, real branches were used and controlled by multiple crew members off-screen. - The film's soundtrack was composed by Jerry Goldsmith, who won an Academy Award for his work on the movie. Some of his other popular scores are: - "Planet of the Apes" (1968) - "The Omen" (1976) - "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (1979) -- "Total Recall" (1990) - Spielberg initially intended to direct "Poltergeist" himself but, due to his commitment to directing "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" simultaneously, he handed the directorial responsibilities to Tobe Hooper while remaining heavily involved in the creative process. - The production faced several challenges, including issues with child labor laws. As a result, some of the film's more intense scenes featuring the child actors had to be shot without approval, raising significant concerns about their well-being. - The movie originally had a different ending. After consulting Spielberg, it was decided that the film needed a more uplifting conclusion. Therefore, the final scene, where the family gathers around a television surrounded by the destroyed house, was added to give a sense of closure. -The clown in the film was actually played by a person, not a puppet. Actor Lou Perryman donned a custom-made clown suit, complete with built-in animatronics that moved the face and arms. - Actress Zelda Rubinstein, who played the psychic in the film, was actually a real-life psychic and spiritual advisor to many Hollywood stars. - The famous line "They're here!" was actually ad-libbed by child actress Heather O'Rourke on-set. -The film's iconic poster, featuring a ghostly hand reaching out from a television screen, was designed by artist John Alvin, who also created posters for "Blade Runner" and "E.T." In a 2019 interview with "Deadline," Spielberg reflected on the legacy of "Poltergeist" and how it impacted his career. He said that the success of the film helped him gain more creative control over his projects, and that it opened doors for him to work on more complex films like "The Color Purple" and "Empire of the Sun." He also called "Poltergeist" a "terrific" film that he would be proud to show his grandchildren.

The Book of Thay looks awesome! I spent the weekend at the Whitby goth weekend and then had a horror movie marathon on Halloween night. I loved watching this as a kid, it's a classic. The special effects and characters are great. I also heard there's a really creepy rumour about this film being cursed. I assume you looked it up already, but yes, the house getting pulled into the portal was done practically by...pulling a scale model of the house through a small opening. Simple concept, but very challenging to design & execute. The component parts of the model all had to be wired together, and then give way in a coordinated manner. And the crew only had one chance to get it right! It's kind of slept on even by 80s movie fans, but that has to be one of the greatest practical effects ever committed to film. Regarding the face scene, I thought it was a little janky even when I saw this in the theater in 1982 when I was a kid. The transition from the actor to the prosthetic was too jarring, but they could have easily solved that problem in editing without needing to have a "better" prosthetic. (And besides, the different layers of the prosthetic that get peeled away are actually really cool. It just needed some editing finesse.)

The house one is absolutely unbelievable, idk how that doesn't get more hype it's so creative and impressive, that scene alone deserved an award. The face scene was the only thing "off"

For years, it was heavily rumored that Spielberg actually directed the film, but for some kind of contractual reason couldn't put his name on it as director and so Tobe Hooper was credited. The actors have come out to say that while Spielberg was very hands on, it was Hooper who was behind the camera. Regardless, even with the actors speaking up on behalf of Hooper, some fans still maintain it's all Spielberg

What did I do on Halloween this year? I watched a lot of horror reaction videos! 🤣 That was such a great Poltergeist reaction! I must say though: I had to cover the heart monitor because I was getting concerned for both you....and me! (I have a heart condition too, I just found out a couple of weeks ago). So I put a little piece of paper in the corner of the screen so I could concentrate! Turns out I needn't have worried, you were fine on this one. (I figured you would be; only the clown jump scare worried me a bit, and even that, we have so much prep for that jump scare!). LOVE the parents in this movie; for me, they make the movie. You were right in tune with the "mama bear" thread of the movie; it's all women! The husband is useless! He can't even get the keys in the ignition! He's all bluster! He doesn't listen and pulls on the rope! When they fall out of the ceiling, they're covered in placenta. The medium is a woman, the lead scientist is a woman. Motherhood....and also a subtle burn on 80s right wing politics.....is definitely the underlying theme of the movie. THANKS! See you on the next one! PS: LOVE the Book Of Thay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS: This came out the same month as "The Thing"! No one went to see "The Thing" though because everyone was seeing Poltergeist and E.T. that summer (it was "the Summer of Spielberg"). American Werewolf In London had been the year before. A good time for practical effects! The face thing always looked "fake", but no one cared just because it looks so wild! If I looked in the mirror and saw that, I'd freak, I wouldn't worry that it didn't "look realistic"! lol. It was good enough for an entire movie theatre to squrim, scream and go "eeeeeeeew!" :D

Literally every movie from the beginning of movies used real skeletons. The only reason anyone brings it up for this is because it's about ghosts and 2 actresses died.... literally YEARS apart. One by an abusive boyfriend, the other a medical misdiagnosis. Neither are due to a curse, and when people invoke that, it misrepresents and disrespect both actresses.
