First of all I love how Polyphemus looks so young here as if he is about the same age as Odysseus maybe even younger. You know, in human years not Cyclops years. Also, we have to consider that Polyphemus lived alone with his sheep. There were other Cyclops but they weren't friends or something. So his favourite sheep is like someone else's favourite person. Best friend. So Odysseus practically killed his best friend so Polyphemus did the same. I also love Odysseus expressions. Like, you don't show him frightened all the time, he's more like he has to actually listen to all those terrible threats that he knows the Cyclops means and still not show any fear because he is a leader and a soldier and he can't show that he is terrified, even though he has a plan. I can basically see him trying to stop himself from shaking while he is listening to Polyphemus
@katerinaaqu
Жыл бұрын
Well Polyphemus also lives by his sheep. Can't say if they are "his friends" but he certainly has them for nutrition (in Odyssey he drinks only their milk) and he has them for food and clothing etc. Basically he is a Shephard. So of couese his flock is important to him. His relationshisp with the other cyclops is indeed not known in Odyssey but maybe they are close enough to be a community (they come to ask who hurt him) but they lack the emotional capacity to be close to each other (they no longer care when they believe he did it himself) so yeah maybe they are semi-isolated from each other and keep themselves to themselves so to speak. But in any case the whole thing should end at the mutual apologies but Polyphemus chose to violate the rules of Xenia by killing those who entered his house

On Odyssey it is mentioned that they kinda lived each on their own keeping themselves to themselves so to speak even if they shared a prosperous land that was great for agriculture and such. So they were not emotionally close but they would stick with their own kind so to speak. It doesn't say whether they had any other kind of relationship but that which seems indeed to be the case; that they just co-existed they didn't really build relationships to each other

@@galaxycat3698 From what I remember, the other cyclops are also children of Poseidon, so more estranged family who don't really speak to each other, this explains why they're concerned when they hear Polyphemus screaming but when he yells "Nobody" go back to what they were doing. The original book describes them as "barbaric" which, given this is Greece, could simply mean dumb and simple.

Odysseus does tell the survivors to bring the flock along in a later song, and with his crew starving in this retelling it's hard to say for certain that he would've just left had Polyphemus honored the laws of hospitality. Polyphemus still dishonored those laws by accepting the offer only to still attack them, I just enjoy seeing more monstrous characters given depth and reason for their outrage as well as heroes that are allowed to be duplicitous, arrogant and conniving in the same scene

You made Polyphemus so incredibly… passive looking? I’m not sure how to describe it but I’ll try. When I listened to the soundtrack by itself, I was terrified of Polyphemus. Legitimately, the ending verse of “Survive” ACTUALLY gave me trouble sleeping. I had a hard time listening to “Polyphemus” again after listening to it a first time. Goes to show how amazing the music is. But it also didn’t make me see Polyphemus as a person. A big part of the musical is that Odysseus learns that he’s not as good of a person as he thought he was, and his fight with the Cyclops is mentioned a lot as one of the times Odysseus was a bad person for not killing the Cyclops out of mercy. But I didn’t really see the big deal about it 😅. I thought that such a terrifying monster, a monster who could terrify someone just with sound, didn’t really deserve the empathy. But here, you made Polyphemus very… gentle. I always imagined him as an enormous shadow over Odysseus and the soldiers. I never even called him by his name until now. But you made him act so undeniably human that I suddenly feel like Odysseus is the one in the wrong here for killing Polyphemus sheep, despite there being no way of him knowing that and the fact that Odysseus was the one who tried to offer peace and payment to Polyphemus. You made such an evil and horrifying monster into a person. That’s… INCREDIBLY impressive. Again, this guy gave me trouble SLEEPING.

The fact that Odysseus didn't tell his name tells us that he knows he just came inside a dumb lions cave and he can get out if he plays dumb as well. If he never blinded the cyclops a lot of people have died and not only that he knows that a lot of families would have suffered and again if ur asking me y he hasn't ended the suffering of the ur talking abt a huge giant who eats tiny humans when he is hungry it's a fight or clever flight situation. If he knew he was being played he wouldn't have said "Nobody hurt me" he would say "this man hurt him. He lied" I doubt he had any idea he was being played. Which is how the myth worked after all. @lindenshepherd6085 well it still made little sense. In ancient Greek it would be "Ούτις" "Ùtis" and yeah although it does sound like name in modern ears it still would mean "nobody" in antiquity which would still strike as odd. Okay I mean there were fellows with name that translated as "blue" or "bright" etc and even "Polites" simply means "citizen" or "someone who resides in a city" but still maybe the name "Nobody" would still strike as odd. I believe it was to show Odysseus's cunning and the little mental capacity of Polyphemus or that Polyphemus was already drunk at that point or tipsy so he didn't put two and two together
@katerinaaqu

@keeganross well it was still weird for someone to be named as such i believe. We do have plenty weird namws in mythology of course but Nobody kinda surprasses that hehehe there are so many demi gods either sons of Poseifon or of any other God on homeric poems that it's not that odd. Besides a great deal of Poseidon's children were either giants or monsters and at some point they became infamous criminals like those Theseus faced. The Poseidon family is a little bit overboard hahaha well that was the point hahahaha to show the cunning vs raw strength battle. Normally someone would be skeptical against a man whose comrades you have just eaten. I doubt that he would wish you good but yeah when Odysseus got him drunk he introduced himself as Nobody. And when woken up by this incredible pain the last thing he could do was to put two and two together Hehehe you are not wrong though hehe I mention that too to my reply

Neither the one nor the other. In Odyssey it is stated that cyclopses knew what wine was but they didn't make it often. He was actually excited to taste such a great wine. Two it wasn't "cheap booze". Originally it was a godsend wine they had for Xenia gift exchanges. Also in bronze age there weren't any currencies so what Odysseus is offering is compensation or fee for accidentally killing his flock like you would pay a Shephard tax if you hit one of their sheep with your car. You would just use money while Odysseus would use material. Ps: in the original Odyssey they didn't even touch his sheep. They waited for him to offer him gifts of Xenia and then take provisions of hospitality as an exchange and then they would be on their way

@@katerinaaqu more of the animatic rearranging the context of the song I think, and in it's own fair way i'd say. From original myth to adapted, script, even an individual actor playing the same role and reading the same scene might just act it out ever so slightly different put of personal temperament and interpretation. Which I imagine is what's happening with these different animatics, an acceptable amount of wiggle room. The cyclops pupil is still dilated into a predatory gaze, gives of the impression he's still rather mad but is keeing it back out of confusion.
@katerinaaqu

@LizVargas100 of course. I am referring to the song in general. As in the original Odyssey no one killed any of his flock. Obviously the creators of the musical wanted an extra motive for Polyphemus to kill them among others. And yes each creator of these animatics simply adds what they think is better based on the sound material they have. But either way the tone of the singer is out of surprise and longing to respond to the original Odyssey in which Polyphemus was positively surprised by the gift as well as ot seems to me here

Also in the original story they didn't kill anything they just waited for him. But even in this story, they offered a compensation gift for accidentally killing one of his animals like in modern era you are supposed to pay money to the Shepard if you kill one of their animals. Going on a full killing spree is not the way especially if the other apologizes. Odysseus had to take advise from the gods and then do another trip to cleanse himself from the murder of the suitors and they were planning the murder of his son. Imagine in this context

Also if we go by the logic of different species equals different treatment then the cyclops shouldn’t be mad if humans are considered a different species since from the human perspective it’s not theft if it’s from a different species so they don’t have to respect Polyphemus’ property since he’s not human

The more I read into Greek myth, the more I feel sorry for the monsters in them. Asterion didn't asked to be trapped in a labyrinth and fed only prisoners. Medusa didn't asked to get raped by a god and turned into a monster as a means to protect her. And Polyphemus didn't asked for his pet to be killed and to be blinded for defending his home..
@The_Lord_of_Cryptids

It's worth noting that that version of the Medusa myth is Roman, not Greek. The version seems to have been either invented wholesale or modified from local legends by the Roman poet Ovid. Ovid himself was also known for a particularly strong anti-authority bent due to his past and was known for playing up the uncaring gods toy with the lives of mortals aspects of his retellings of myths. Regardless he came long after Rome's conquest of Greece and as such his myths should be looked at as the Roman myths they were not Greek myths. In the original Greek myths Medusa was a monster from birth and was one of three sisters with the same powers and appearance.

I always wondered, isn't the wine they give Poly from a container in his cave, meaning it was his wine they were trying to trade? If it's theirs, why would they bring it from the ship to the cave if they think it's unoccupied? I'm overthinking. Either way, a quick drink can't replace a living, breathing friend, so I don't blame him (as much) for what he does next. He's an emotional sort, has been intruded upon and now he's in terrible distress.

Holy shit this is impeccable!! The designs are awesomeeeee, you did an amazing job mate! I have an animation project that my friend is working on, ik this seems out of the blue, but I was wondering if you'd be interested in taking a scene, if not that's totally fine, I just think your work is so cool, I can give more info if needed

Cutest Polyphemus ever for animatics to that song. There sure is empathy for him like that. But eating people to deal with problems.. I wouldn't. Just my opinion but I don't know where they were already, it's kind of unhygienic. At least wash them first, but I don't think Poly would wash them before eating. That's the real reason to pity him... 😐

It’s a shame Polyphemus couldn’t see eye to eye, cause after making an enemy of Odysseus he’ll have no eyes to see at all

I've seen a few animations of this song and this one definitely makes Polyphemus a lot more sympathetic and chill compared to the other animations which just make him look menacing
