just a thought for you to consider: for a scratch to "be polished out" then either the entire surface must be bought down to the level of the base of the scratch, or the scratch must be filled with something" This explains a little of why you could polish it out on the Acrylic (which is soft) and not the hardlex. Scratches are like scars, if you don't get any in life you've lived a sheltered one.

Normal polywatch like you used in the video is for removing scratches on plastic (acrylic) crystals only. Normal polywatch will give the glass a nice buff and remove haze, but that's about it. If you want to remove a scratch from a glass crystal, you need a diamond paste. Polywatch actually makes a different 2-part diamond polish that works very well on glass.
@AnonX-jk3zu

Alex J Fierro - Yep you are absolutely correct. He is using the kind for plastic. Polywatch makes a special kind the diamond polish that is for glass and other harder surfaces like crystal/ sapphire glass ect... It's also more expensive at $24.00 for the kit opposed to the cheaper $12.00 Polywatch this guy is using. I'm going to get the diamond polish Polywatch for my Google Pixel 2 that has gorilla glass screen which it does specifically say it works for.

Those are gouges . I had a pretty scratched up Buliva sea star over 30 years old. I used some water stones and then scratch out car polish with an electric toothbrush. After much work the scratches were not removed but smoothed over. The crystal is polished clear but you can still see the polished over damage.

I had some 120 grit ruby rods (not as hard as diamond, but pretty hard) lying around and tried them on my wife's 18 yo Seiko (which was completely covered with scratches) as a test. The ruby definitely abraded the hardlex and I wound up with a cloudy but uniform surface. So, if I had some finer grit ruby rods I could, I believe, wind up with a like new crystal but at the cost of considerable time and money.

You'll need some rotary power such as a Dremel with very fine grit Wet & Dry Paper as a first application, maybe 1200 grit to start then working upwards toward 2000 or even 3000 paper. Use a dab of water to lubricate the paper to prevent clogging and also to cool down the glass. The scratches are near the case which poses 2 problems. 1. Be very careful and avoid scratching the case, masking off the case will help. 2. Use plenty of water as heat build up risks cracking the glass, the glass is stressed the most around the edges where it's pressed into the case, heat means expansion and not enough cooling will crack the glass around the edge. Ideally it's best to remove the movement from the case to prevent vibrations from the rotary action of the Dremel damaging the finer parts within. Then use your Polywatch paste.
@SidBonkers51

Do not uese a dremel (or other rotary tool) on acrylic crystals as they will melt and distort with the friction heat. Polywatch is for Acrylic crystals only, you need a fine diamond paste for Mineral crystal (hardlex etc)

There seems to be a few comments saying Polywatch is junk. I have always had great results with it myself. I think some may not realize that Polywatch is designed for acrylic (plastic) only. Sometimes it helps with haze on mineral crystal but primarily it is for restoring older acrylic crystals. As far as heat issues some have had, I personally restore acrylic by hand only. I'm sure a buffing wheel would work in experienced hands but you need to be very careful. I wouldn't even consider using a dremel but I'm sure braver souls than I have made it work.

There are probably fakes for half the price. In Australia it supposedly costs $20, but on ebay the ones from china are $5. $5 sounds reasonable for a small tube of paste so that might be a reason for buying fakes.

You can actually go to a shop and replace it. If you are a rough person , I still suggest a hardlex, it's not as scratch resistant as your sapphire BUT it's impact resistant. If you arent using it in a rough environment, change to synthetic sapphire.
@zamSEG

hello sir, i don't think it would work on sapphire, but maybe... maybe, if you take a lot of time, maybe the scratch can be remove or at least not so visible. there are one more thing, how about the polywatch product itself. counterfeit product also maybe the culprit, if there is a counterfeit polywatch. you can not be so sure nowdays. :)

jjlwis Hi, I bought the same model for £78 in 2015 and it shot up, but it seems to have come down again. Try Skywatches.sg, I appreciate I’m 2 years away from your comments, but it’s interesting that it’s come down again, to a bargain price. As stated before, it’s a great watch, look after it, like me and it won’t get scratched. The beadblast finish is very scratch resistant and the watch goes with all sorts of straps, whether leather or NATOs.

polywatch is designed for acrylic (plastic) crystal only. hardlex is basically seiko's own brand of mineral crystal (their own custom chemical compound), so polywatch won't work on it. what you need is some diamond polishing paste, should be easy enough to find on ebay, a small tube doesn't cost much.

I don't think so. I think it's only meant for acrylic crystals. It definitely will not work on sapphire.
@hal0eight
7 жыл бұрын
It will only work on acrylic crystals. It contains alumnium oxide, a light oil carrier and a solvent, so it softens the acrylic with the solvent and the AlO2 polishes. This is how it gets a brilliant finish on acrylic. Scratches on mineral crystals can be removed by a glass polisher if it's a domed crystal on top. If it's a flat crystal you'll need to replace the crystal. SOMETIMES you can reduce the appearance slightly with some autosol and a lot of elbow grease, but generally it's there to stay. Some people will say use cerium oxide, which will work if you have a a high torque dremel or something and have some time, but the stuff is slightly radioactive. So I'd avoid that risk and just spend a few bucks on a new crystal.

Hardlex seems to get a bad reputation on forums, but I like it, especially if it’s slightly sunken from the bezel. I have 3 Seikos with hardlex and they are pristine. And I've heard some people say that they've had their watch with mineral glass for years and never gotten a scratch on them, so you saying that isn't very convincing.
