This is so exciting! You guys are reviewing even before most of us watched it ❤ Ponniyin Selvan is too dear to me. I am a Bengali, but when the PS1 trailer dropped last year, I was so interested that I read all the books, loved the movie, went on a heritage trip for the Chola trail in Tamil Nadu with historians - we explored the events and places described in the books vs real history. And now I am so excited about this second part release 😄 Thank you guys for appreciating this movie as it's not everyone's cup of tea.

@@rukminigopalakrishnan2227 thank you....that's a nice summary...I must say that's the most empathetic response about the movie from someone who's grown up reading the book :) .... in general, the book-lovers have really torn into Mani Ratnam for these plot changes....like you said, once the decision was made to tell the story on the silver screen in 5.5 hours, some plot compromises were inevitable....plus it was a screenplay jointly written by Mani Ratnam, Jeyamohan and Ilango Kumaravel...so there must have been a lot of deliberation on these points....anyway, it's clear to one and all now that the novel has enough content and depth to merit a 70+ episode web series like Game of Thrones....would be great if that happens some day!

When Aish said to Vikram she desires wealth, power and crown (instead of running away together) showing she doesn't love him, she obviously WAS lying. Her eyes spoke the truth. Nandini always purely, whole-heatedly, unconditionally loved Aditha Karikalan, even to present day, even after what all happened. Because imagine what would happen if she did confess or affirm that she still loves him? He'd take some reckless decision to be with her, or simply the thought of confessing her love for him at this dramatic point in her life scared her. Btw, I wanted moreeee of Nandini+Aditha dynamic pleaseeee * crying hard *

*Spoilers* I think by skipping the storyline of baby swap between Mathuranthakan and Senthan Amutham, the entire core story of the PS is spoiled. Mathuranthakan is not the original son of Sembian Devi, and that's why she discourages him of wanting to be the crown prince and raises him as just a Shiva devotee. If he is the original son, why wouldlnt she want him to be crowned? And Sundara Choza and Kundhavai think very highly of Sembian Devi. If she wanted her son to be crowned they all would have agreed. There is no place for conspiracy here. And he is always the rightful heir ,

I am a recent fan of this story. When I came to know about the long history Ponniyin Selvan had in Tamil literature, I ordered the books and breezed through it in a week or so before watching the first movie in the theatre! And I was amazed at how the makers were able to stay true to the characters while still moving some plot lines and timelines back and forth and simplify, if anything, to make it work as a movie. SPOILER FOR PS-1: Case in point, the scene of Kundhavai meeting all the conspirators was not in the books! But that scene encapsulated what a badass political strategist she was. And I was hoping the same for the second part of the movie as well and I was not disappointed. They did change a lot of things, added new characters/parties who have an axe to grind against the Cholas, who were not in the picture in the books. But all of that was in service of making it work for the movie, and it did, because they remained authentic to the characters, each and everyone of them. 100% agreed this would have worked wonderfully as a series too! @Korbin, Nandini told Ravidasan to not harm Vanthyathevan and not hunt him, because that is the promise Vanthyathevan sought from Nandini. But Vanthyathevan was left to his own devices to untie and escape.

PS 2 is where the actual story and and the plot connects the dots. Being a historical fiction seen through the lens of director M Ratnam's screen play and brilliant directions Ravi Varman's great cinematography. 80 % of manual camera handle tech. Every characters' interpretation brilliantly carrying the movie well with a continuous and exciting flow till the end. It's much more realistic compared to Bahubali ( being fictional and it's heavy dependence on CGI and special effects compared, to PS ).The women in this movie held their own playing roles as important as the men. They display their subtle power, political acumen, manipulating and influencing the plot and men.around them. Vikram will be murdered. Nandini whose revenge and extreme hatred her to the point of plotting total annihilation of the chola dynasty to replace it with the Pandyans. Little does she realise that she is actually a Chola princess whose mother was the mysterious elephant lady in Sri Lanka . Thota T was genius in production design. AR as usual top with songs and music score. The romance was amazing and wonderfully touching. Great conclusion in PS 2, tying up loose ends to PS 1's movie introduction to all characters . Epic and Iconic movie which will remembered for posterity as M Ratnam's magnum opus doing justice to the novel, satisfying both the audience who read the book and those who did not.

The actual history was the great aunt was very jealous that her son was never given importance. She connives with Pandiyas to kill the brothers so that her son can become the emperor. Raja raja, that is what PS came to be known as, gave away his throne to his uncle who ruled for 16 years, then became a monk. Raja Raja took over and the first thing he did was take revenge on all those people who were responsible for his brother's death. Those people were enjoying the patronage of the great aunt.

The movie was great, however it took certain cinematic liberties & turned the climax to be different. The book climax is different. Ponniyin Selvan is all about Karthi’s character(Vandiyadevan), Trisha (Princess Kundavai), Aishwarya Rai’s character( Nandini). The story is in the book is extremely complex with side stories, political intrigue, palace coups, strategy and less about the love story of Nandini and Vikram’s character. It is about the Chola Kingdom, the rise of Arulmozhi Varman, the revenge fire of Nandini, the mute mother Mandakini, Kundavai’s smarts and the presence of mind of the boat woman - Poonkuzhali.. less about Vikram’s character. The completely bypassed the birth of twins by the mute Mandakini (old Aishwarya) and how the kids were switched at birth with another Prince. That was completely removed. Anyway, it was a great viewing… read the book.. it is an amazing 5 part book that is leagues beyond Lord of the rings or any of the western classic. Best part is, all these characters - The kings, Princesses, Chieftains, warriors etc were real people who existed as part of the chola empire. The only figments of imagination were Nandini(Aishwarya Rai), Old Aishwarya, the Boat woman.. even the assassins were real.

The ties were looseed by the gang so he could be later be blamed as the killer. When he was found with the body it would fallen on him that was original plot. However Fire would have burnt both, if they were still there destroying the proof of vengeance by pandya as Nandini is from pandya kingdom. In real history two beheading happens first by Pandyas and second by in revenge this one. It is a custom you can kill in battle but never a surrendered one or a fleeing person. . Never kill a person from behind, not even injure him. Never a non combatant. Even if you have an accidental injury the back he would give up his life.

Overall quite underwhelmed with PS2, though in totality would rate it 4 on 5, especially as a fan of the book.

It is a great movie and far, far better than GoT. It gets a few things right compared to GoT 1. It has a clear path to the climax. GoT like Sherlock, Lost, Dr Who, any movie by Chris Nolan only promises to be smart and brilliant but never delivers. Mostly by dropping easter eggs that obsessed fans can figure or by just cutting out context giving scenes. Then, failing miserably to stick the landing. PS2 sticks the landing perfectly.. The climax makes sense in multiple ways. Given the revealed motivations and the hidden motivations of the characters. You can also speculate like GoT, but the speculations make sense unlike GoT 2. Characters are complex with political and personal motivations. You can infer that a lot of the political manipulations are basically just rationalizations for what they want. The ace manipulator in the story, Nandini, is the most naive of them all. Unlike most prestige TV shows, the villains are not chess playing evil geniuses. There is no Little Finger here. They are all justified in their own head. But they are all making huge mistakes. No one is pulling a perfect con and revealing some vast conspiracy to the audience. In short it does not question the intelligence of the viewer 3. The writer, Kalki, understands power. Human beings are never Thanos like creatures who are power mad. Power has its own allure and force, which makes people do horrible things. What happens is that the use of it creates perverse incentives. Human beings then justify their actions. It is a corrupting influence. But the same people are capable of great restraint and compassion in other instances. This sense is completely missing in all American or British shows, but for The Sopranos. They tend to make people crave power for power's sake. That is a very bad reading of human beings.
