Both are awesome cars, but ill take the GTO. When it comes to owning one, most likely if the owner is in the car scene, is going to bring it to car meets and street race a little. Which is where the GTO beats the STI. Its faster in a roll and is a more rare, better sounding car. It wins on the streets, but the STI wins on the race track.

GTO wins because it's cheap to buy (now) and simple mods add gobs of power. A simple intake, exhaust, and cam upgrade puts these cars into Shelby territory. You'll never get that from an sti and if you do your engine won't last long. But again these guys are always import leaning regardless of what's being tested. One of the STI's prime contenders now is the v6 mustang.....think about that for a second. V6 MUSTANG competes with STI and even BMW, Merc, and everything in between.
@Fat-bananas

you must be smokin something strong... the latest sti competes with a v6 mustang in what? looks? an sti will destroy a v6 mustang in performance. you must be talking about a 5.0?

FatBananas Dude a v6 mustang with N/A mods destroys the sti. Throw in aftermarket suspension and brakes and the sti loses IN THE CORNERS!! That's pretty pathetic considering you're still spending about 2k less and get the ultimate sleeper mustang that can crush a boss 302. RWD cars are "natures'' natural machine. The rear legs always do the pushing and the front do the steering. Think about this. A bare bones sti vs a barebones mustang is over a 10k dollar discrepency....imagine what you can do with half of that knowing that ford has the parts on the market from other models ALREADY IN PRODUCTION!!
@Fat-bananas
10 жыл бұрын
we're not comparing tuned cars here. Anyone can tune any car to any spec they can afford. And if you knew anything about tuning, turbocharged cars are MUCH easier to pull more power with simple ECU flashes. in stock form, the latest sti can pull +1.0g on the skidpad, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, and brake from 60-0 in a little over 100 feet, CONFIRMED by edmunds. a v6 mustang is not comparable with its outdated suspension, cheaper brakes, and heavier curb weight isn't going to let it win on the dragstrip or around the track. PERIOD. You can spend money to heavily upgrade a V6 (I don't know anyone who just wouldn't shell out for the 5.0) but it still won't be a better performer than an sti, nor as practical. The fact the we're comparing an STI to a V6 mustang is abusrd... lmao this conversation is over.

FatBananas Listen to what you just said. We're comparing a v6 mustang to an STI. The sad part about this is that it's a valid debate! The v6 mustang out the box costs over 10 THOUSAND DOLLARS less than an sti! The v6 mustang with performance tires actually outperforms a bmw 328i with performance tires which is definitely a statement! The v6 is capable of being tuned to 300 WHP!! Simple mods like headers, intake, exhaust and a tune for it will bring it past 300whp! Shelby has even started produce 500hp supercharged v6 mustangs! The suspension is outdated in the back but guess what? That can mitigated with aftermarket parts! Now your obviously knowledgable about the tuning scene but the problem is that you leave it to imports when tuning has been STRONG in america since the 60's!! Back when honda and toyota were still putting motorcycle engines in their cars (I'm not knocking it, I would kill for one of the old honda 600's or a subaru van from the 60's! lo). What i'm getting at is now ford has a vct system that extends the entire product line up. the mustang 5.0 is a haeavier car with gobs of torque to compensate for it's weight and the v6 is a lighter car all around if you don't stuff it ful of features. You can only get the sti in 4door form. You can only get the mustng in a 2door coupe and NOW with the arrival of the 2015 mustang the stripper car will still be a v6 with minimal features and all of the areas of weakness from the factory addressed at the expense of cost! This is what I'm gonna say and leave it as right now. The 2015 mustang is desperation of the part of Ford. TRUST they are BOTHERED by the z28 camaro and the fact that they have no competition for the C7. The GT500 is just more power with less sense and they know it! The 2015 is LITERALLY going to be the basis in which ford takes on the corvette. Look for a 600-800hp GT500 or equivalent model (thinking they may go with the GT350 nameplate) and it's LITERALLY going to go after the corvette, z28, zl1, and if you know your cars and not just your imports those are all models that outshine the sti.

Random recommendation. When the 2005 GT0’s came out, the HP rating was crazy for a vehicle not a corvette. I remember I had a poster (from a hot rod magazine) that had the GTO doing a burnout and it said “the first 4.6 seconds of your life.” The STI at the time was such a beast and although it seems the performance has outpaced it since 2006, it’s still a great car today.

The GTO got some weak suspension parts from the factory, but upgrade them and it starts acting like it should. Though, it looks like this demo GTO didn't have the fresh-off-the-boat rear spring sag, so it probably handled better than how most people got them from the dealer.

And who cares how "quick" the STI is, sure the ET is some what close to muscle cars but the trap speed is like 10 mph slower which goes to show you which car PULLS harder and is actually faster. Wrx's and sti's are overpriced garbage. I can pull a new WRX 2 car lengths from a dig in my 2015 wrangler 2 door and go door to door with an STI. Not very impressive if you ask me.

Let me just say this. For some people, a large-displacement V8 engine is not a means to an end, but an end in itself. If I had the choice between a 300hp 2.5L V6, and a 300hp 6.4L V8, I'd take the V8 every time. Why? Because it sounds good, and because as a general rule, the V8 will be big on low-end torque, which is very nice in high-speed cruising. No shifting, no revving the motor, just roll it on a bit pass the truck.

@HeyMan096 No, I didn't mean hp levels. What I meant is, take whatever money you need to dump into a Subaru engine, if you put that same money into a LS motor, you'll probably end up with a lot more power. You are starting off with more power to begin with in the LS. Not counting base price of vehicles. Just costs of engine tuning/aftermarket parts, etc. But then again the lighter Subaru can do more since it weighs less anyway.

in a couple more years, a GTO would be one of the smartest buy's to make. Buy a fairly modern car 2005 car in 2013 or so and it would only be 10,000 at most. They wouldn't be too high on milage, parts would be easy to get a hold of. I know for a fact that power would be more than good enough for most preformance guys. Not to mention the tech in that thing, slap a G.P.S. in there sometime down the road and you have a cheap, easy to maintain, preformance piece of americana.

@need2speed94 stock LS2 gto's are more like low 13 second cars but yeah altitude could make a huge(1-2 seconds) difference but you would have to be up in the Rockies or something. The trap speeds (97.2 and 102.2) suggest that some factor was sapping the power because the goat should be trapping around 104-107 and the sti should be around 100-103. Can't seem to find any info on where the test was done though. Some people say you lose .1 for every 600 ft

I'd have either one any day, they are in different classes, like you say, so you drive them with different styles. But they are both awesome fun

@Armani335i07 Ls3 heads and a nice cam swap into an LS2 and you'll be right around 500rwhp. last i checked, you have to dive into the internals of the 2.5 and forge them before making much more than 450whp with the Subie. not hating, i love both of them, but they both respond VERY well to mods.

2 Great cars end of story. I own a 68 SS Nova and a 2011 Evo X. You don't have to choose sides.

Pontiac GTO : V8 6L 400hp Subaru : I4 2.5L Turbo 300hp So the difference is there, the subaru engine is more than 2 times smaller. LOL Now hp/displacement ratio: Pontiac : 66hp/L Subaru : 120hp/L Now you can simply understand why american muscles are better. No Turbo = High torque even at low RPM at same horsepower = smooth driving when you want = lower fuel consumption at the same acceleration rate, you don't have always to make your engine scream...

@Schalk3 It's a matter of preferences! Still muscles cars will never come close in terms of performance on the same tracks as the Impreza is good at: rally type (tight corners, country roads etc...). The suspensions are not the only factor. But I like the US muscle cars, nothing like the sound of a Hemi roaring! One of my dream car would be the '67 AC Cobra 427! I love the style and engine sound!

Fact, any 05 STI for 25K, not an underestimation. There is not replacement for displacement, 6.0L wins.

To those who say that america needs to catch up to Italy because we have big engines but maybe the same horsepower you have to realize this is done on purpose just like the ford gt back in the day against ferrari. A big v8 will last longer then a highly aggressive tuned smaller engine. How many v8 ferrari's do you see with 150,000 miles on them yet still performs like the day it came off the line. Fbody owner can tell you how reliable a v8 can really be.

From the factory the STI is better. Just watch the clips of the gear shift in the GTO vs the STI. The GTO gear shift looked like mixing a bowl of pancake batter. It doesn't take much to modify the GTO to get as adequate (or better) suspension and and drivetrain. The LS2 is capable of exceeding 1000 hp plus and still be daily driven. I'd only get the STI wagon for the cargo space. But for the money as an STI, I could get a Tundra and have all the cargo space I'd ever need and then some.

I would like to see a comparison of the GTO, new Camaro ss, new Mustang gt, and new Challenger r/t. GTO would probably lose in braking and cornering, but it would probably outrun the others at high speed due to aerodynamics.
