So is anyone running them? If so what method are you using to to retain the lifters? My only concern is the open roller design seems weaker then the closed design.

If you go to PY Forums, a guy there machined some one piece, adjustable retainers for them. He made some posts under arrow injuneering/Pontiac speed shop. I was pursuing my own style, but found some nasty issues in my 455, so it's awaiting funding to continue :-/

I don't see how the dogbone can work with the round part of the lifter body extending above flush. Please explain how that works. And I saw one of those lifter bodies hitting the cam lobe before the roller. I'm wondering if you have actually done this.

How interesting that you saw that. I looked over the video and couldn’t find it. Kindly post the time stamp where you saw the lifter body hitting the cam lobe.

I have a set of Howards link bar Hydraulic rollers in a 455 and they are very noisy, I have tried every setting under the sun and they continue to rattle. I am looking for a solution.

I heard a theory that we need an 80 lbs oil pump to keep up w/ hydraulic lifters. Whether that’s true or not, I don’t know, but I’m going to install one in my next build- I figure it can’t hurt, and maybe, just maybe, it’ll be the solution.

@@CrawdaddyCustoms I am there with the high pressure pump, it was part of the build.. I keep hearing I need to replace with Johnson's lifters.

What about getting a regrind on the cam to a smaller base circle to retain higher lifts. Im surprised the differances you found in the lifters Yet I once tossed a set of elgin Ls7 lifters i had kicking around into my 6.0 powerstroke like over 200k miles ago ford wanted $600 lol

The problem w/ a smaller base circle is the lifters will drop down further into the crankcase, further exacerbating the oil band issue… and potentially breaking the lifter bore in the process. Exactly the opposite of what we’re seeking to eliminate.

@@CrawdaddyCustoms Damn! But i dont really see much gains running rollers in a pontiac anyhow. Since most make power from high comp then run lower lift and long duration where rollers only show any real gains up in the higher rpms. But sure love having a budget roller option. Compared to throwing over a grand at comp. Price for those kits cost as much as a modest stroker kit. Hmm let me think better gains from lifters or more cubes? lol

@@hotrod6919 My biggest goal was to get an inexpensive drop-in roller to eliminate the flat-lobe issues that seem so prevalent these days. Personally, I like big cubes/torque… now hooking it up is another matter! 😂

Can you still use the original valley pan with this mod?
@CrawdaddyCustoms
2 жыл бұрын
Yes. After tinkering with stuff, I got in touch with Jim Lehman- Mr. P.Body- who pioneered the Ford dog bones/spider onto the Pontiac V8. He said he has over 25 setups running. He keeps things as OEM as he can, which includes the valley pan.

I haven’t run them yet. I got the idea from Mr. Peabody on the Pontiac forums. I spoke w/ him about this system using the Ford Windsor spider and the Ford dog bones. He says he has over 25 setups running on the street, and many have 10’s of thousands of miles on them. I’m working on a different lifter retain method than the Ford setup, but it’s taking a while.

Does lifter diameter matter or are all brands the same?
@CrawdaddyCustoms

The .842” diameter lifter is fairly standard for GM. There are a few exceptions, but most GM engines have common design dimensions due to mass production.

Sorry but it doesn’t address the real issue with hydraulic roller lifters.
