I have one in my backyard, that I moved from the front, where it was under an awning. When I dug it up, we were both the same height...5'6". That was back in 2001. We named ours Oasis, since it's the only thing planted back there. Now, in 2024, Oasis is roughly 25 to 30 feet tall. His foot is over 6' across. There are now about 10 heavy trunks on it. I just took off 5 "babies" which are all over 2 ft themselves, and am planting them in containers. I live in Florida, and the temps have varied from 100 degrees down to 30. Oasis is a real oasis to some of the local birds, who have built nests in his branches....because the sharp edges of the fronds keep the cats out.

I have a Ponytail Palm that is approximately 10 years old. It has been through a lot. It has moved from Washington state to Lower Alabama which has torrential rains at time, which has not been good for my baby. I have rescued several pups from her, but her bulbous bottom is half soft and rotting. Is there any hope of saving her, or should I say goodbye and enjoy watching the pups grow?

8:11 - I wonder how much of the root system you just cut away? All you had to do was cut the plastic container in two places (opposite of each other) and then push the container apart.

Yes I agree I jump when he was cutting the roots like that.

@@ladyt4427 He could have cut away as much as sixty percent of the roots. Desert plants are used to losing large parts of their root system during the dry season. They've adapted to regrow roots quickly when the drought ends. That's why they are so easy to grow from cuttings and to ship bareroot. When I repot my cacti and succulents, I cut away all the circling roots at the bottom of the pot.

Great video. What's the coldest temperature that your potted ponytail palm has endured? I ask, because I have a potted, ten-foot-tall ponytail that was gifted me. The rootball is around 24 inches wide.

Outside in frost free areas. Excellent potted plant for a sunny window in the north. Treat it just like a cactus. back in its homeland, it grows alongside cacti. It takes a looong time to get that big in a pot. I would guess that the plant in the video is well over twenty years old.
