@@DanielSanders-r2n I did my research, but couldn't find anything regarding "10% of American land" There's lots in there regarding how/when/for what purpose the Government can own land. There's even compelling evidence to suggest that the Federal government owning land for non-enumerated purposes (like grazing lands) might be unconstitutional. But no where does it put a fixed percentage cap on Federal government land holdings.... So where did that 10% number come from?
@kelvinjones3515

Governement can constitutionally only own the 10 square miles granted to it by the states for its center of operations(aka DC). Beyond that once a state or territory is formed the federal government has no constitutional authority to own or manage land.
@chiefcrash1
3 ай бұрын
@@kelvinjones3515 It seems like you're trying to suggest Article 1 Section 8 Clause 17 restricts the federal government to owning only 10 square miles in total. This is incorrect. It's true that the District used for the "seat of government" is limited to 10 square miles, but this is not the only land the Constitution allows the government to own (or even acquire). Further in 1-8-17, the Constitution gives the federal government authorization to own land for the erection of forts, magazines, arsenals, dock-yards, and other "needful buildings" (such as post offices, federal employee housing, basically anything connected to an enumerated function). It does not place a limited on how many of these "needful buildings" the Government can construct. There doesn't appear to be credible evidence that our nation’s founders intended to require the national government to divest itself of title to all of the lands it came to own, to newly admitted states or anyone else. Seems like the only way to arrive at such a conclusion would be to utilize the same abuse of vocabulary the "well-regulated" whiners try to use....

You can shoot on public in Wisconsin, too. I didn't know it was an "out west" thing. Just a year or two ago I completed a proper massacre of a Norinco SKS and wanted to test it out but the local public range was closed for winter maintenance, so I just called up the local game warden to double check that everything I was reading online about shooting on public land was kosher. He said it was perfectly legal to shoot on public and even recommended a specific location that would work well near me. The gravel roads into the marsh weren't plowed, and I got my little dodge pickup stuck in the snow (and spent 2 hours digging myself out after dark using a rasp and scribe from my work toolbag) but I got to shoot my SKS without doing anything illegal or bothering anyone else. And now that I've been there in the summer, without all the snow covering the road, I have a pretty good idea of where the roads are so I *probably* won't get stuck again this coming winter. 😂

I'm in Albany, NY. I used to be able to shoot my SKS in woods about 20 minutes from my house. Supposedly there is some old-timey ordinance that forbade it (in the most hilarious language), but it was never enforced. Now they enforce it with extreme prejudice. Last time I went, about 15 cop cars came out, cops flanked me with their weapons drawn, arrested me, impounded my car, and sat around brain-storming if there was any possible way to squeeze a felony out of it (it was an ordinance violation). I do still have public land I can shoot on, but now I have to drive about 50 minutes to a more woodsy (and gun-friendly) town.

Regarding the NFA registry possibly being opened to allow the addition of bump stocks or receivers as legal-to-own machine guns, the answer is no, you will not be allowed to drill that third hole. I know from personal experience after 1986 that the ATF will not allow you to alter a registered receiver because they determined that doing so is making an illegal machine gun out of a legal machine gun. I realize this makes no logical or rational sense, which is why it fits perfectly into the bureaucratic mindset.
@ARFCOMNews

Congress makes law, ATF enforces it. If Congress reopens the registry, the ATF will have to register new machine guns. Now, Congress could make a separate category and NOT reopen the registry for MGs. Or they could allow only the part in question to be registered, not the host gun.
@Paladin1873
3 ай бұрын
@@ARFCOMNews Actually (insert suitable emoji here), ATF is opening up the registry to add roughly 4000 machine guns to the fully transferable list. This was not done through an act of Congress, but by negotiations between the NFTCA and BATFE for the last several years. ATF has always had the authority to open the registry at the discretion and direction of the Secretary of the Treasury. If this authority has been rescinded, I am unaware of it. Here are two excerpts regarding the opening of the registry. The first is taken from ATF's website and the second is taken from the original 1968 law itself. ATF-P 5320-8, Chapter 3, Section 3.2.1 which delineates how the NFA Registry can be opened: "The 1968 amendments also provided for the establishment of additional amnesty periods not exceeding 90 days per period.32 To date, no additional amnesty periods have been declared. Requests for further amnesty periods have been denied, principally because additional periods could jeopardize pending ATF investigations and prosecutions of NFA violations." The source document for this section of 5320-8 can be found in the original text of the law (Public Law 90-619 - Oct 22, 1968, Section 207 (d)): " The Secretary of the Treasury, after publication in the Federal Register of his intention to do so, is authorized to establish such periods of amnesty, not to exceed ninety days in the case of any single period, and immunity from liability during any such period, as the Secretary determines will contribute to the purposes of this title."

I didn't mean to imply the ATF could not open the registry without an act of Congress. They have done amnesties for war bring backs in the past. My point was that if Congress reopens the registry, the ATF has no say in it.

Washington state has a group called "Trash No land" they go out and clean up areas that are full of garbage in state forest, national forrest, and BLM land. They also do site improvement projects where they fund raise to develop primitive shooting ranges into really fancy/free/public ones. They do work in Washington and Oregon, I've never been to one of their improved sites (Oregon is a big state and the closest one too me is a couple hours away) but have seen alot of before and after pictures, seems pretty cool. They are entirely self funded through fundraising and donations. They also have BBQ get together for after clean ups and they'll have a group range day, kinda take care of the land, build community, and have some fun. Would be neat if instead of being (insert insult that would just get my post deleted by the algorithm) and gave funding to more organizations like this. Most of the shooters I know are really good Stewards of the land, but there's always a few lunk heads that make us all look bad by making a mess. Love having range days in the outdoors, I've only been to indoor ranges a handful of times, and being in the woods just hits different.

I couldn't borrow a truck, so I had to pull up into a subdivision with our Ecto-1 station wagon with neighbors seeing us put a gun cabinet into the back of the Ghostbusters car. I told the surprised seller that we needed the gun cabinet because just shooting a zombie with a proton stream would still leave us with the same zombie, just now on fire.
