A brief video overview of McCloskey, Caramazza, & Green (1980) which provide evidence that students (some who've taken physics classes) are very bad at predicting what might happen in simple mechanical scenarios.
Note that early studies such as this focussed on presenting dynamic situations in static ways. Later studies showed better performance by people when situations were presented in dynamic ways (e.g. using animation).
