Sam, for reference those ,’wires’ on the roof and the ends (which are found on most Mk1 and earlier designs) are actually pipes to allow staff to refill the water tanks for the kitchen and the toilet. This is done by attaching a hose pipe over the end of the pipe.

A typical working with these would be : Go to wherever it is the inspection is taking place. Park up (yes, in the section). Wind the steps down on the side. Several Inspectors, Traffic, Traction, Signalling, PW and any others tagging along, would disembark and go and poke things about. (This is where I felt I'd wondered into an old black & white film) Meanwhile the Steward would produce a three course lunch for the Inspectors (the Guard got to sit and watch, no grub - not even tea). They would sit down, round the table, and be served their dinner by the Steward. When done, they'd pack up and the train would go home. A surreal experience.

The problem a manufacturer has with selling Inspection Saloons is that people will only buy one rather than buying a whole rake of them. If you compare this model with similar models the price is about right. Dapol are asking £149 for their inspection saloon and Revolution were charging £133. Both of those models had lights, DCC control and sprung buffers. But they do cost £40+ more. You get what you pay for

Being a bit biased here as I have an LMS Inspection saloon too and it's really well made and it looks lovely infront of any diesel loco. I will agree though that for the price you don't exactly get your money's worth when it doesn't even have interior lights fitted! The good thing is that Bachmann have very thoughtfully started putting in pickups on the bogies which makes retro fitting light PCBs way easier now, something cannot be said with the likes of Hornby who still aren't doing that yet!

Which is exactly the problem, it's no longer worth the price you pay for when it's simply not up to the standard of modern spec coaches anymore. Nothing to do with Sam being an "idiot" as such, that's just you not being able to accept criticism and failing to understanding the term "value for money". Bachmann could have very easily updated the tooling to just include some lights in the saloon when they did a new batch back in 2022 as there's plenty of space inside to fit the rectifiers, capacitors, etc but chose not to and that's pretty typical of them.

Nice carriage. There's a new real railway video on my channel I never expected to be able to show off. For the first time in my life, I've seen and captured a Steam Dreams Railtour on the main line. The steam engine hauling the train was LNER A4 Sir Nigel Gresley. She stopped at Chester Station, where I was waiting for a more modern train to take me elsewhere. Watch the video, and you'll see I also captured two stinky diesels on the run: a Class 50 on the Severn Valley Railway, and a Class 86 Electric Diesel at Crewe while waiting for my last connecting train back to Chester. I've achieved this all by myself. My Dad would have loved it.

Totally agree Sam. A very nice looking inspection coach with very nice artwork but at such a price! A pretty basic build for almost £90, what’s going on? Take a look at the Accurascale BR MK1 Non-gangway coaches due soon. Die cast chassis, lights, sprung buffers and a whole host of separately fitted detail for £25 less. Do Bachmann expect not to sell many inspection coaches or are they trying to recoup the cost of production in just a dozen sales? I like your comment of it being a smooth runner because I get the feeling we’re being taken for a ‘bump’ ride. One thing I would take issue with that you mentioned, the coach end “hand rails”, they’re actually filler pipes for the toilet and kitchen water tanks. A small detail, often overlooked. All said and done, a fine looking coach that in my book, fails to deliver on VFM. dB

It's a shame for the limited features, but I guess as people won't be buying multiples like a normal passenger coach, it's a limited run, and the tooling costs and work involved in development eat into the asking price for these models. I'd be happy to be corrected with evidence, but i dont think the LMS inspection saloon had the yellow/black/yellow lining below the windows in period because it wasn't a revenue earning coach so to make it authentic in that regard would be a pain. I think its only correct for modern heritage repro livery. In-period pictures are scarce, the only one I've ever seen (in essery/ jenkinson book) definitely doesn't have that lining. I have a comet one i built, which cost less to buy and gave me lots of lovely model making and research time - thats what i enjoy most. I agree with comments below that point out that this is a specialty coach, with low production runs, and has to be more costly than their "standard" coaches just because of the cost of molds and setup. I also agree that the detailing is less than great, but I can't afford the far superior ones from other manufacturers. We have to remember that most viewing of our railway modeling layouts is from a distance of 100 to 500 feet (scaled, naturally) and just think what you can see on the 1:1 items from that distance. For once, I tend to disagree with your rating.

The old LMS coaches are way too high. All Triang/Hornby models used to be that way. In later production runs they seem to have modified the bogies to lower the coaches so they didn't look so awful compared with other brands. On occasions I would lower Triang/Hornby stock by fitting smaller goods vehicle disc wheels rather than filing down the bogie mounts, or having to drill out the brass rIvets that used to hold Triang bogies on. Not ideal but saved a lot of bother that contemporary modellers don't have to put up with.

For comparison Hornby's LMS coronation coaches which have great detail and working table lamps have an RRP of £60.49 and you can get them for £40-£50 new in the model shops. There's making a fair profit and then there's taking the piss. Bachmann consistently do the latter which is why I've never bought anything new from Bachmann. I'd happily pick one up for a sensible price second hand though, which is how I get anything made by Bachmann.

Me: Waiting Patiently for Heljan BR class 28 diesel. I know that someday, my patience will pay off. And when the Heljan BR class 28 is reviewed, I would like to see the BR class 28 pull a train of Vans to match the round Roof of the BR class 28.

I have problems with model cars for cargo and passenger is there price. I wish for that price we should get at least two in one box.

I'm quite shocked by this review. Bachmann stealthily doing a Hornby 'Design Clever ' job 😕 which is more suited to Railroad Range, not a premium model at a premium price.

I think the only thing the inspectors are going to be inspecting is the OO-scale martinis they order from the kitchen/wet bar. 😂

Lovely looking vehicle. Too expensive by far. Even my Hornby GWR coaches have metal sprung buffers & picked them up new for often less than half the price of this one. Cheers Sam.

Curious as to what you would have called a fair price for what you get. £90 is a joke, obviously, but what should it be?

I guess this would be the equivalent of what North American railways call a business car or office car ?

Given the cost of the longer Revolution Trains "Caroline" inspection coaches from a year or so back, this Bachmann observation coach/inspection saloon is a clear ripoff. No disagreement from me, Sam. Bachmann really need to start upping their coach game.

Were the earlier batches fitted with a suite of lights??? Sure they were.

Just a thought, have you considered not referring in the title the outcome? perhaps let the viewer discover how good the item is as you do?

I think the title is created this way to encourage more people to start watching, because that's how he gets paid.
