The council have wasted millions building ridiculous looking buildings instead of restoring the beautiful original buildings they already have...look at the train station...it needs to be torn down and the old beautiful restored station used again...stop the parking fees and stop building malls which are half empty and the high street shops are not being utilised...more green areas...the biggest problem is the place is a rubbish tip...

The port grew on coal and iron when the docks was developed and Newport became rich. As the steelworks and iron works closed and the coal mines were closed the reason for Newport's growth and industrial existence ceased to exist. I was born there and when I lost my "Job for life" in Llanwern Steelworks I moved away to find work as did most of my friends.

As someone who grew up in both Newport, Bristol and Caerphilly - aside from the house prices (I'm going now on my experience from the 80s and 90s), I feel relatively safe walking through all of the neighborhoods in Newport. Obviously don't walk around the docks like Mr T whilst waving the newest iPhone, but as much as Newport can be scruffy, I tend to find minding my own business there gets me no real trouble. Southmead especially I wouldn't ever visit again (albeit it's not precisely a commercial destination, so little reason to travel there without links to the local community), along with a few other similar areas. I genuinely felt unsafe there in the late 80s

The fact (according to recent Census 2021) is that Newport has it's population risen by 9.5% which stands for 24 000 of new inhabitants in a decade which is Wales total record! - so this is firdt misstatement in that video which appears straight on beggining. Later on we can see at least 3 shots from Cardiff. And according to last ONS stats Newport can not even make competiton with places like Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil or Rhyl with level of depravation/ So, despite i don't really live in Newport (but far away in S.West Wales) and do not really like this City tbh I have admit that your footage unfortunately is a load of nonsense

Lived in Newport for 43 years and have watched as it has slowly but surely deteriorated. I believe that its a combination of mis-managed finances, poor management, poor decision making, rent is too high for retailers and the council has increased council tax to compensate. All the big shops and big names have gone to Spytty! Closed and empty shops, homeless people camping in every empty shop front and 'mish mash' shops at the end selling odds and sods and if you are fortunate enough, you might even be offered 'gear'. Friars Walk is slowly becoming abandoned and the list of shops listed on the wall in two foot high letters have almost all gone! EMPTY SHOPS DON'T PAY RENT!!! LOWER THE RATES TO INCREASE TRADE! Logic! Cwmbran is a much better alternative to Newport for shopping, leisure and parks.

well your first premise is bollocks. when the bridge tolls were abolished newport was the fastest place to sell property due to an influx from the west of england. but there is no doubt about the city continuing to slide. it has been run by a labour council for 50 years apart from a single 5 year tory /libdem coalition. it has 2 labour mp's. if we were a football team we would have sacked the management a long time ago. but this is a democracy, it allows people to vote over & over the same way expecting somthing to change next time..........what can you do???????

Plus they cut down the hours on the street lights you need a lantern to travel on some streets it's like a scene from a horror film in some places, I was thinking to move from Newport to be honest doesn't feel safe anymore rents to high for what it is honestly.

Newport was last on my list. This was about early 2017. I couldn't believe the dirty place it had become. Burger King was full of our colonial friends. That street onward to the police station looked like an area "somewhere else" An elderly gent saw my face.... "Yes there's a big asylum centre here; and a big narcotics problem nowadays". Me? Welsh Government block the building M4 relief Road which would give better infrastructure and inward investment/jobs. They also run Education and NHS Wales- both worse than in England. Locally the Newport City centre has drastically declined. Despite this, the Labour Party is always elected, so I assume the majority are happy with what we have. Obviously having Welsh road signs and Council correspondence softens the blow!
