I've been usung Pop!_OS for almost 2 years now. Honestly, when I read about the update plans it never occurred to me to switch distros. I like it as my daily driver and their developers clearly know what they are doing. I recall the complaints some people have had about the lag between the releases of Ubuntu and the subsequent Pop!_OS releases. "Patience is a virtue" definitely applies here. I was surprised with how immediately pleased I was with Pop OS. It’s my first Linux distro that sets up a recovery partition. It saved my butt over the holidays, when I wrecked my desktop trying to remove pop desktop and install KDE at a house with terrible Internet. I now know, don’t nuke pop desktop if installing a second DE, and don’t switch from the default display manager, unique to Pop OS but I haven’t researched why. I booted up the recovery partition, and since I keep /home separate, I had my environment back up in ten minutes with my profile intact. No flash drives, no waiting for a fresh ISO, and the fastest system recovery I’ve ever had. It isn’t perfect - I did have to set back up a mount point in fstab for my secondary drive and set ZRAM back up, but I’d rather have to do that over the system making a bad assumption that existing files were OK and failing the restore process as a result.

It all kind of depends on how package management is setup. What I mean is take a distro like Arch where AUR was kind of a Flatpack/Snap before these were in wide use. Now that Snap, Flatpack, containers, Linuxbrew exist and are actually really good what the base distro. can or should provide and/or focus on narrows from everything under the sun to basically hardware support (the kernel/kernel drivers) and a unified UI/UX, which isn't trivial, but is narrower than what historically Linux distros handled. I've also almost hit my two decade mark with Linux and I've had the pleasure of compiling custom kernels to eventually after months of custom DSDTs, system freezes, finally getting suspend to work on my laptop, as well as working with unstable Linux distros where the for example sound doesn't work etc.. I don't really want to spend weeks working on getting hardware or software to work every OS upgrade. If that OS upgrade is frequent, eg half a year, that's even more time out of not being able to get work outside of the OS/software upgrading done. I've noticed my Lemur(10) has had all kinds of firmware updates over time, and while System76 isn't perfect, but what is, they are creating a quality product, over time, although I just had to replace my laptop's battery, literally yesterday, but that's my fault for keeping it plugged in 24x7, and that's 2 years after purchase. It's not as though System76 isn't being inventive, eg that Rust OS, COSMIC, System76 is working on looks real nice. tl;dr 1 year is a great cycle time imo for a stable release.

Interesting, but there's just no point trying to compete with KDE 5, especially not with a brand-new desktop environment. It's so vastly superior to all other desktop environments at this point. On a different note, couldn't users desperate for 22.10 updates just manually change their Ubuntu repo references to the latest release? If PopOS is as "based on Ubuntu" as it claims, there should be minimal-to-no compatibility issues. I did that with my KDE Neon install back before they rebased their distro on 22.04.

I also really like where Gnome 4x is going, and that kinda seemed like it was a catalyst for Cosmic. Aurgh! I wish the two orgs could get along better, but the hardest problems in technology always seem to be people problems, not technical ones. I've also been trying out the Fedora 37 beta for a few weeks, and that's been just fine. So whatever happens there will be a bunch of fine options to choose from suppose.

GNOME developers have been known as extremely toxic and, I would say, even authoritarian. They want it to be their way or no way, intentionally killing off more and more possibilities for customization and even trying to force the developers of other open source projects to follow their guidelines even though it's none of their business (as it was the case with Transmission torrenting app). Sure, it's their project and they can do whatever they want with it, but they are being extremely inconstructive when it comes to the feedback of the users and even their fellow developers, doing damage to the whole community.

All I hope for more consistency. I develop apps myself and releasing for Linux feels challenging and it's only getting worse. It was annoying enough 20 years ago when software came needed to support either gnome or KDE. Installation came through either: nstallers with random file extensions to launch the install, RPM packages and Debian packages. Now you've got to deal with countless Desktop environments, a shift away from X11, and more package managers and stores than one could count. As much luck as I wish pop OS, I feel that it would have been better to add the features into an existing Desktop environment than spinning up their own.

I've just migrated from 15 years on macos to PopOS based on it being unix-like, NVIDIA support, and "beginner-friendly" reputation. I think part of being beginner-friendly is not possibly breaking your customers' workflow/computers with insufficiently tested releases, so if they say they don't want to split resources I believe them. As someone who was using a 2015 MBP running MacOS Catalina (released 2019) up until last week, clearly I'm not super invested in the bleeding edge of computing. I've only joined the linux community very recently, but have been taken aback by the tendency of users to become hysterical over trivial things. Thank you for explaining the issue in a reasonable way.

Completely new to the channel, heard the alliteration at 1:34, and my mind immediately jumped to Technology Connections. LOL

The fact that you used the Final Fantasy VI (III) wind sound for your FUD explanation made me click the Subscribe button.

I have no problem with new distros coming out on a yearly basis, they are free, and if Pop is anything like Mint, upgrading to the newer version it's a minor inconvenience just gotta let it download and update packages, heck I went from 19 to 22.10 and it took my old laptop 20 min but once in it was back to normal use.

Considering the insistence of Ubuntu on Snaps, would you like to see the 76 team's next project be to go to a Debian base, or will they try to create something from scratch?

Doesn’t matter much to me. Pop!_OS has done a pretty good job of keeping things snap-free, which I tend to prefer on the desktop. I’m not sure what the gain would be for them rebasing against Debian, but if they decided it was the right move for their team, I’d be on board.

Thanks for the video, Veronica. I haven't been keeping up with this story, so your report is very helpful. I'm pretty happy with Flatpak EXCEPT when I am using an IDE and need to use a language that isn't included in the Flatpak. For instance, the Geany Flatpak can't compile/build/run anything but Python. IntelliJ is OK because "approved" languages can be brought in through the IDE itself. I really hope that Flatpak IDEs get the ability to bring in compilers and interpreters in via Toolbox, Distrobox, or even a local package. GNOME Builder can do this already, but I find it hard to use for what I'm doing, which isn't (yet) building GNOME software.

to be fair I quite liked my journey with POP, but I switched even before this announcement, due to POP holding back Nvidia GPU driver (even if upstream Ubuntu had newer version), the version POP was using contained bug which affected my.usage. but such announcement would certainly did not drive me away, I think it's fair and I am really looking forward to see what becomes of POP/Cosmic.
